This is really cool. I also like the idea if having player 3 play as Jack. I wonder how that works.
If it's anything like how Jack plays in Horde mode, then he's a great support character. Has more mobility than the other characters and can buff/shield teammates while also being able to harass enemies without necessarily being able to kill them outright like standard characters can. Jack in Horde mode also has the ability to take temporary control over an enemy so you could control a potentially dangerous enemy and use them against the others.

Basically a more "easier" way to play through the campaign without having to play standard Gears with all the aiming and stuff should you want a slower pace or if you're just new to shooters/Gears.

4 is a great way to start. It has a nice prologue what happened and you can play some of it.
Just remember Marcus Fenix is the big hero of the world who destroyed the Locust and the Queen at the end with his Delta Squad. Cole train, Dom, Baird, Marcus.
Gears 2 is pretty relevent to Gears 5.

At least one section of it is.

The Coalition has only spent a little over two years developing Gears 5. Not that you'd necessarily be able to tell that from playing it – it's a truly gorgeous game that wears its ambition on its blood-coated sleeves. Gears 5 has been driven by passion and purpose; The Coalition is eager to treat this experience as an expression of what it is truly capable of. If Gears of War: Ultimate Edition was proof that the studio was worthy of taking control of the franchise, if Gears of War 4 was proof that it could deliver a faithful sequel, then Gears 5 is the team demonstrating that you haven't seen anything from this studio or series yet.

Only God knows what some of these studios will accomplish with more time on their hands.

Metro comparisons seems alright.

These areas are perhaps closer in size to those found in games like Metro Exodus — not truly open world — but designed to foster exploration and reward players who enjoy traversal. To accommodate the format, Gears 5 is the first in the series with an actual map function, giving you access to "?" locations which could contain resources, story elements, or collectibles.

This sounds so neat! A great way to introduce newcomers I'm sure!

Oh, almost forgot about this. Really excited how that plays out. I love that they decided to go back to that.

My only wish is that they don't overdo it with the space requirements. I mean this got me in the mood to replay GoW4, tried to install it and it's 133gb, I mean that's just ridiculous.

Looking great. I will be happy to wrong, as I really doubted how this game was coming together.

Yes, also I think it's a bit like Exodus, and a bit like GOW's "open world".
From what I'm reading it's like Exodus exploration and size of the map, but you can't encounter enemies while you are exploring, only when you drop in the level or area entrance and enter normal Gears gameplay.

Gears preload is already up. 54gb on xbox and 59gb on PC. Also Gears 4 was the same at launch.

Looks fantastic! These previews are very exciting. I'm glad that it appears all those fears people had were unfounded, for now.

I wasn't too hyped for this game despite really enjoying both Gears 4 and Kait's character, but I'm really looking forward to it after the previews and the Halo skins.

From ArsTechnica: "After a six-hour gameplay event at Microsoft's Coalition studio—and hours more spent testing its online versus options in a July beta test—I've come to a conclusion that I can't shake off. The Xbox Game Pass subscription service now has its official, signature game: the something-for-everyone blockbuster that lands less as a "must-buy" product and more as a no-brainer action game to sample. "

cant wait!!

So looking forward to this. As long as the controls feel like tutorial mission from the tech test it will be my favorite gears ever.

Love how the "new" characters look more grown up now. Kait and JD the most. Think mocap helps with that also.

Oh man this eats me so much! Love Gears and LOVED Gears 4 but there is just simply too much out between now and September and a few games have to wait and this is one. The previews make this so much harder, but glad it's turning out amazing!

By the sounds of it the game will have a TV like last time on Gears to get you prepared for Gears 5. It's like Rod has tried to make the game accessible to as many potential players as possible. Hats off to The Coalition!

Or just watch the Gears 4 cut-scenes on YT.

Anyway, I found this really interesting from the Ars preview,

Fergusson confirmed to Ars that the Skiff went through a few iterations before reaching its final playable state—and that it contributed to some hold-ups before the game reached its "alpha" state. Two of the biggest changes in the final version were about usability. Fergusson originally wanted the Skiff to require "accurate sailing simulation. You'd have to figure out wind direction and whether you were riding with the wind." But testers hated overshooting a destination and then turning around, into the wind, at one-fourth the speed. "We had to cheat it," he admitted.

Additionally, the Skiff originally required docking at pre-set locations. "People didn't like being locked on the Skiff," Fergusson noticed. Shaking that up required rebuilding the world map to include "things to do, points of interest, and smaller combat encounters in the middle of nowhere."

I'm glad they dropped the accurate sailing sim. That sounds frustrating as fuck.

But this...

And then there's the issue of the game's outdoor scenes suffering from an insane number of invisible walls and awkward geometry blockades. At times, it's as ridiculous as stuff from 2011's The Witcher 2. It wasn't enough to torpedo my interest in the game, by any stretch, but a certain generation of games fan will absolutely be driven nuts by this sloppy edge of the campaign.

Oof. Hopefully it's not too annoying.

Microsoft didn't provide any screens of the Skiff in action for some bonkers reason. It looks really, really nice whipping around through open plains. Instead, they just gave us this shot of the thing buried in sand. Sigh.

Sigh indeed, Ars. Sigh indeed.

Finally, a long awaited shake up to MS first party pillars.
Now I am excited to play this, and am very confident about Halo Infinite.
