Digging the aesthetics of both the trailer and the poster. A stylish Saw is something I can get behind.

Don't know what to make of this. A Saw movie without the "Saw" elements? Could be interesting.

Though this being a Saw movie of course I'm anticipating the movie to still end with Chris Rock dying, the other cop to be the new Jigsaw, and Sam Jackson to make it out alive after being led to believe that Chris Rock is the new Jigsaw.

And it gets better with every movie. Jigsaw was a bad movie, but this shit is 👌

Say what you will about this series but Charlie Clouser's score is legitimately unmatched.

Oh. Bousman is directing this?

EHHHHHHHH....

His run of Saw movies was the most hit-and-miss of the bunch.

After watching the trailer again with non-potato quality, I'm even more excited than before.

The synopsis:
A sadistic mastermind unleashes a twisted form of justice in SPIRAL, the terrifying new chapter from the book of SAW. Working in the shadow of an esteemed police veteran (Samuel L. Jackson), brash Detective Ezekiel "Zeke" Banks (Chris Rock) and his rookie partner (Max Minghella) take charge of a grisly investigation into murders that are eerily reminiscent of the city's gruesome past. Unwittingly entrapped in a deepening mystery, Zeke finds himself at the center of the killer's morbid game.

SPIRAL stars Chris Rock, Max Minghella, Marisol Nichols, and Samuel L. Jackson, and is produced by the original SAW team of Mark Burg and Oren Koules. The film is directed by Darren Lynn Bousman and written by Josh Stolberg & Pete Goldfinger.

Same city, direct sequel. It's Saw 9 in everything but name, the first promo still show old references:
Looks like a photo of Obi in the police board, and I'm pretty sure we've seen the door Samuel L Jackson is walking into

Weirdly enough, it looks like it leaves Jigsaw in a kinda weird place in the canon lol

Saw 2, 3 and 4 are cinematic masterpieces compared to Saw 5 or Saw 7, ESPECIALLY in regards to how they looked. Remember, with the exception of Saw 2, none of these movies were written by their directors. Other than the overused transitions they direction really wasn't bad in Saw 2-4 and certainly leagues above something like Saw 7.

3 is my second-least favorite of the bunch for a whole lot of arbitrary reasons. 7 is obviously the worst but I can't say I blame Greutert for that as much as the powers-that-be; he'd already done 6 before that which would've been the ideal finale as it's easily the best post-2 film in the series. 4 is all over the place for me; I enjoy bits and pieces of it but I think I've soured on the ending as I've become kind of tired of the formula of depicting the protagonists as monumental idiots who are only kept around for longer than one movie so they can die in stupid ways (the way they closed out Matthews, Rigg and Jeff's arcs still bother me). 5 is basically meh; it's clear they wanted a more return-to-roots structure after the last two movies got too complicated. It's forgettable.

If this is Bousman at his Saw 2 level, then I'm optimistic enough.

Saw 2 wasn't even written to be a Saw sequel. It was a stand-alone movie script, which they bought and made it Saw 2.

It's absolutely weird to me, that I'm actually looking forward to a SAW-sequel.
It definitely looks very Se7en inspired, which is a good thing.

Saw 5 is easily my least favourite because it's so fucking boring and bland. "Previously on Saw" basically. At least Saw 3D committed to its absurdity.

Again though, Bousman had little to do with the ending, the protagonists or the character's story arcs. He had no involvement in the script with these characters. I think it's important to be aware of the different roles in filmmaking - blaming a director for a movie's script when he didn't actually work on that doesn't make too much sense to me.

Spiral was once again written by the writers of Jigsaw, which is reason enough to be sceptical imo. Bousman is "only" responsible for directing the movie, though. And that point at least seems to have worked out very well judging from the trailer. We'll have to see about the writing.

Jigsaw (the movie)'s main problem was that it needed too hard to tie into, as the name implied, Jigsaw. He died 5 movies earlier but they still needed to work the "but what if jigsaw is not kill" route which was predictably not very believeable for anyone who followed the series. Spiral seems to be the movie that finally (for better or worse, we'll see) pushes us away from John Kramer's chronicles and moves into a new world, one where we're dealing with the true aftermath of his existence, not the direct consequences and the plans he himself put in motion. I think this extra freedom will allow the director to flesh out his ideas instead of having them work around the impossible premise of the previous movie.

I mean, I guess that could be the way this is going...but did you ever consider that maybe, and you should sit down for this, Jigsaw actually had ANOTHER apprentice who is now keeping up his legacy?

Now that's a great idea I'd love to see on screen!

Isn't it possible that this movie will be a soft reboot? Picking and choosing what movies/events are canon, etc. Might be the only way to navigate the more preposterous aspects.

Hehe. But even the full title of this movie heavily implies this is someone (maybe even a cult) that is inspired by Jigsaw but isn't related anymore. And that is very much what this series needs right now, as amazing as Tobin Bell was, is and always will be. A decade passed since the original ending, no point in retconning shit into the original movies anymore as most people don't care or long forgot. It would be amazing to see the social impact of Jigsaw's murdering spree, maybe get a glimpse or Dr. Gordon in a psych ward, but end it at that. We don't need apprentices anymore, that train is looooong gone and I honestly doubt they want to go that route again after the tepid reception of Jigsaw and everything this trailer, title, etc. imply here.

The only true connection to the old movies I could see working is that the ending of VII showed two other masked people alongside Gordon. What if those people started a cult of Jigsaw worshipping or something? Gordon didn't actually use any of John' assets to deliver his final request against Hoffman, but he could have either found an existing Jigsaw cult or got the help from some randos who ended up being obsessed with Jigsaw. Now that's a connection I could get behind because it would be a good way to explain what happened to Hoffman and Gordon, plus these new guys would have 0 direct contact with John Kramer or his plans, no inside info or anything of the sorts, so even for the spectators it wouldn't be a confusing mess anymore.

I worked on custom music for this trailer!

They didn't use mine though 😂 Oh well, hoping it'll show up in an international trailer or TV spot or something.

I love the Saw movies as a whole, I'm here for this. This trailer doesn't show enough for me to know how to feel one way or another, but that's fine. I find horror movie trailers are often very misleading any ways. You can make a very good trailer for a terrible movie and vice versa.

Not watching the trailer. I'm happy enough to hear that it seems to be closer to the first movie than the rest. I'll probably see this when it comes out, been a while since I saw a horror movie (unless The Rise of Skywalker counts).

We've heard so many Hello Zepp adaptations throughout the years, but it's amazing how new and new versions still sound so damn good.

So it's Jigsaw 2 but not Jigsaw 2

Also having minor stars from the series up to fucking Chris Rock and Sam Jackson is possibly one of the biggest upgrades the series has had

Excited for this.

Bit of a different scenario than usual actually, regarding the crew. Yes, it's the same people, but here's how it went from all the leaks and rumors, this one is actually being spearheaded by Lionsgate rather than Twisted Pictures, unlike the other ones. And the original idea came from Rock, and was only adapted into a Saw movie by the old crew.

That's fair

2 > 3 > 1 > 6 > 3D > 4 > 5 > Jigsaw

The simplest traps were often the most brutal (barbed wire, pit of syringes, metal straw slot for your arms, machine that just twists your arms, legs, and head until they snap, push face into knives)

Hello Zepp has got to be one of the most iconic theme songs in the 00s. Constantly being remixed and always sounding so good.

The trailer actually looked pretty compelling compared to the entirety of the last four films. And Chris Rock wrote this? Man, I wouldn't have imagined him being the one to reboot, write, and star in a Saw spin-off about a murderer targeting cops.

How timely.

And holy Christ, this is a great poster. I wouldn't have imagined a Saw spin-off getting such a gorgeous poster. Sounds like they're really tapping into a proper crime/Se7en vibe over the torture porn.
