And could have sworn I had this active, but seems I didn't have auto-renewal for my annual pass so it's expired now. Well either way think I'll opt to buy my annual pass in full next time if only because one can apparently get a discount when passes are close to expiring (which isn't available for flex pay) and because I can just pay in payments via PayPal. Might give it a wait until my younger sister is much more freely available.

My birthday's at the end of the month so my wife and I are taking a long weekend trip to Dollywood and Kings Island.

I've never been to Dollywood and that last time I was at King's Island it was still a Paramount Park. Super excited.

The good news is that lightning rod might actually be open at Dollywood now that it's on a chain lol. You'll also get to see Cedar Fair's decent investment in Kings Island, with both a hyper and giga B&M at KI.

Alright we got info for the Studio Tour 60th anniversary celebration.

blog.discoveruniversal.com

Guide to the Studio Tour 60th Anniversary Celebration at Universal Studios Hollywood

It all began with the Studio Tour – so let's celebrate it!

It will run form April 26 to August 11.

The Earthquake section will reopen on time with a new modern day aesthetic.

One of the discontinued attractions that will be brought back is the Runaway Train.

And we will in fact get to step out of the vehicles to check out the sets more closely.

And I'm gonna guess Norman Bates is the certain someone the blog is hinting.

And of course there is the usual food and merch themed to the tour, but some will be themed to Woody Woodpecker and Chilly Willy. Never imagined they would be part of this major celebration.

And there is in fact pass holder preview days for the tour as well for April 18, 22, 23, 24.

What is the state of the tour now? I'll be at Universal for the first time in a week or so, and haven't really researched what is going on.

There is some construction work going on there to prepare for the event, so you might skip certain section. Was at Universal last weekend and we skipped the picture cars, the flood section and the War of the Worlds section.

My wife works on the spine team at an orthopaedic clinic in Orlando and they see a lot of Disney/Cirque/Universal patients. She was telling me, with Disney, they have to be really specific about on-the-job restrictions with their patients or else Disney will try to put them to work. One of the specific restrictions they have to write is "No Character Heads," which is something not many other spine surgeons in the world ever have to write hahahaha

Theme Park fans, I have a gamer question

I know there are a ton of games that let you make your own park and roller coaster, but are there any games that let you design your own Dark Ride? Ive never been a big roller coaster fan but I love Disneyland dark rides, I think i'd be so cool to design them.

That'd be pretty cool, even knowing it won't look quite like that in real life, haha.

I just hope they put in a decent number of new rides. Only getting 2 rides in Galaxy's Edge will always be a bummer (and I'm not even a big fan of the Millennium Falcon ride).

Technically you can do this on Planet Coaster if you're really good at the game. There are some crazy elaborate Alien and Moonraker rides on Youtube.

On the upside, shouldn't be too many construction walls all over with where it is located.

Downside, I wonder how long the railroad is going to be out of service again.

What for? I'll be there in three weeks.
First up, they're re-doing Dinoland out in Animal Kingdom - they're re-theming it to Tropical America, with Indiana Jones, Encanto and Coco attractions. That looks pretty close to getting going - they're all permitted up, and Imagineering did a big presentation about what they're doing out there this week, so I'd guess a D23 announcement and construction starting not long after.

Secondly, they're planning big stuff for Magic Kingdom, too - they're getting permits ready to prepare the land out past Big Thunder Mountain for... something. Possibly a Villains Land, possibly something else. Potentially with a view to linking everything back up around Haunted Mansion.

In the short term, Tiana's Bayou Adventure is opening up in a few months, and they've just announced a June date for Test Track closing for its retheme too.

There are whispers of them building something on the Adventureland expansion area and in Animation Courtyard in Hollywood Studios too, but those are further off.

None of the construction projects are quite started, and probably won't be for a few months yet, but they're building up again - I don't think there's any coincidence that these things started rolling after they squashed their feud with the state.

Have they announced anything about it other than it's getting a modern retheme? I think I heard rumblings its going to be more like the original world of motion, but I have no idea if that had any truth to it.
I would expect the ride to be the same other than what you are looking at. The exterior track is still there in the concept art.

One year from date of purchase, unless they still have the promo where you get an additional 3 months.
One quick adjustment: It's from the 1st date you actually use it. At least that is how it is for USO. So I'd imagine it's the same for USH. So the first time you actually scan into the parks starts as your "1 year" mark (or 15 months with promo).

So if you buy an 1 year AP today (ignoring the promo to make this easier), but don't actually use it till May 1st, it will last till May 1st 2025.

Wow, that's really great of them then. I went ahead and pulled the trigger on the USH pass since it was $50 off but I won't be able to use it until next month. Good to know, thanks!

First time at USH today. Did early access for Mario and it was really worth it. Had done all the activities and rode Mario Kart twice by the time the early period ended.

Mario Kart is kinda overwhelming with everything going on physically around you plus also all the stuff you have to keep track of in your visors vision. The first time on we skipped past all the instructions so I had no idea what to do really. Ended up thinking the horn in the middle shot shells and not the buttons on the wheel. Second time saw all the intro videos, but the steering wheel wasn't working so I got no coins for turning nor any badges/trophies for the app. Maybe when I go back tomorrow everything will be working.

But the queue and whole land is just amazing. There is nothing there that is just a prop, every that is supposed to be moving is and it gives the land tons of life. There is some wear and tear though, some blocks don't work, or have their bottoms punched out. One of the periscopes is out. Just a little rough around the edges.

All the activities for getting keys and the final showdown game were really fun. As was looking for secrets and earning badges. Some badges seem like they are only possible for locals, or seemingly impossible if bricks happen to be out of order. Overall though really fun.

Got reservation for Toadstool Cafe pretty easily, though the link on the signs told me there was no availability all day, after googling I found a reddit post with a link that actually works, and could essentially choose any time. Fireball spaghetti was really good. Mario burger typical theme park burger. Fizzy boba drink really good.

Besides Super Nintendo Land, things that stand out are the really cool Pets darkride, the other Mario Cafe in the upper lot with more cool drinks and stuff to eat. Lots of stuff similar/same as USO. Liked having a tram tour since not going on MGMs in years. Some parts obviously skipped. Lots of parts dedicated to shows or movies I have no interest in, adverts for peacock, etc.

Staying at Hilton across the street is super convenient. Crowds really low, longest wait was 30 mins. Weather sucks. Going for one more day then down to San Diego for the week, then back to Disneyland next weekend.

I think Super Nintendo World as a whole is really fantastic, but it's definitely sensory overload too. After a few hours of being there (doing the band activities, mario kart, just kinda wandering around), The way all the sounds just kind of bounce around in the land had really gotten to me. I was fairly sleep deprived from HHN the night before, but I feel like even fully rested and with zero hangover, it's still a lot. I do love the energy of the land though.

Some more closing thoughts after our second day at USO:
- Jurassic Park is so much better than IoA's. The whole aquarium section, so many more dinosaurs, how well animated they were, how much better shape every thing was in. It was a bunch of fun for a type of ride I don't really go for usually.
- Waterworld show is great too. I liked that all the actors really leaned into their personalities, and the big finale plane. Also that there wasn't this conceit that it was a production being filmed like Indiana Jones.
- Rained almost all day, managed that by riding Mario Kart several times in a row, until our Toadstool Cafe time. Finally got a few good runs on the ride with everything functional. My score I think was ~130 at the most, but today Team Mario won most times and I found all the hidden ? blocks (though they should really reward you with more coins for hitting them).
- Had same HP beers as USO. Dragon Scale still best. Hot butter beer with rum is delicious. Don't drink at the bar for over an hour then try to go on the studio tour.

Islands of Adventure has the Jurassic Park visitor center and the coaster at least. They really need to do a big refurb on River Adventure though, while still keeping it JP themed.

Canada's Wonderland appears to be getting a huuuuuuuge launch coaster for 2025 based on things seen by https://www.youtube.com/@AmusementInsiders

He thinks it's an Intamin and it looks like it launches through Wonder Mountain

Kinda excited to see the construction since it looks like they are going to be doing a lot of work during the Spring/Summer

Yeah I've been keeping up with Brendon's predictions for a while (Premier rides, what?). I know Wonderland's major show is all B&Ms but they're reliable and high capacity. I get they need a good thrill coaster, and the rumours of Cedar Fair execs riding Velocicoaster and saying "let's buy a couple of these" (with Wonder Mountain providing a good opportunity for some similar rock-work/head-choppers) but I can't wait for 15 minutes of downtime every other hour. lol

There's also the red herring of CF not working with Intamin since 2014, even getting Zamperla to refurb Top Thrill instead to what looks like an excellent result.

Well from some videos I'm seeing for the Studio Tour, seems something will finally be done about the old Fast and the Furious: Extreme Close Up section (not to be confused with Supercharged) that will open next year. It looks like it will be Jurassic World themed.

Could expect that to close the moment the new coaster opens. Though I imagine this new section of the tour that is barely being constructed will likely take priority first. Gotta have something in the event one major section of the tour closes.

Also it looks like the city of Anaheim, CA has approved the Disneyland expansion.

View: https://youtu.be/Aauq38Lxjso?si=uZTIu5JBd-twt7rU

Though towards the end of the video, it's made clear this is an initial approval. There is still a procedural vote to take place.

Going back to WDW for the first time since 2019 this Saturday to DHS and could use some pointers on my plan of attack. I know I need to grab Genie+ at midnight on Friday and then book our first lightning lane at 7am, which I assume should be Slinky (ideally around 10/10:30 to allow for a couple walk ons at park open) since Rise is an individual lightning lane. Does the Hagrid trick of waiting to ride it with a significantly lower wait around lunchtime (11:30-12:30ish) work for Rise, or is it going to be slammed all day unless I grab an individual LL? Also, since invidiual LLs go on sale at park open (9am) instead of 7am, can you hold one of those and a regular LL at the same time? I know Saturday should be fairly busy, but hoping that rope dropping with an optimal LL strat should eliminate long waits in most cases. I also know I can immediately grab another LL after redeeming the previous one.

Slinky is probably the first LL you should go for. Rise is really unpredictable in my experience when it will be up or down. You can try and head there first, but no idea if it's actually running or not. For the best chance at a ride, I'd get an ILL for as early in the day as possible, because if it still isn't running or is down during the that time they will change your return time to any time for the rest of the day. And yeah, you can hold ILLs and regular LLs at the same time.

The only other thing I'd add is that you can't get a 2nd Genie+ LL until 2 hours after regular park opening. For the rest of the day though your next is immediately after use. I recently learned this is actually different in Disneyland (unless it is a recent change on both coasts.)

Had a star filled day yesterday at Disneyland. We primarily extended our trip to meet some artists (Joey Chou and Jerrod Maruyama) that were showcased. But we ended up seeing Josh D'Amaro as we passed him in downtown Disney. We ended up bumping into him multiple times through the day. To the point we joked that he was following us. Turns out we share some favorite rides across the two parks.

We got to talking about recently announced changes to their DAS system and he reassured us about what they are focusing on going forward (which is what guest services told us prior to this.) He understands the communities concerns and he admitted that they have bungled the messaging. He went on to talk about what he feels the changes encompass and after hearing it straight from the horses mouth I am more confident about the changes. It should simplify the process and clear up any abusers.

Getting to talk even for a few minutes (he stayed in line with regular guests at each ride we saw him at) with him again you can see he has a passion for the parks that is sorely missing from those on the board and the previous CEO. I share in his enthusiasm a brighter future and hope that he's able to accomplish his goals in the parks.

But I did have to ask him one question. Why so many Frozen lands?! To which he said that I should ask the board why they pushed for it so hard. He wants to make new experiences and like myself wants unique attractions and experiences for guests to enjoy rather than copying one ride across multiple parks. He like me thinks that it's a draw for other parks across the globe and wants to focus more on those unique opportunities. He is a dreamer in one of the truest senses and I think he'll make one heck of a CEO someday.

Some thoughts on the Disneyland/DCA leg of our trip now that I'm back in front of a real keyboard. Last time we were there was ~fall 2012 and so there were quite a few different/new things on the DCA side. Last time Carsland was still under construction, Bugs Life area still there, Tower of Terror still the original, and main entrance area was mostly walls. DL less changes, I think Mickey RRW and Star Wars land being the main differences, but since we are familiar with WDW's versions they aren't really new to us.

- We stayed at the Tropicana which was really close to the entrance and relatively nice for the motel-style place that it was. Much better than the place we stayed last year, which I think is called Grand Legacy and has been remodeled some since then.

- We had Genie+, which I'd say is much more useful here, though there are benefits and tradeoffs compared to WDW. Not sure how much it was (or most of anything related to this trip, as most of it was planned by my partner) but specifically I really like reservations not starting until you are in the park and not having the 7am craziness like you do at WDW. Also not having the 2-hour period at the start of the day that you can't make more reservations is nice. Not being able to use it more than once per ride is a bit of a downer, though there is enough to use it on that I never felt too restricted by it. The pace of return times advancing was pretty reasonable, only a handful of attractions would run out over the course of the day. WDW has most of the ones you would want/need gone halfway through the day.

- Disneyland wise, most of it was the same as our last time there, and we didn't venture into Star Wars land as I rather focus on unique stuff and I'm kinda sick of it from WDW. Still really like Jungle Cruise here (though I miss the queue audio from the florida version), they have piranhas and shoot guns. Indy is a huge improvement over Dinosaur's best day even, though our jeep-mates were insufferable. My opinion on Pirates improved a lot though I still think I prefer WDW's pacing. Also the cannons seem to work better in Florida. Haunted Mansion was closed. Pooh is marginally better in Florida though being a walk on in DL helps a lot. Big Thunder's effects on the final lift are really cool compared to the nothing burger we have. We caught the fireworks while we were on it and that was amazing. Fantasyland wise, all the dark rides were great, I really miss Toad and Snow White. Didn't get on Pan, line is still rediculous in DL (though not nearly as rediculous). Rode Casey Jr for the first time and that was fun. Rodger Rabbit wasn't as good as I remember, Small World, despite the obviously better facade I still prefer the WDW version, Matterhorn was impossible to get onto but somehow we managed to do both sides. Nemo subs are my favorite thing, driving those would be my dream job. Tomorrowland is a mess, though Buzz is still so much better thanks to the way the targets/laser guns work. Space Mountain was Star Wars themed and the first time I rode it that way. An improvement over vanilla from what I remember, though still prefer the WDW ride.

- DCA we had a ton of fun in this time. Radiator Springs is gorgeous and I love everything about it. The Incredibles theming on the California Screamin' work really well. The Avengers area was not the most impressive thing if I'm being honest, though I enjoyed the Spiderman ride more than I thought, and the Pym restaurant was good. ToT/Guardians wasn't that great outside of Rocket animatronic. But if you had to change up one of the tower rides this one was the one to do it to. The Monsters Inc ride I still love (especially the conspiracy theorist monster is hilarious) though the line was horrible this trip. We went to the dessert party for World of Color, which is the only way to do it. I liked the Marvel/Star Wars sections.

- More generally - crowds to me seemed mid-ish, for us on a Friday and Saturday. Definitely a stark contrast to Universal though not horrible. Having Genie+ helped a lot. I'd still say we could use a 3rd day to clean up loose ends or re-ride things we liked. Ride up-time got pretty frustrating though. Matterhorn was down the majority of the first day and when it came back up in the afternoon they weren't allowing any LL access. Waited in a long line to get on it that evening. Same for Incredicoaster - down all day and then no LL after. Second day, we planned to use LL for Incredicoaster since it did open on time and get in RSR standby, but then it wasn't open on time. So it inherited that from Test Track too :P Monorail died on us and they cleared the station, Goofy coaster was down a decent while.

- Food we kinda struggled with though I imagine a lot of that was us not being familiar with everything. So much of what we had the first day at DL involved hot dogs or pizza in some way. DCA was much better. Lines/wait times for food prep were pretty bad. They did have a "Food and Wine" thing going on but as someone who is a regular of Epcot festivals it seemed hard to do unless that was what you were there for. Really long lines, prices seemed higher for similar portions, stands seemed kinda scattered around. Epcot you kinda know entering in World Showcase you can focus on eating/drinking and walking around whereas in DCA I was too preoccupied with rides/lines to really partake in the festival stuff. I'm sure if you are more familiar/local though it is different. The Black Tap burger place in Downtown Disney was great though. Also didn't end up at Ihop or Denny's this time so that is a massive improvement too :P

- Next time down will be much sooner, will be back in September for the Halloween Marathon weekend. I think we will try go via John Wayne as 7am flights out of LAX are no fun.

It sucks that so many Fantasyland rides (maybe all of them, I forget) don't work with Genie+ in Disneyland.
I assume it's because everything is crammed in such a tight space that they can't fit in an extra lightning lane, but it's still a bummer.

I went last week and really wanted to finally do the Pan ride, but yet again it never had a wait shorter than 50 minutes the whole time I was there.

Nah, I absolutely see the Fantasyland rides not having Genie+ as a huge positive. Really, that DL has a lot of rides outside that system is much better than WDW which tries to put anything/everything on there. Less rides having merge points clog up line progression is better IMO.

Pan is just sort of an outlier. If it had Genie+ the standby time would be just as bad as Florida's.

leaks have surfaced on fantasy springs. a pov of most of the frozen ride is out there if you search for it. looks pretty expansive with a bunch of animatronics. i
