Yo, just got a series X, and I have some questions for Xbox fans.

Is Halo 5 worth playing if I skipped 4? Is it worth playing in general? Is Gears 5 worth playing if I skipped 4 (and 3 and 2 and Judgement)? Are either of these titles worth my time (which is limited to about 3-4 hours of gaming per day)? I'm looking through Game Pass and trying to find stuff to occupy April since I'm not planning on buying new games this month. I played all of Ori and loved most of it. (The last bit kind of sucked ass, but the rest was pleasurable).
Yes definitely play Gears 5 and Hivebusters. A visual treat and a lot of fun.

As for Halo, why not play Halo 4? The port in TMCC is fully enhanced for XSX.

Gears 5 follows the events of Gears 4. If you care at all about the story, then you need to play 4. In fact, you should probably just play them all if you really want to know what's going on. Judgement is the only one that is unnecessary.

I think my thinking was that I'm not willing to stomach 360-era games with my brand new Xbox, but if you say it's worth it, then I'll have to give it a shot.

I kind of just want to be up to speed with everything Xbox, but I've heard some mixed stuff about Halo 5.

The best thing about internal development is that Xbox won't need to rely on 3rd party publishers for Gamepass content.

Starting with 2021-2022, 3-4 AAA games in a year from Xbox Game Studios + ZeniMax will be huge. Hopefully some upcoming games will win GOTY this generation.

The best is we get both 3rd parties and first party day one!

Is Halo 5 really that bad? I want to make sure I'm ready for Infinite, but I don't want to suffer a shitty story.
It's not necessarily shitty, it's just really....strange. The boss fights are...questionable. Shocking that they made it into the game without anyone raising a hand. The story itself is very bland and forgettable which sucks because it had an amazing set-up before the game came out. The story was sold pre-launch as a cool mystery and hunt. There was a lot really cool themes they were exploring in the marketing that got people excited. None of them are in the game. None. Game is nothing like that. At all. Still a fun game with cool moments, worth playing through on an easier difficulty in my opinion.

Thanks for this. It helps me contextualize the game in a way that would probably allow me to enjoy it a bit more.

Halo 4 holds up incredibly well. 4k/120fps, HDR, super smooth gameplay. It's on Game Pass so won't cost you anything you check it out.

It's not. People were rightly disappointed in the story. The gameplay, gunplay, level and combat design is excellent in 5.

Halo 4 is also worth playing, but despite having a better story has much less interesting levels and engagements.

Play Halo 2 Anniversary if you haven't.

I don't think it's happening, but I have no basis.

I've been playing it on ps5 but man is it stuffed with padding. I've pretty much dropped the game at this point because of that. I don't very much enjoy games that are stuffed with unnecessary crap, especially when you have no choice but to do them.

I already played through it on PS4 but I enjoyed it! To each his own!

I just might want to play it again with the upgrades before I get a PS5 again, but I guess we'll see what happens.

Naw. Halo 5 is a pretty solid campaign. Not among my personal favorites, but still solid nonetheless.

It just didn't live up to the hype (or 343's own marketing promises) at the time.

Thanks!

I'll probably try to push through anyway, just because I have no faith in being able to find a XSX here anytime soon, and my province is entering another month long lockdown on Saturday.

I honestly couldn't have told you if the framerate was good or bad, because it was the framepacing that was the issue - it was all over the place, making the game feel very choppy. It's certainly possible they've tightened things up for the full release though, and there's no need to worry about starting now - your save will come with you when you get a Series X. Just jump in and see how playable it feels to you :)

I'll second this. Halo 5 has some fantastic encounters, and it has my favourite gameplay in the series. The story is certainly disappointing, and a lot of the character comes from combat banter, which can be very easy to miss in the heat of battle.

id say go for it, all the mainline gears (i havent played judgement) and halo games are top tier plus they're pretty short so it wouldnt take you that long.

I would play Halo 4 and Gears 4 before playing the sequels. Both are pretty important to the stories in the sequels.

Imo Gears 2 and 3 are also worth playing, but of course that would require quite a bit of time.

I'll be damned. Thought my XSX was arriving Monday (that was the estimated time during check-out), but I just checked and it's out for delivery right now! Of course, I have family coming into town for the evening tonight. Hopefully it arrives soon enough for me to get it set up and downloading a few games while we're at dinner.

I'm thinking Hitman 3, Doom Eternal, Tell Me Why, Call of the Sea, and.... something else to start me off. Maybe a replay of Prey and Dishonored DE. I can't believe I'm saying this, but maybe even Hivebusters.

All those games are worth your time. For all the bitching people do about some of the weaker entries in Halo or Gears franchises, they are still better than 90% of games out there.

is there a way to upgrade all SX enhanced games? Or do I have to launch them one by one to trigger the upgrade?

This.
Also, I played Gears 5 and enjoyed it very much even without playing Gears 4 before. Don't feel like I missed out on something.
Halo 5 was very cool too, and I wasn't there for any pre-release drama or anything so I just enjoyed it as it was: A very fun game.

LOL, You can tell other consoles fucked up people's minds.

This is what smart delivery is about, if you downloaded an enhanced game then it's the right version. No extra steps needed.

Wait a minute Kotaku failed miserably in their craft and published a story without researching, then tried to pretend they made an April Fool's joke when the substance of their story evaporated in a cloud of lies???

wow

WOW

Some self respecting journalism right there
They said they "got got" essentially saying someone fooled them.

How much these games are worth playing, really comes down to if you have any investment in the worlds and the stories. Halo 4 and 5 contain major events that lead directly into the state of the world in Halo Infinite. Gears 4 does likewise for the Gears universe, including the introduction of the "new" principal antagonists for the series.

If all you care about is gameplay, Halo 5 is skippable unless you're just desperate for Halo gameplay in any form. Prometheans and the Warden Eternal never really become fun to fight. Gears 4 is more Gears, and you like that or you don't.

Gears 5 is absolutely worth playing, but I'd recommend watching recap videos or something to get caught up.

I'm kind of upset xCloud isn't on iOS

Yeah, Apple blocking the app-based solution really messed up MS's timeline. Pretty sure the original plan was to launch both iOS and Android simultaneously. However, I'm hoping the browser-based solution that is supposed to launch this year on PC and iOS will also work with the updated Edge browser on the Xbox for when I just want to quickly try something on the TV before deciding to download 50-100 GB.

It's encouraging to hear that they're working on a web-based solution. To people that have tried xCloud, how does it compare to Sony's Remote Play or PS Now? When I remote play in the same apartment with the PS5 it's a pretty subpar experience.

Halo 5 really suffers from needing to know lore that is presented outside of the game to fully understand.

Idk, I did a campaign playthrough at launch and still haven't been able to make myself finish a second run all these years later. There are definitely issues. It is the weakest Halo campaign by a country mile. But, it's still worth a run if you're trying to run through all the games as a lead-up to Infinite

Microsoft want it on there just as badly as we do.

I am not so sure about that. Definitely agree on Apple's part, but Xbox has never seemed to have any interest in the apple ecosystem. No official apps, nothing.

Story is garbage. Campaign encounter and boss design is garbage.

Art Style is beautiful, but not as "Halo" as one might wish and definitely too busy.

Gameplay is great, although again, some people are still not fond of sprint and abilities.

Gunplay is god-tier.

Huh? There's an Xbox and Game Pass app on iOS. They of course want the apple ecosystem because apple is huge in the US and with kids. xCloud on iOS is coming soon enough.

Microsoft/Xbox absolutely want in on Apple's ecosystem. There are Xbox and Game Pass apps on the app store, Xbox mobile games have released on iOS. XCloud was in testing on iOS before Apple shut it down.

On the Microsoft front, Apple literally had them on stage at a press conference to show Office running on iPads.

It's encouraging to hear that they're working on a web-based solution. To people that have tried xCloud, how does it compare to Sony's Remote Play or PS Now? When I remote play in the same apartment with the PS5 it's a pretty subpar experience.

It's been a bit since I was able to test it, but it was pretty ace for me as long as I was on a 5Ghz Wifi network. 2.4 was a mess no matter how close to the router I got.

Some small input lag, but it was something I could adjust to. I would actually play Halo 5 Warzone PVE on my phone at work.
