Speaking as a 40 year old, there is nothing that makes me feel older than people my age or younger needlessly shitting on younger generations. Despite having been needlessly shit on by older generations when they were kids.

Minecraft isn't for me. A game with 80 fucking characters can stand to have a character from a game I don't like. It can stand to have characters from franchises old and new that appeal to all different age ranges.

But yeah. Maybe don't hate something because you can't connect to it and don't understand what younger people see in it.

I'm 32 and feel the same way.

Lots of people showing their asses today. Wild.

Get some fucking air. lol

Era hasn't been the norm in years. The last time I'd say it was in sync was back in the late 00s, when the most popular games of the year were also the most discussed games of the year with Halo, COD, GTA, WoW, etc. When Wii, Mobile, and PC were bringing in an entire new sort of gamer in. Its why we had a bunch of people cry about Minecraft being Watchmojo's #1 GOTG.

Every time one of these come up with another childish outburst, we get closer basement dweller status with a bunch of 20 and 30 year olds.

Just to follow up a few points:

The quotes were needed to evidence that the discourse was beyond people just being disappointed in a character reveal. They were hostile, insulting to other gamers, dismissive of any of the new game mechanics (which should have been the most exciting points of discussion), and condecending. They needed to be exhibited to evidence the arguments that followed.

I have however removed some that I might have over-zealously misinterpreted, with apologies.

Oh, also, I hope this is a lesson to everyone as to why buying a season pass full of mystery content is never a good idea.

I woke up this morning, saw the Smash Bros Steve announcement thread was like 1400 posts and rising, and without even clicking on it I knew was a huge number of people's reactions were.

I'd say any new character from a new franchise is a win for Smash DLC, regardless if it's one I care about it or not.

The entire first Fighters Pass I only ended up liking playing as one of them (Dragon Quest Hero), and only one was from a franchise I was hoping for (Banjo Kazooie).
But it's a game with a million characters and I'm obviously not going to like all of them (or even most of them).

There is yet another tangent to this - the sort of remarks dunking on others by saying something to the effect of 'the problem is with Nintendo fans liking something too much' and in the next thread it's 'the problem is with Nintendo fans hating something too much'.

Saw it a lot with Mario 3D All-Stars.

Me as a Mario guy was both simultaneously entitled for wanting 'more' and also a meek corporate puppet for buying the game as is.

Schrodinger's Nintendo fan.

(I haven't got the game but I will)

As for Smash, there are probably some valid reasons as to why people feel this way about the DLC. They get drowned out or mis-construed and that's no good for anybody.

Can we actually play Smash with people here? I'm dying to get back into it.

I'm actually surprised its hard to understand why people dislike Steve and this topic is a bit disingenuous, because I don't believe anyone to be that clueless. The best you can argue about his design is that Steve is recognizable.

My first comment should be pretty obvious that I reference Steve looks terrible from a presentation perspective (not gameplay), especially compared to every other character in the game. There is nothing you can do with him to give him personality and even Game and Watch greatly surpasses him on that front just in his idle animation.

I mentioned Pokemon because it largely transcends gaming now so you can be exposed to it without being a streaming or youtube viewer, or playing video games. Most people young and old feel Pokemon have character and personalities that are endearing, they did a very good job with Inceneroar as an example and I didn't particularly care for his addition.

I like good stuff from the generations below and above me.
I dislike bad stuff from the generations below and above me.

Minecraft is good.
Steve from Minecraft is a laughable boring character when there are so many others to pick from.

This topic is not a dichotomy.
But his moveset looked more interesting and unique than a lot of the other options we have gotten recently, and doesn't look to be the absolute RNG garbage fire that Hero was. If the character plays in an interesting fashion that invokes the feeling of their franchise, it shouldn't matter that the character is just a dude with a pickaxe.

Besides, this is far from the first generic avatar character we've gotten. Imo he looks like a ton of fun, and I'm happy we have him over say, a golden sun or super Mario rpg character people will hardly remember.

Yep, this is embarrassing. It's even more embarrassing that these are apparently adults making these posts, upset that something the appeals to kids was added to a Nintendo game that millions of kids play.

If you grew up in the 90s....so many of your characters are in the game. Chill out.

I'm in my thirties and I like Minecraft, granted I played the beta and something like 30 hours maximum, I didn't play this game in like 5 years or more but I'm fine with it being represented in Smash.

But it's been a weird day for sure, I didn't know it was so divisive, maybe it's just the rule that the more popular a thing get, the more diverse opinions there are.

I didn't realise this would be the controversial straw that broke the camels back. At least Minecraft guy is playable on Nintendo consoles as opposed to Cloud and Joker, neither of whom are associated with Nintendo by anyone at all.

Thanks for quoting me and taking my response too seriously for this equally embarrassing "shame thread".

Like whats wrong with thinking its a boring and soulless character?

I find it funny that just having a different opinion and not liking it turned into now "look at this boomer" lmao

Honestly, not all of those quotes are even remotely alike, and people expressing some disappointment with a character being included in a season pass doesn't take it away from the people who are psyched about Steve's inclusion.

In my opinion this kind of "name and shame" wall-of-quotes list works directly in opposition to any kind of good discussion around pretty much any subject. Especially given that some of them are very mild. Honestly, it makes you come off as the bitter person here.

I think Steve is a cool addition to Smash, but lots of people had their hearts set on characters like Master Chief or Doomguy. It's understandable.

I'm not excited for him, but I get why Minecraft is in the game. At least they look interesting moveset wise. More than we can say about some of the other characters.

And fuck the term "waste of a slot". It was dumb phrase before Ultimate and it's especially dumb afterwards.

The creators of Smash Bros performing alchemy to get an interesting moveset out of a nothing character is credit due to the creators and not to the blank slate that is Steve.

I first played Minecraft around 2011 - 2012, I was in college, and nobody thought it was the "baby game" back then that people think it is now. I don't know what changed and when it changed, and I don't know what's stopping adults (that aren't content creators) from enjoying it today outside of fearing their reputation will be destroyed.

Whatever, man. Folks are going to be cruel. I was mocked for liking Pokemon Sapphire in elementary school. I just don't care about hostile opinions about video games anymore.

I mean, you can't say after a 2 minute trailer that Steve has 0 personality in the game lmao.

This isn't about whether you like Steve or not.

Its about some of the trends we saw in that thread. Complete dismissiveness of an IP played by millions upon millions of gamers. A wall of hostility towards the announcement, which provides an interesting contrast with the wider gaming world which reacted in a complete opposite manner. The condescension of the character as for "children" and labelling all Minecraft fans as "Children". The faux-critiques that Minecraft couldn't possibly be included in a game that specialises in including dozens upon dozens of genres. The fan-fiction about Sakurai. The Boomer, Zoomer and other terminology being used across the thread. Absolutely no discussion from certain parties about all the new mechanics that come with this DLC update, which you would think would be absolute Bread and Butter to a gaming discussion community. The repeated mention of "bubbles" throughout the thread.

There was so much more to think about, as evidenced by the quotes, than linking Steve or not.

Nice job cutting out more than half of my post, OP:
A predictable, if utterly lame, choice.

At this point, every character i'd want in a Smash Bros. game that has a realistic chance of being included (aside from Ryu Hayabusa, to round out the most prominent NES legacy characters) is already in so i'm more curious as to seeing who else makes it in besides "representation of that one game made by that bigoted billionaire".
I am overall indifferent to this choice, as i'll likely be with all the other reveals that will be a part of the 2nd Fighter Pass since every character i'd want to be is already a representative, but whatever suits your narrative, I suppose.
can we not lump everyone that didnt like steve and had gut reaction post with the people that were throwing tantrums for hours later K thankz
Pretty much this, yeah.

It's fucking crazy lol, I've been playing Minecraft off and on since 2009, and here are people saying "who's that?" And "game is shit the character is not relevant to me". Meanwhile 200m or something people are playing this shit around the world.

Thanks for the feature, OP. I'm allowed to not like something. I didn't care for Minecraft when I was a kid and I still don't. I would have preferred getting a new character I actually like. Is that now allowed?

To be honest I really try to avoid Era when things are first announced due to my perception that there's a heavy slant of negative reactions. I hate seeing an announcement and feeling excited about it, thinking "oh let's see how excited my fellow gamers are!" and then 5 posts in being like "... oh"

Steve is a great move. He gives a different spectrum of customers a point of familiarity than almost anybody else in the roster. Gaming is so much bigger than Era, or the core fans.

This seems like a pretty cut-and-dried thing for me.

You're ok to not like this. Not liking this doesn't make you a loser boomer or someone stuck in a bubble.
It's not ok to bully other people for liking something either, though.

It's hilarious that this forum is the self proclaimed 'pulse of the gaming industry' and yet is so fixated on such a niche, shrinking part of, namely AAA action/narrative games.

You see it again and again with stuff like Among Us, which is seemingly talked about everywhere but here.

The sad part of all of this is that Steve represents programmer art from an alt right billionaire. Funny the way the world ends up working.

Edit: Oh yeah, can't forget the trans denial. What HASN'T Notch done?
Also I feel deeply uncomfortable with the fact that a game created by a known and vocal misogynist, racist, and transphobe is being celebrated and represented here, no matter how much you want to excuse it with his current lack of involvement or the community-driven popularity of the thing.

I absolutely despise Notch, but these kind of takes are stupid. Lots of things we rely on were made by racist, homophobic, and generally all round shitty people. If you took that attitude to everything you'd literally be with no house and no clothes. Live in North or South America? Well bad news for you - look up what old Christopher Columbus did. Drive a Ford? Tough luck - every car bears the name of a guy that Hitler fanboyed so hard that he gave him a medal - a man who is still exalted in the company's literature like nothing happened. Western society is full of bigotry and hate. You can't avoid it.

To clarify, when people like J.K. Rowling still profit from participation in their works, I'm more than happy to not endorse their creations and refrain from chucking them my dough. In fact, I'd feel bad not to leave them out in the cold. But in cases like these, Notch or whoever else doesn't benefit from it in any way. It's not like he's rubbing his hands with his obnoxious neckbeardic glee every time someone buys a copy. Although his fingerprint on the game is undeniable - it doesn't advocate his reprehensible views, and it could have easily been made by someone else. IIRC, he's not even a fan of the more recent updates - make of that what you will.

Saying Steve looks boring after that trailer is ridiculous. His moveset is creative as fuck and represents the game extremely well.

Oooof that ancient gamer... What am I? What comes before ancient? And I'm only 22.
Wait, you're still alive? I thought all of the dinosaurs went extinct like, decades ago.
