I've seen what happens when someone doesn't want to be internet famous from a leak (not someone under NDA, just someone flat out terrified of the blowback from the toxic Nintendo fandom if they were wrong since they basically leaked what they did as a joke thinking it was fake), and Loz ain't backpedaling near hard enough for me to buy that.
Yeah. Sakurai didn't know how popular K.Rool was. The Ballot ended up being huge for characters and showing him how popular some characters are.

Speaking of, I'm actually glad Waluigi didn't make it in, since this means he can make it in next time with a rose based moveset.
The bolded is why I assume Geno is a character this time around. I refuse to believe they went around Squeenix's draconian licencing only for a paltry Mii costume.

The gangplank galleon remix being the focal point of this joke kinda makes it fall flat when both Ashley and Waluigi have music associated with them in smash.
The Smash website's rendition of Gangplank Galleon is fantastic.

I want a stage on top of the Clock Town tower that transforms four times, ala Pokemon stadium. It just rotates 90 degrees and has a different quadrant of the world showing behind it, with different platform layouts. It takes place over a three day day/night timescale, at the end of which it plays the final 12 hours music and the giants hold back the moon, then the days reset.

I just think it's equally possible that Sakurai knew K. Rool was popular, but still elected not to put him in for various reasons (Melee's rushed development schedule, his size, the fact that he hadn't been in a game for a decade)
obviously with Ultimate he decided to let some of that slide, just like he did with Ridley, and we already know he realized how popular Ridley was

It's possible that Square might have jacked up the price for Geno to make him playable. I assume Nintendo had to renegotiate all the third party contracts to get everyone back.
Meanwhile, Ridley:
background cameo -> opening cinematic cameo -> boss in adventure mode -> stage hazard -> ballot hits -> finally playable
In hindsight, it's kinda surprising they didn't just make a Ridley costume for one of the Mii Fighters. Maybe they didn't want to rub more salt in the wound after the infamous interview with Sakurai.

I could see a Lumiose remix, actually? Delfino Plaza finally got a remix, Parasite Queen got a remix (imo the real main theme for Orpheon)
