Ok. So the PS5 outperforms the PS4. It took 34 months for the PS4 to reach 4 million (helped at the very end by the PS4 Pro) against 32 months in favor of the PS5 with major shortage problems and a higher price for the machine.

Only took four years, but WHAT THE GOLF? is coming out on PlayStation soon: https://store.playstation.com/en-us/concept/10002260

(maybe also Xbox but IDK as no game page yet)

Currently out on Switch, PC, and Apple Arcade.

One thing Sony has going for them is the name of the actual system. PlayStation is just a great name for a product and really hard to beat.
Whenever I see ppl saying its boring because its the name and a number I just do a sensible chuckle.

One thing Sony should never have to worry about is the name of their home console.

Yep it's on pace to have the best year for PS in Japan since PS2 era.

Well thats amazing. The PS5 might also be ahead of the PS4 in the US. Whatever the case, its will probably pass the PS4 worldwide before the year ends.

I finally broke down and ordered my second PS5 last night. Got a Digital Edition for upstairs and a ton of PSN credit from Best Buy while it's 15% off. I'm ready to be bombarded with games come October!

Spidey 2, Alan Wake 2, Sonic Superstars and Mario Wonder come out within a few days of each other and I'm gonna buy them all as if I have that level of free time.

Sometimes, I take the week after Thanksgiving off to play with all of my Black Friday pick ups. I might shift that to October this year.

I am a complete DND moron. Would the kick have been less violent if it was a lower roll?

Depends on exact implementation.

Usually you will pass or fail a check, as the two results. The skill check has a "difficulty" expressed as a number like 15 for example and you need to beat that number to pass.

In tabletop your dm will often add some flavour or extra bonuses if you succeed with a natural 20 on the dice, or a particularly egregious failure if you roll 1.

I am uncertain if the kick in bg3 takes success thresholds into account or if it's just a binary pass/fail.

I'm starting to understand this game a little more now. You can't count the number of possiblities. Everyone will have a different experience.

It always sounds a bit more complicated than it actually is, especially as player modifiers are a thing too. But yeah the 2 big things is rolling a 1 on the dice is real bad, it's considered a critical failure and can have very bad consequences depending on the situation and rolling a 20 on the dice is real good and considered a critical success and unlike a 1 it has big benefits if you roll that during combat too (you double the damage).

Outside of them 2 you just need to beat a certain number with the dice + your modifier. It's also how combat works where you need to meet or beat the enemies armor class (AC) to hit them.

It would be super cool (any maybe hilarious) if BG3 has 'critical success' or 'critical failure' events for some of its rolls.

For sure, I think that's were a lot of the best moments happen with D&D where you just roll like shit and next thing you know you are the most wanted outlaw in the world due to a series of unfortunate events that followed. Or you get that 20 on a super important roll and celebrate like mad.

I've never really understood this mentality. One of the first times I remember it being brought up was with ICO, because it's only around 6 hours long. But it's also one of the best games ever made. It feels like this type of complain can only really lead to developers bolting unnecessary content onto the game in order to artificially add length to it, which is ultimately going to make the game worse.

Dont have allot of experience with these kind of RPGs but what is min/max?
I'm probably explaining it poorly but basically, taking every mechanic/decision/stat and trying to maximize every possible gain/outcome for yourself. Minimizing every potential loss or poor outcome you could have as well.

The worst part is that they're probably getting insane engagement on that take so it's actually working extremely well for the bottom line I'm sure!

Baldur's Gate 3 looks daunting and extremely complex, especially for a console game, but that's exactly what I expect for a D&D game. The incredible levels of depth seem truly unparalleled and the amount of hilarious moments you can intentionally induce seem like the D&D interactive experience I was looking for. Very exciting times for September 6th

It's kind of a shame that the PS4 is just going to die. I really feel like a PS4 Super Slim with a 7nm chip, some cheap flash storage and an SD card slot could sell well at a low price in less well-off countries, especially with PS+ Extra or Premium.

If not for the pandemic I do wonder if that might have been an option Sony was considering. Even if it was, we're well past that point now. Although maybe they didn't want the PS4 to continue to step on the PS5s toes too much

I think the bottom's fallen out of that market and most of those regions you are describing are all in on PC/mobile as their gaming platforms of preference whereas 20 years ago they would have been all over cheaper PS1s or PS2s.

I don't think Housemarque is going back to smaller games after those almost sank them (and I say that as a big fan of their output). Returnal is exactly what they needed and I can't wait to see them build on that.

78 days until Spider-Man 2

PS5 has only been out for 2 and a halfish years, but Returnal has been my GOTG so far, so while I'd never say no to something like Resogun, I 'd hope Housemarque continue to aim higher for future releases.

I don't know if Housemarque plans to be a huge studio like ND or Insmoniac, but I would like to see them expand.

I remember that "Arcade is dead" blogpost they put out after Nex Machina flopped, and yeah, they will never go back to smaller games
