I came for this.
The Elgin Marbles are among the most priceless and historic artifacts in the world and the British Museum still won't return them despite the fact they looted them by having Lord Elgin basically buy them off of the Ottoman Empire (who didn't care about them - they were using the Parthenon as weapons storage)LOL
It's their property. This is an absurd and completely unfounded excuse. What is this? The British looter's burden?! They have to protect those Ethiopian savages from themselves?
They weren't "illegally looted", they started a war and they lost. Victor takes the spoils. Besides, you can't apply modern rules of diplomatic relations to the past. The British actions were acceptable by the standards of the time.
The amount of stolen artifacts america returned under the obama administration was unreal
Trump would never do it
Time for britain to step up
If European countries had to give back the shit they stole from other countries, they'd be left literally destitute.
Not happening. It sets a precedent for giving artifacts back, and there's no guarantee they will be able to care for the items properly. I hate to say it, but looting would be a real issue if objects were returned.
Scotland.if you take the british museum away, what do the english have left in 2018?
Eventually they will act logically and give it all back but until then every nation of the world that has something stolen from them must shout and demand it.The British Museum still has the Parthenon Sculptures, aka the Elgin Marbles from Greece, and even highlights the controversy on their own website while still keeping them. I don't expect them to give anything back.
I'd only argue for holding onto artifacts as a means of protection if it felt like the country was about to fall apart at any moment. Meaning I'm not keen on returning Syrian artifacts right now.Not happening. It sets a precedent for giving artifacts back, and there's no guarantee they will be able to care for the items properly. I'm pretty sure they used that argument when they seized the Elgin Marbles too. Because the Ottomans didn't give a shit about them and really did blow up a bunch of 'em.I'd only argue for holding onto artifacts as a means of protection if it felt like the country was about to fall apart at any moment. I'm pretty sure Ethiopia is fine though.
You see. Your problem is that you're judging what they said by modern standards, rather that when it was originally posted......
And in my mind the argument stops working when the country is functional again. Meaning there's no reason to keep holding on to stuff from Greece because I can't see it being destroyed anytime soon.I'm pretty sure they used that argument when they seized the Elgin Marbles too. Because the Ottomans didn't give a shit about them and really did blow up a bunch of 'em.
First thing that came to mind. A fantastic scene.
I didn't mean to say it was a good argument now. That was part of the justification Lord Elgin gave in taking them. And in my mind the argument stops working when the country is functional again. y'all're going to take a lot from pretty much every single country in the world in a few years unless your politicians wise up
The whole concept of "ownership" when it comes to this sort of stuff is weird in the first place. Most of these things once belonged to actual people, not countries.

Brexitif you take the british museum away, what do the english have left in 2018?
the only thing I remember from the V&A was when I visited as a young child and they had a photography exhibition on and one of the photos was a really badly composed vision of a very pale, very white couple standing next to each other...a topless skinny man and a bottomless woman
I remember the woman had a supremely hairy minge
I wish they'd have given that back to wherever they got it before my impressionable eyes had become set on it, it's the only memory I have of that fucking museum
Say what?If European countries had to give back the shit they stole from other countries, they'd be left literally destitute.

I came in here to post this.
The fuck do those groups have to do with Ethiopia? When I think of all the irreplaceable historical treasures that have been destroyed by the Taliban, the Islamic State and other religious nutjobs in recent years, I get sick. These artefacts belonged to all of mankind.
I am glad the British Museum exists, and I am fine with it keeping everything it has. At least there the artefacts are safe and can be enjoyed by future generations.

I instantly thought of the same thing.
Nothing, I just used it as an example how many irreplaceable cultural artefacts were recently destoyed, which would still exist if they had been in the British Museum.
Then it has fuck all to do with anything. White people don't get to take everyone else's shit because there are brown people somewhere else doing something.
Exactly, they won't even literally cross the street to check these anyway. They should give them back. Many artifacts are of significant cultural value and don't belong to British museums.
Everyone only goes to the National History Museum for the animatronic dinosaurs anyway.
At least in the British Museum, these artefacts are safely kept and can be enjoyed by everyone.
What does that have to do with anything? Then it has fuck all to do with anything. White people don't get to take everyone else's shit because there are brown people somewhere else doing something.
Don't waste your time, he's a hardcore Brexiteer.y'all're going to take a lot from pretty much every single country in the world in a few years unless your politicians wise up
Africa isn't a fucking country. If you have in depth knowledge of how every museum in Ethiopia is getting frequently robbed and looted, please feel free to shareNothing, I just used it as an example how many irreplaceable cultural artefacts were recently destoyed, which would still exist if they had been in the British Museum.
There are constant civil wars, unrest etc. in many parts of Africa. Artefacts get stolen and sold to private collectors by unscrupulous dealers. At least in the British Museum, these artefacts are safely kept and can be enjoyed by everyone.
Everyone in London, maybe. Meanwhile, Ethiopians that want to learn about their own country have to travel to another continent to see these.
