The amount of people both credit and blame Jim Ryan for things seems like a direct response to Phil Spencer becoming much more forward facing at xbox (by design, it was simply a different route that Playstation takes) and to maybe a lesser extent what Nintendo had done with Reggie/Iwata years prior. The reality is that Jim Ryan (or Phil Spencer) are heads of teams of hundreds who are all contributing to the success of Playstation as a brand, and making decision like the Dual Sense Edge, like setting console/game/accessory prices, like green lighting specific games and not others. The takeaway here is that what you think about Jim Ryan as a person, or whether he actually "cares" about games (which is a thing you wouldn't know anyway) is about as irrelevant as it gets and sort of a pointless thing to even consider from a consumer/enthusiast standpoint.

In context I believe he does value what games bring to an audience. I remember there was some interview where he talks about enjoying playing video games with his kids, but it's perfectly okay that he isn't a gamer and doesn't pretend to be. When he made a quip about previous gen games looking ancient, it was a dumb comment but it's not like that really meant anything because BC is something that as a business leader he didn't choose to ignore, because it's valuable content, and PS+ has started offering classic games (though it could be much better).
That comment was more of a wry joke about how old games visually look like shit and way less appealing compared to modern games which isn't that controversial of an assessment to make.

I know Sony is weird with the divisions, but it's still Sony lol

Speaking of Lasengle, they've been putting out some cool videos of a 3D tech demo from 2022 over the past few weeks:

Makes me wonder what they're cooking up next.

Honestly Jim Ryan is so lucky, everything he touches becomes a success. Nobody exepected Dualsense Edge to be so successful, yet it did. Nobody expected Ps5 to sell even better than Ps4 and yet it's happening. Nobody expected a Twisted Metal series was going to be good, but it's actually good. Without even speaking about the enormous The Last of Us series success.

It's definitely just luck. I'm sorry for everyone that doesn't like Ryan but he is going to stay as Playstation CEO for a long time.
I think it's the perfect time for Jimbo to go to Japan and want to shell out a few billion dollars 🤑🤑

Let's be real: the number of GaaS games that flash and burn out vastly eclipses the number of GaaS games that last and make tons of money.

Sony is no different. Most of their GaaS games will fail, or flounder in relative obscurity. Maybe one of them will catch on.
I think that's all they're looking to do, honestly.

Throw a lot of ideas out and see what sticks.

The never-ending spin by some that Final Fantasy XVI flopped because they're mad about the exclusive deal never ceases to amaze me. When Square Enix said Forspoken's sales were lackluster they were on board, but then refuse to believe when Square says the the opposite of FFXVI!

With that track record it's a diservice to say it's just luck and I would add that it isn't just Jim Ryan's work but the result of many teams under him

Right now I do not see a world were he is fired, I think he will left his possition only if he is promoted or if his retiring.

High level corporate strategy can be attributed to Jim, but yes, if you are praising or blaming the CEO for every little thing you like or dislike about the brand you are probably not directing your comments at the person who was actually responsible for those decisions.

Like GAAS push, PS Productions, 1st party PC ports, acquisitions, etc. are initiatives that I'd assume Jim had a role in spinning up, but if there's a particular game, movie, accessory, marketing event, etc. that you liked or disliked there's little chance he had a direct hand in it.

Just got out of the Gran Turismo movie. It's incredible. I do not care about cars, racing or racing games but I and the 2 friends (who don't care either) I was with absolutely loved it.

After the movie you have to throw your ticket into one of three buckets, one for liked it, one for whatever and one for disliked it. Before the movie started, the owner of the theatre already said "I think we only need the green/liked it bucket" and boy was he right. The tickets were almost spilling over by the time I left. Good shit. Very, very good shit.

Now let me watch Twisted Metal, PlayStation Productions:(

Just thought of a new ~conspiracy~ theory regarding the Shin Megami Tensei V Complete Edition rumor from notable Chinese leaker Xun that didn't pan out like many thought it would.

The dimensions of the image shared by Xun were 701x426, which we all thought was teasing the date July 1. But maybe it was actually like this:

7 + 01 = 8
26 - 4 = 22

August 22. Gamescom Opening Night Live.

The title of Xun's post translates to "Keep It Simple This Time," which I guess I boiled down to the content of the tease itself being easy to determine. But maybe that was meant to encourage people to use simple math.

Anyway, don't mind me I was just checking to see if he posted anything new recently so I had another look at the thread.
Have you heard anything about the existence of the game from your own sources or was the first time you heard about it via that forum?

It's honestly wild how much PlayStation basically pigeonholed themselves into the general public's mind as the default gaming platform. I still think back about the SNL skit (one of the few funny ones) where they talked about how much they wanted the PS5 when it just came out. How it became a name nearly synonymous with gaming. I mean it makes sense since they didn't do a repeat of the PS3 and just played it safe by coasting off the waves of the PS4's success. That's all they really need to do to keep staying where they are. Just keep riding the waves and keep expanding wherever necessary.

It would have been really interesting to see how the system would have sold if supply wasn't an issue. Demand is still very strong but the thirst for PS5 around launch time was crazy.

One thing Sony has going for them is the name of the actual system. PlayStation is just a great name for a product and really hard to beat.

Its funny because the name got dunked on back in the PS1 days. People thought it sounded too much like PlaySkool or something? But yeah I'd agree that it is a great name and the classic PS logo is a thing of beauty.

I see so many people wear shirts with the OG PlayStation logo, practically every week I see someone wear it. I'm trying to think of other brand logos that have that kind of shirt rep. Obviously the Nike swoosh is very prevalent but PlayStation is surprisingly up there. It's just a damn good logo

I assume Jim is involved with assigning Asad Qizilbash to PS Production and looks like he's been doing a great job at it.

I have a sweatshirt with the logo and its the only garment I wear that random people will comment on; it happens more often than I would have expected. Like I was walking down the sidewalk with it on a couple of months ago and a random lady driving past rolled down her window and yelled "nice shirt!" lol.

PS really does have alot of brand power.

Asad got this postion before Jim took over as CEO

PlayStation sets up new film and TV division

Sony Interactive’s new PlayStation Productions unit will produce movies and television series based on PlayStation video games. It will be led by Azad Qizilbash and Shawn Layden.

Edit: Now that I think about it Jim did become CEO like a month or two before this so maybe yea he did have hand in it

The old Playstation logo always reminds me the old Apple Logo.

Makes sense why both of these brands are so well known and entrenched in their respective industry. It all starts with a beautiful logo and a catchy name.

The DualSense Edge topping the Circana charts is making me more and more confident in the Q Lite being a monstrous success. I think they'll aim to price it roughly in line with the Edge (at most $50 more). I'm putting in a pre-order as soon as I can.

I think it's gonna be quite the battle between the Q Lite and the Edge each month to see which tops the Circana charts.

Tren is such a relaxing and beautiful game to play. Very happy to see it releases in Dreams.

Tren is awesome and it proves Media Molecule still has it. I really hope their next project is a more traditional game, because I want more games like Tren and LBP. Dreams was great for what it is and the community built some amazing things, but I feel it required a lot of maintenance from MM's side and so they had less time to build their own original content. I was also hoping other PS Studios would jump in and build things like Tren but that never came to be.

I've said this elsewhere, but I think they should make a sandbox survival adventure game. Make a AAA Minecraft like experience with a focus on exploration and adventure that is playable in coop.

This would still be a creative venture for them while still allowing players to create which is a backbone of their games. They know how to make the creation tools accessible so they just need to put those into a game that's playable without needing to spend hours learning how to create.

The great thing about sandbox games is that it doesn't need high budget cinematics and the narrative is player driven. They can make a rough outline for players to strive towards kind of like Valheim but let players decide how to play through it.

I think an innovative system for sandbox games is to have a hub world where players from all kinds of servers they've set up can interact with each other. Imagine if the creative tools were deep enough that players can create objects with specific logic unique to them and be able to show them off in the hub world for other players to use in their own worlds.

Ah, now that you mention it feels like the perfect setup for them to have contributed small projects which would otherwise have no chance of getting greenlit under PS Studios banner.
I sometimes wonder, with all those talent at the studios and only able to release a game every 4-5 years, how much potential stuff is getting lost.

Anyways, as you say, MM still got it. Which is great news as they, alongside ND, SMS, Housemarque and Team Asobi are the studios I am excited about.
