Fake. It won't have the memory expansion port and it won't have 4 ports. Probably cheaper to finally go wireless if they're going to have 4p support. And with only 1 or 2 controllers coming with the system, why waste money on controller ports that probably won't get used.

Its mind boggling all the people either complaining about or discrediting this because of the expansion port. I would bet just about anything that if/when a N64 Mini releases it will have an aesthetic only expansion port, It would look off otherwise.

Mario Party and Smash alone make four player compatibility a must for the system. N64 had lots of games that supported four player game modes and many fond and nostalgic memories are of these multiplayer moments. So four controller ports is more of an argument for team real not team fake. And the expansion port, as many have already said, is there to make it look like the real thing.

I agree, it will have an aesthetic expansion port on top that won't open and it will definitely have four controller ports unless they only put single or two player games on the system, which would be such a dumb idea that I can kinda see Nintendo doing it.

There's literally no reason to assume ther won't be four player support which was a hallmark of the N64. As for the "Memory expansion port" It's a cosmetic flourish to mimic the original console not an actual port. The eject button on the SNES isn't a real eject button but it's still there

Didn't put much thought into the 2 or 4 controller ports topic, but I think you're right. IF they only have 2 ports they def won't have games that supported more than 2 players. Can you imagine Mario Party or Smash limited to 2 players? People would flip.

What? Of course it will have four ports.

That's one of the iconic features of the console.

Not only that but people are acting like its a giant hurdle to overcome or something, I don't get it. I just see it as a cheap easy way for Nintendo to sell more N64 controllers. Not like you can't easily slap 4 controllers onto a Pi already.

The angles of the photos plus the lighting make me think this is a 3D render, not real photos.

So I'm going fake.

For real. It'll come with two but they'll bank bank off extras at retail for stuff like Mario Party.

Hopefully the controller build quality is better than the original because Mario Party will destroy those analog sticks.

since it uses the Wii plug for controllers, people could just use a Classic Controller or several of those GC-shaped CCs that were released for SSB4. there's also adapters around to plug other types of controllers.
i don't think controllers will be such a problem as long as people aren't super particular about the N64 controller.
also, the memory expansion port can be cosmetic just like the eject button on the SNES Classic.

Didn't a mod said it will come this year?

I don't think it was a mod, but it doesn't matter if a mod said it. I mean this specific thread with that specific source and images. If the thread hasn't been closed down, it's because the mods know something we don't. Otherwise they would have closed it down because a reddit rumor is not a reliable source to make a thread.

Smash Bros., however, is a pretty good stick-flopper too. I really hope they switch to GameCube-style sticks for these, if and when they do come about.

This would be really cool and I hope they do it. Theres a fine line between maintaining the original and making tweaks due to QOL, and I think switching to that would make sense.

I'd imagine it's would be cheaper for them not to be using those optical mechanisms this time round and to just use the existing mechanisms that all other pads use

I agree. I think they'll have one just to make it look authentic. It would definitely look off without one.

Fake, the controler panel looks like really stupid design, it'll just be a normal flap that goes up and down.

Fake renders of a product that's probably real. Expansion pack slot looks too detailed and would probably just be smoothed over, front panel seems silly.

If this is real, and they release this with the original styled N64 controller... then I'll just be using the Wii's Classic Controller Pro. One upside to those ports, I guess.

It looks like some modification someone did to an actual N64. I can hardly make any sense of the console.

Looks okay I guess. Might be a prototype or a test product before finalizing it. Not sure how I feel the way of the controller input flap extends that way just like SNES mini. Maybe I prefer if it acts like a door, with hinges or something.

The memory expansion part seems definitely just a decoration without any function at all, like how Commodore 64 Mini keyboard with no keys to press.

This is what the ideal line up would be (Rare games excluded for obvious reasons)

Super Mario 64
Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards
Super Smash Bros
Star Fox 64
Pokemon Snap
Paper Mario
Mario Kart 64
Mario Golf
1080 Snowboarding
Harvest Moon 64
Wave Race 64
F Zero X
Bomberman 64
Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon
Mischief Makers
Snowboard Kids
Sin and Punishment (Japanese only coming to the west)
Custom Robo (Japanese only coming to the west FOR THE FIRST TIME)
Bangai-O (Japanese only coming to the west FOR THE FIRST TIME)

Ogre Battle 64 should replace something.

And in a perfect world WWF No Mercy but I realize its impossible with the various licenses needed.

My niche pick that no one else wants: International Superstar Soccer 98.

This is my take as well. It's easy to fake a system when you know what it has to look like and can reference prior Classics for other details. The lack of controller shots also make me think it is fake because the creator isn't sure how the controllers will look -- meaning if they will be identical to an N64 controller or gets some sort of tweak.

Only reason I ask was cause I wasn't sure if the NES and Snes originally came with 2. I was too young to remember. Don't know why but I expect the N64 Mini to only come with one.

I think it's fake but one is coming. I think Nintendo and MS will strike out a deal and get those iconic Rare games on the classic. MS and Nintendo have been on good terms lately and I hope they could work something out.

For the PS1 classic they are including two controllers even though the launch model they're basing it off of had only one.

Similarly N64 would need to pack two - for important marketing purposes alone, and to include certain games. Would they dare to cut the number of games included or bump the seemingly agreed upon price range if manufacturing costs really became an issue?

The NES and SNES both had launch packages that included two controllers. The N64 only included one controller at launch.

Convenient that it is all close up shots in a light box.

The system is real, but this may be fake.
