Question for Americans here.
Why is it even possible to become a cop after a really really short time at the Academy?
Like it seems its not even half a year. How can you even learn all the legal stuff in just about 22 weeks? When I was learning German police law for my major that alone took one semester. And thats just the "theoretical" part. Nothing about weapon training, how to talk to culprits and victims, how to write a good report, how to act in certain situations etc.
war on crime, so they basically have a quick-set 'basic' type program to get those officers ready for the streets as soon as is "reasonably possible"
It would be nice if they had to go through an actual multiple year program, to find people who are actually suited to law enforcement and public safety, but again in America we have a war on crime mentality, so they need people who can be trusted to hold guns and use the force. but that doesn't address underlying social issues built into the fabric of this country's society, or its law enforcement.
