The name is actually taken from a swedish pen and paper roleplaying game, which this game seems to be based off. The original game was released in the eighties under the name Mutant. The latest edition added a subheading, År noll, which translates to Year zero.

Wait! This takes place in Sweden? Now I gotta buy it!

I played the pen and paper version of this, or a prequel. We all played animals in an abandoned facility deep in the mountains (of Sweden) and were trying to escape our robotic overlords. It should have solid world building, there's a ton of that already.

Can't say much at the moment, the cap will be lifted soon enough however.

All impressions would be from the first two or three hours of the game the preview covered. Embargo for that was up on the 1st.

Cool, looking forward to whenever the lid is pulled off coverage for the game.

Is this getting a (PS4) physical release? Can't find it anywhere for preorder.

It's digital only "at launch".

It's more Fire Emblem like because the characters are all predetermined I believe. We'll see how it works out but that would be one of my main concerns throughout the game. I much prefer the random nature of XCOM operatives.

I'm cautiously optimistic but a game like this the first few hours are very likely to be the most impressive.

Correct. Previews quoted the developer as the game only having 5, preset, characters.

The solution was to cut down the core team. Where Firaxis' XCOM gives players access to an endless stream of fresh recruits, Mutant: Year Zero will only have five characters to play with.

Used to play the Mutant p&p back in the late 80 and early 90s. Still have my Mutant 2089 boxes here in the room on the shelf. Big fan of XCOM gameplay too. Needless to say, I'm hyped about this, now I just have to decide on PC or PS4, if the game plays well with a controller I'm going with the PS4.

I'm so down for this. Love the look. Expanding on what the typical strategy genre does is what I need. Also good lord is Game Pass becoming a hell of a deal.

Keen for this, digging the environments and style. Haven't touched any XCOM-like games since XCOM 2 vanilla.

My most anticipated Indie at the moment. Love Xcom 2. Different twist on the formula sounds great on paper. Looks great in motion.

Anyone else notice the quality of Indies going up a bunch of notches lately? Indies are now hitting that AA bar far more frequently. This thing came out of nowhere.

Sadly I'm one of those people who has trouble getting into games like this. It's why I skipped Fallout Tactics back in the day as well because I was so used to X-com and Final Fantasy Tactics (I always ignored story characters).

I really like the look of this - it's giving the same hidden gem feels that Shadow Tactics gave me and I freakin loved that game.

I pay a lot of attention to game previews and I've never heard of this.

In any event, this looks quite interesting and I will definitely give it a shot.

Btw, I love the art direction. It has a Pokémon movie feel to it.

A game like this? That's pretty much every game for me. I very rarely get "wowed" by games past the first few hours. It's usually like this for me:

1st Third of the game (i.e. the "Honeymoon Phase") - Wow this looks/feels/sounds great! Can't wait to play some more. Would give this game a 9!
2nd Third - This is good. I'm making progress. Will pick-up that other new game after I finish this one. Would rate this one a solid 8.
Last Third - Starting to feel like a slog. Ready for it to end. The game's a 7 at best. Where's that other new game I already bought?
