Retro Studios must have all new people there now.

Metroid Prime came out in 2002, we're now in 2018. How many people stay at the same company for over 15+ years later? Anyone who was already 30 back in 2002 is now over 50.

Next Level Games still has like the same top 10 people back when they started in 2002.

But Retro has only like 4 or 5 guys back from Metroid Prime 1. They do still have a ton of people left from Metroid Prime 3. In part because Retro only had 30 people for Prime 1.

Tropical Freeze for the 3DS, oh and a new game based on an old Nintendo IP. I'm all for original games being made but when you already have a healthy catalogue of untapped potential why not take advantage of that?

2018-2002= 16 years

30 + 16 = 46 lol

But yeah they must have a lot of new people.

There's still some guys, 12 or 13, but i pretty sure that in 5 years there won't be anyone from the First Prime anymore, there's already some retired and dead guys among the original Prime Team

Honestly I think Retro is way past their prime. Their output just isn't healthy. Too little of it. I doubt Nintendo will give them a big budget with this efficiency.

To be honest I'm somehow less confident that it'll show up this year than I was for it showing up last year. I thought for sure that it'd get revealed at E3 2017 and then it didn't happen.

Let's put it this way, since Prime 3 wrapped in 2007....over the last literally 11 years all they've put out is two 2D Donkey Kong platformers.

Literally 11 years of just two 2D platformers. Does that not seem ridiculous? Early production of DKC:R probably started around early 2008 at the latest.

Man don't fudge the numbers around. Put some context around everything.

DKCR on the Wii was late 2010 release. They helped on Mario Kart which released in 2011 and was still developing Tropical Freeze.

Then DKCTF on the HD Wii U was February 2014. They took time to learn HD and still put it out while helping with Mario Kart 7 a couple years earlier.

Now it's 2018 and they started late 2013. If anything why wouldn't the conclusion be they're working on a bigger game?

Nintendo's main studio themselves made:

Super Mario Galaxy in 2007
Mario Kart Wii in 2008
Super Mario Galaxy 2 in 2010
Super Mario 3D Land in 2011
Super Mario 3D World in 2013
Mario Kart 8 in 2014, then DLC tracks in 2016
Captain Toad in 2015
Super Mario Odyssey in 2017

Literally the same timeframe it took Retro to make two Donkey Kong games.

I'm sorry, but you're trolling at this point. You're comparing Nintendo which has many teams making many games from Mario Kart to 3D Mario, with teams inside those teams to ONE TEAM at Retro. Are you serious??

Nintendo EAD is not made up of just one division.

Whatever came of that Diddy Kong Racing 2 rumor that Emily posted about a few times?

I mean she's taken back any retro rumor she had. That doesn't mean Diddy Kong Racing 2 isn't a possibility. They do have Mario Kart experience that they can apply to DKR2

I didn't start that bogus Diddy Kong Racing 2 rumor.

I was the person who shot down the DKR2 rumor multiple times.

From 2013:https://mynintendonews.com/2013/02/05/monster-games-apparently-arent-making-diddy-kong-racing-wii-u/

The 3D Mario team did 3D World in 2 years, Captain Toad in 1 year, and Mario Odyssey in 3 years which was super efficient.

The Zelda team needed 5 years for Skyward Sword and then 5 for BotW which was good efficiency for BotW... not as good for Skyward Sword.

The Mario Kart team usually makes one game every three years.

They have been unusually absent for quite a while now, when was the last update from them?

If they are a no show this E3 I hope someone clarifies their status with a Nintendo employee.

A couple of their employees ported Tropical Freeze over to Switch.

That's been the only news with them. They have almost no social media presence.

If they're working on a DKC game, I actually don't expect them at E3 this year, even if the game is near completion. If they're working on something else, I think they'll be there.

Like with Prime Trilogy and Returns 3D?

Also, just remembered some form of job posting for the company just recently? Or did I read it wrong?

Edit: Yeah from January 2017.

I expect the big retro announcement to be that it's actually two announcements. DK3 coming in early 2019 and some new IP announced and coming after that (some of the reporting on Retro suggests something more mature than DK).

Retro actually is super annoying and mostly hires people for jobs they don't advertise for. There's plenty of people they've hired in the last several years for jobs that weren't posted by Retro because they're too secretive to say that they're hiring.

... It's kind of dumb.

If Retro doesn't show up at E3 this year, then we can start assuming that something not that good must be going at Retro. But I will think with optimism and predict they're just hard at work on either a new IP (not likely) or bringing to life a forgotten Nintendo IP with a new game. F-Zero or stuff. I would love DKCR 3 just for the meltdown on the internet though.

Whose fault is it that they're so secretive? That's really why we're in the position. Why even have a Twitter account? Did Nintendo mandate them to have no social contact with people? They do no interviews. Not a single interview with anyone. It's ridiculous. Let's get a face for Retro. Let people talk

I have been saying this for years now, I DON'T THINK RETRO IS WORKING ON A GAME. I THINK THEY ARE THE LEAD DESIGN TEAM FOR SUPER NINTENDO WORLD. If I was Nintendo and I had to put together a team that could create MARIO KART VR and a ride based on F-ZERO and also not have them take away form the console gaming, I WOULD PICK RETRO.

This really isn't possible to say unless their next game comes out and sucks total ass. Sony Santa Monica didn't release a game for 6 years and just turned around what's being called one of the best of the gen. So let's wait before condemning them.

However, everyone here seems to be under the impression that they're making a 2D platformer. If it's taken Retro six years to release yet another fucking 2D Donkey Kong (longer than it took them to make the entire Metroid Prime Trilogy) that probably still wont have online co-op, then Retro are in HUGE trouble.

Edit: I've never thought about it this way before....this is a dire situation.

From highest hopes to least high:
  1. New IP
  2. Existing, long-dormant IP
  3. Metroid Prime 4
  4. 3D DKC
  5. Tropical Freeze sequel

You would expect a Switch successor to a WiiU title to use the engine and have considerable asset reuse, making development time much quicker.

I personally highly doubt that Retro's new title is another 2d DK platformer

Nintendo has given no reason to assume Retro is making another 2D DK, and if they were whose to say that it's their only project, or that they aren't collaborating with another group on it just for quality control. Nothing about their situation is known - Don't be so dramatic

Isn't Monolith Soft's Tokyo branch comparable, maybe slightly larger? And they released Xenoblade X, Project X Zone 2, and Xenoblade 2 all since Retro released Tropical Freeze.

Monolith is larger and contracts+collaborates with other Japanese studios along with EPD. They also have Kyoto as an asset studio.

Likely working on future expansions for labo at this point. Maybe they'll make a metroid kit where you build an arm cannon and play a target practice light gun game.

I think I remember that a guy from Retro posted here recently. Can't find which thread though. If he reads us, he could at least tell us they're not in the middle of a development hell... Unless they are.
At that point I'm not expecting anything honestly.
