whenever meta agrees to very basic privacy rights

so probably never
They already operate in Europe with Instagram, Facebook and Whatsapp. The issue is not the privacy rights, it's the fact that they use Instagram as the account for Threads. This breaks one of the data-sharing rules of the DMA which is basically about giving one of your products preferential treatment by using data from another one of your apps. Once they have federation working people will be able to use something like a Mastodon account to access Threads which should alleviate this problem. Or maybe they have another solution they're working on first, who knows?

I hope in the future they let you have a threads only account, and delete your IG and keep the threads account

made a second IG for threads when it launched because I didn't want to use my personal account on threads and my friends see me meme and talk about nerdy stuff

Threads is too instagramy. They should of never overlapped the two. Threads needed to be it's own separate entity.

Doesn't feel like Instagram at all to me? UI is completely different, it just logs in via Insta. I noticed alot of people who migrated from Insta instead of Twitter started off posting basically the same as they would on Insta - is that what you mean?

Yeah, it's really nothing like Instagram, despite being a great place for photos and art. My feed is a nice mix of both media posts and just plain text posts.

Are people finally making the jump away from Twitter? What is the current reason that people here are citing for not adopting Threads and staying on Twitter?

Meta still doesn't allow NSFW art on Threads, right? One of the few things which still keeps me on Twitter. :/

Because Threads is, and probably won't be a Twitter replacement. They're doing their own thing and they apparently found their public, which is really cool to be honest.

I wonder which app will replace Twitter when Musk will force everybody to pay. Bluesky might be the obvious answer, but it's far from being ready atm.

After using Bluesky for months, I honestly don't know if they'll ever get there. Still no video/gif support is kind of crazy. I think Threads will be farrrr more feature-complete and more of a Twitter replacement before Bluesky can even handle any sort of large-scale volume.

Will Bluesky scale to even handle 20 millions active users by the end of 2024? Can they?

If Threads isn't your replacement nothing will be.

Twitter allowing NSFW art always seemed like a huge oversight. What I mean is that I still don't understand why Tumblr was forced to get rid of NSFW content but Apple and other companies didn't give Twitter any crap.

And now that Twitter hardly does anything about CSAM, which I believe was a major issue with Tumblr, companies like Apple still don't apply pressure like they did with Tumblr.

It pisses me off, to be honest. But I also think this is another downside of Musk ruining Twitter. I don't think new social media platforms can get away with allowing NSFW content. Twitter got away with it for some reason, but I don't imagine that will happen with anything new.

Bluesky does allow nsfw content.
They do, but if they ever open up they'll likely get more scrutiny. I'm just pessimistic about any large platform being able to host NSFW content these days. They'll be pressured by outside parties like Apple, Google, or even credit card processors. Even if they have measures in place to remove CSAM.

I fucking hate how the fun, niche smut online keeps getting axed for dumb reasons while hate speech proliferates because the latter is ~free speech~

I don't know what happened but Threads has become such a nice place for photography. Lots of activity on my feed. I hope a lot of the illustrators I followed on Twitter follow suit. I did have to mute some words because the AI "prompt engineers" have started to arrive on the platform, though.

Yeah, photography was one of the first things to take off on the app. It's legit a great app for photography; the compression is less aggressive than IG, the carousel remains awesome, and you're not restricted to specific ratios, even in the same post.

It's sad that from day 1 it's been a better app for photography than IG in a lot of ways. Really makes you wonder why they keep IG in such an antiquated state.

No reason for Threads to not allow a landscape mode when using the app. The UI doesn't even change when doing desktop mode. Same for IG.

Polls and GIF support launched! If it does not show up for you right away, force close your app and make sure you're updated to the latest version. It seems to have just gone live an hour ago, so it could also be rolling out for some people.

I would like to see the features added hopefully soon:

1) Make an account without needed an Instagram account. And the ability to unlink ours (I made a second IG just for threads).
2) Trending page
3) Hashtags
4) DMs
5) Profile Banner art

Fortunately the trending page has leaked in screenshots, and code for DMs. I believe hashtags at some point were teased by one of the Instagram leads/engineers accounts.

Banner art will probably come naturally over time.

I just really want the ability to use threads without an IG account. And the ability to unlink my existing no use IG account from threads.

Might be your own feed. I don't use instagram, and Threads is basically nothing like my old impression of Instagram. It's basically a more tolerable, nominally less active, more national/world focused pre-Elon, post-2020 Twitter (for me).

Threads is still missing things and I don't know if they'll ever port over, not technology or features (although there's a few), but mostly accidental features of twitter. Local, niche communities, etc. I don't think those will ever port to any other network, they'll just die on the vine or be scattered to the wind like babel.

Hashtags will help for local and niche, so I'm interested in those features launching.

I hope Trends is next.

That will help to bring over sports people which is a pretty large gap right now.

But they've been killing it at constantly adding more things every other week.

I can pin now, one of my most wanted features.

Also I am getting way more engagement on Threads recently than on Twitter. Not sure if I've been chosen by the algorithm, but I've been gaining a lot of followers. Since all my posts have pictures I definitely like Threads' media options.

Yeah, Threads has been popping off. Lots of people using the app.

Also, make sure you have high quality media selected if you're uploading stuff.

Hmmmmm…don't know how I feel about view counts.

They don't affect what I post much, but I understand how they lead to anxiety for some people. Also, really begins to narrow the kind of content that is created and shared when people start chasing engagement metrics.

I like view counts on Era funny enough. Even if your thread doesn't get a lot of comments, it shows that a lot of people at least read the OP, so if you're doing a news dump or a personal story it shows that people at least know about it, even if they don't have anything to share.

The For You tab sucks ass for me right now and no amount of engagement is changing it for me. I have a sudden influx of Islamophobic, ethnocide laden posts and comment chains and it's getting on my nerves since it's flooding out the stuff I might actually want to see Just a couple of days ago, I was getting regular news, pop culture, and tech stuff. Now it's just Wario64 and people denying children are getting bombed to death.

Looks like hashtags (or just tags) are next for Threads. A moderation feature is currently being tested to flag problematic tags. We are also getting more account settings and keyboard shortcuts on web.
