A month ago, a bunch of people at work got together and made a group buy of those kodi streaming boxes that connects to streaming sites, and they just won't shut up about them.

We used to have convos about movies and they were always entertaining, but now all they talk about is how they all streamed Infinity Wars or that blu ray copy of Black Panther or whatever. one of them trashed his entire physical bluray / dvd collection since he 'wont need them anymore' and they've been bullying me and another co-workers because we worked on ours NAS setup last summer and we each spent tons of time converting our legit medias collection to stream with plex. They taunted us for not 'wanting to go all in' or whatever that means.

This is starting to cause tensions and almost degenerated into a shouting match between my co-workers and one of the streamers when my friend argued that pirating culturally important movies like Black Panther (or most new Marvel movies) was just wrong. Every monday lunch break has turned into a race between who will announce first which movies they pirated over the weekend. They always mention that for them, pirating movies is a way of life and they always make us feel inferior because we wait for home/netflix releases. The shouting match I mentioned earlier almost ended with homophobic slurs being used until I mentioned I would report this to HR if it escalated.

It's 10AM right now and I'm actively dreading Lunch break because I know they are going to discuss Infinity Wars and basically spoil the entire thing. I can't believe how insensitive they are to people who decided to respect people who worked on the movies we enjoy.

They are so incredibly annoying about it. yes, we can get it, you are so badass for clicking on a play button on a rogue box running god knows what on your network..

edit: THREAD++ side discussion subject:

Do you guys feel the same about people who pirate current video games? I didn't include that part in the OP but yeah, they almost celebrate and high five each other whenever a Denuvo game is cracked. They're all big time PC Gamers yet pirate every non-mp release. They also slam consoles because you can't easily pirate them.

Considering how shitty is to buy downloudable versions in brazil with subtitles or even dubbed and how bad is the selection of most movie theaters (usually just dubbed and only the popular ones).... I can totally understand people who download movies.
Good alternatives are only starting to appear.

THAT BEING SAID, even considering this, people who download cam quality does not deserves my respect

I know 1-2 people (besides myself) who buys movies. Everyone else pirates everything, although I think they tend to watch this sort of marvel fluff on theaters.

Sounds like your coworkers are just assholes who also pirate things. You're not better than them because you 'respect' the people who made the movie, you're just better than them because you're not being shitty about spoiling movies for others.

Literally nobody I know other than me buys movies on home video. But almost everyone goes to see movies in the theater. Just went to Infinity War on the weekend in a group of 7.

Your co-workers really sound like assholes though. People I know who pirate movies maybe look at me funny when I say I bought a movie, but they don't get all evangelical about their shitty cam rips with hardcoded subs.

People can mind their business.

That being said, those people are the type who won't be able to handle the up keep and monitor the news to know what to do when things change.

Wait, theres no bluray copy of black panther, and Infinity War isnt watchable unless they are watching poor phone camera quality videos

I don't care. Who gives a shit? Same with games and TV. If you don't want to pay, I'm not going to judge you. Got to do what you got to do

Its fucking disgusting and pirates should be ashamed. Could you imagine doing something like, idk, pirating Marvel's Avengers: Infinity War and watching it in your room while eating in your undies? I ceartinly can't

I don't really care but people who act like the only difference between pirates and non-pirates is that non-pirates don't understand how to pirate stuff are morons. Some people seem to have no comprehension of the making of a moral choice. The only questions that are relevant are "Can I do this?" and "Will I get caught?".

Well I mean I'm gonna watch it in my room in my undies while eating eventually. It'll probably be fun. Just not until about August or September.

Like what? The end of the world?
"There distro server changed and I don't know what to do! Well I guess that's it..."

I'm not saying it's hard, I'm saying these all in one boxes are sold to people who just want a cheap easy tinker free solution, and the moment one thing changes, they give up on it.

I'm trying to figure out why people get so heated/involved over what other people are doing. Shouting matches at work over this stuff?

A friend of a friend (at a baby shower of all places) bragged to the guys standing around about selling Kodi boxes and trying to get in contact with someone else who had a better hack. I just didn't engage because I wasn't interested.

I don't care because the movies themselves will make absurd amounts of profit if they are good movies anyway.

I don't use kodi myself, I'd rather wait for the dollar theater.

Let them pirate if they want, but for them to raise any sort of discourse about doing so is about as immature as referring to all pirates as blanket-statement assholes. Both are incredible annoying and, at the root, derived from classism.

I come from an incredibly low income family, and I learned to pirate fairly early. If I had not pirated Photoshop when I was a teenager, I wouldn't have found any interest in graphic design during that time and would not have pursued that path in college, and subsequently for work. Not trying to be anecdotal, but I don't think I'm an asshole for copying a file from a billion-dollar corporation and finding my passion, especially when the opportunity literally would have never arisen in a natural setting during my life.

People who brag about watching shitty cam rips make me laugh

Unless it's a rare instance where the movie is leaked, if you're pirating a movie while it's still in theaters its going to be garbage quality

With modern streaming services there isn't really any argument for it any more other than "it's super obscure and I'll never be able to buy it in my country" and "I don't want to pay for it"

I honestly don't know anyone who pirates anymore with the exception of one family member who does the Kodi streaming thing. Everyone else already has Prime and Netflix so they are satisfied with that and the occasional trip to the movies.

Me on the other hand, loves that no one seems to be aware of the movies you can get from the library for free.

People who brag about watching shitty cam rips make me laugh

Also this. I've had a family member say "We just watched *insert currently in theater movie* at home! It was amazing!* and what they watched was a cell phone video recording.

Like, how could you not wait for it to at least be out before you watch it?

After I graduated college the thought of pirating movies or music just faded away entirely. And with the rise of streaming services its easy to have access to more media than you can reasonably consume for cheap.

It bugs me when I see adults with plenty of income pirating everything like it is going out of style. For those without an income, or who live in a part of the world where options are shit, I understand. Not liking sitting in a movie theater isn't a good enough reason to pirate though.

I won't end friendships over it or anything, but I do silently judge you.

As someone who works in cinema and sees the direct impact on films that are not massive blockbusters I would say support the studios and pay to see them... maybe more films would of had sequels by now

The only time piracy is semi ok is one of the 3 below
It's a US TV show and even thou you sub to every tv channel it's a 6 month wait
The film is no longer in cinema but is also not avaliable for purchase yet
It's a old show/film that is not avaliable for purchase

I'll never understand how people can watch the latest movies in handheld camera quality. Watching anything below 720p makes me feel like I'm not wearing my glasses.

My mom does it now since she learned it from some of her friends. She also pirates cable with some Latino stream service.

I don't mind piracy so long as people are mindful about it. I.E. try to support creators where you can afford to and especially if they are smaller creators or producing something uncommon that you want more of.

Don't really care. I used to pirate too, but don't anymore, well if the product is easily accessible anyway. Once I could afford to buy stuff and the things I wanted became readily available via streaming, digitally, or via localization, then I stopped.

If I don't see a movie in theaters, I now buy UV codes online to see them when they come out.

$2-$6 for the latest releases is cheap as dirt. So cheap, I'd feel pretty stupid "stealing" something.

As for movies that are still in theater, what loser wants to watch some crappy capture?

1080p based off the source material is my minimum. 4k is always preferable.

Edit* Uh, pirating is not ok guys. Not in places where things are easily accessible and/or affordable at least.

Most of my friends and family have absolutely zero notion that pirating movies, games or music is somewhat questionable.
And I can't really judge them since I pirated plenty of shit in my youth. And it wasn't until I started looking at the English-speaking parts of the internet that I understandood that it wasn't okay. It seems like there's a bit of a cultural divide, nobody gives a shit here. So I don't really say anything. I just complain to them about the shitty quality of their pirate streams.

I don't really care what other people do. I have hundreds of blurays and have been called weird for buying them. It's just how some people are.

OP's coworkers just sound like regular assholes that found a common bond. I've worked with people that wouldn't shut up about porn or cars.

Same way I feel about people who pirate music or games. I hope they get sent to jail.

No no no I'm kidding I don't give a fuck.

Edit: also OP did you mistype "co-workers" when you meant "fellow classmates in kindergarten"? Because that's the only people I could imagine caring one way or the other.

As someone who doesn't always have the money or ability to go to the movies understand the desire or need to do so. I myself have done it on occasion and I regularly stream shows online because I never get to catch them when they are on TV. Supernatural, Arrow, and DB Super for example are shows I regularly stream.

I also have had to stream certain animes in order to keep up because it takes too long for English dubs to release.

That being said I wouldnt exactly endorse it at all times or everyone, but I certainly won't judge anyone who does.

Reminds me of another time where I find perfectly acceptable:

The movie got an INSANE delay compared to overseas.
Like the I Kill Giants movie.... it does not even have a release date for Brazil.
