Really happy to see such glowing previews, really curious to see where this ends up review wise now (Not like that matter at the end of the day though).
Would be rad to see a 1st party MS title manage 90+ MC that isn't Forza.

Not even gonna read much because the game is on Game Pass in like a week anyway, but good to know that it's a great evolution of the formula. One thing I never liked about the campaigns so far is how incredibly linear they were, with the game aritificially creating "oh you gotta split 2 by 2" a billion times with the same lame excuses. Having open world-ish parts, an RPG-ish progression and side content along with a more varied gameplay is really what I wanted from a new Gears. Somebody might say why I don't go play something else if I don't enjoy Gears' linearity, but games don't need to remain stale. The Gears 1 formula was one thing in 2006, but in 2019 I want something more ambitious. This sounds like it delivers. And since it's on Game Pass I'll play it without risking to waste my money. Bring it!

About raytracing

"We have some ray-traced shadows as part of our lighting techniques. In our maps, the shadows that are further away are ray-traced, whereas closer up they're cascaded shadow maps, so they're fully dynamic. That really allows us to have ultimately higher-quality shadows, the ray-traced shadows let us have shadows that get softer as they get farther away, from the shadow techniques," said Rayner.

While Gears 5 doesn't join those doubling down on ray tracing in 2019, Rayner alluded to the beginning of future ambitions. "It's all in the GPU, compute-based, ray-traced shadows. This is earlier work, that works across all platforms, versus requiring you to have bought ray trace-specific GPU hardware. And so this works on the Xbox One, works on the Xbox One S, as well as the PC."

Shit, I need to play through the first 4 games ASAP. Haven't played Gears in years and started the first one again two days ago.

You can shoot the ice that enemies are standing on causing them to fall through it. Rod, you are a madman.

This is all sounding fantastic, now how do you fast forward time till next Friday, anybody know?

problem is, Gears 4 campaign is trash, horde mode style full of corridor, uninteresting enemies and stupid cliffhanger, you've been warned XD

Haha, yeah I mean like I mentioned I'm interested in this because it's such a series shakeup - starting with 4 would likely in my case mean watching a playthrough of it on Youtube before 5 lol.

Ignore that post. You'll have an ok time with it. You're getting tight gunplay, a new setting, and new characters that is only gonna get better. You'll get a better appreciation for the evolution 5 is taking.

The Gears stories aren't really that involved. I think 4 even had an intro recap you could watch and then just read/watch the few important parts from that game. You can pretty easily get the general idea and then play 5.

Yeah don't know what his/her problem was with Gears 4. It's a very enjoyable game with incredibly clean looking visuals, especially on XBX/PC.

Gears 4 campaign was good. Had some rough spots with Horde areas and a bit of a slow start but the story is good and gameplay is fun.

The thing did get a 84 on Metacritic. It's no where near as bad as what was posted above.

Agreed. Gears 4 was solid and looked and ran great even on base Xbox One.

This is sounding amazing. Hard to believe they will just throw this in the laps of people with gamepass on day one.

This honestly sounds so good! I don't understand why they have been so reluctant to show anything from the campaign. Like it's cool for people wanting to go in blind, but I really think there would be a lot more excitement surrounding this game if it had just been marketed better.

It's probably worth reading a summary of Gears 1-3 and maybe watching a YouTube summary of 4.

Glowing previews. I do hope they don't have too many RPG elements and sidequests. I liked Gears 4 for its linearity.

Feel like I'm a minority tho.
