I'm glad they are trying something different but turn based is usually not for me. This went from instant buy to wait and see.

No matter who they are or how well fleshed out they are, Yakuza isn't a Persona game. They're not about going to school together or going off on dungeon-delving expeditions. It'd be extremely odd for grown-ass-adults to go everywhere together. You don't see anything odd about that possibility at all? A game in the Yakuza franchise where you freeroam doing sub stories, and you have a pack of your buds in tow just following around like it's Final Fantasy 8 or something?

if they just melt out of the alleyways when you enter into battle i'm fine with that lol. i mean, jeeze, just majima out of a trash can, whatever

Initial shock aside, I'm still willing to give it a try.
Dragon Quest XI is my goty from last year so I don't hate turn-based, I just actually liked Yakuza's brawler combat so its weird to see it gone.

No offense intended at all, but you're the one who needs to understand that people are naturally going to be concerned about gigantic changes that completely alter the gameplay in one of the industry's last-remaining brawler series. I love turn-based, party-based JRPGs, but those gameplay videos fill me with unease. This is basically the death of a genre, and a very odd move for a series with an impeccable track record.

I'm still super excited for the game, but until I see reviews/have the game in my hands, it's hard not to worry that one of the best things in gaming is going to implode due to this move.
He showed interest in giving a continuation to Judgment. Im pretty sure they will make more brawlers. For the main Yakuza series this was a big bold move and i love it, i love turn based RPGs and wished there was much more as almost all turn based JRPGs are now action RPGs. So very excited for this news. The story, judging by the trailer will probably be the same strong narrative but with more comedy in it. Only thing left to see are the kind of minigames they will put in this new saga.

The only real bad move is calling it Yakuza 7. Shin Yakuza would be a good name to be more easy to indentify a new chapter in the Yakuza series.

This is a video game series where you can hire a chicken to manage your real estate company. The chicken is better than some of the humans you can assign to that position.

This isn't an argument based on "realism." It's an argument that the Yakuza series shines by having personal, intimate encounters with people in the world, and that it'd shit all of that up by having a big pack of people running around with you all the time. The chicken doesn't follow you everywhere, show up in every scene, and pop out from your pocket while you're at the love hotel with a hostess.

Try for a second to see past your hype for this game turning into your favorite genre.

Woah, switching to turn based seems crazy! See how it goes. I've only played Yakuza 0 but the combat was just okay (one of the weaker aspects of the game) so I'm open minded.

I mean, the idea of gangsters rolling together is pretty prevalent in gang culture and especially goofy Yakuza movies.

This announcement revealed a certain weird and unjustified preconception I had.
So, we had turn based serious turn real time left and right and that was like "well, duh, expected at this point".

But doing the opposite feels so weird, almost alien like "is this even possible?", even though why shouldn't it be? LIke if turn based games can turn action, why can't opposite happen? But I guess this is so rare, it seems utterly baffling and unheard to me.

Nice trailer. But turn based???

I applaud them for trying something new, but I don't know how I feel about that. If they include a party member that can do DDTs, suplexes or powerbombs as an attack, I'll be onboard.

Yes, I'm sure that the series' trademark substories with protagonists helping little boys buy porn mags, rescuing kittens, dating hostesses and helping fathers make amends to daughters wouldn't be ruined by that at all.

Right, and at the rate they put out games it won't be that long until the next one if this game is a dud.
Japanese release dates-
-Ishin! Feb. 2104
-Yakuza 0 March 2015
-Kiwami January 2016
-Yakuza 6 December 2016
-Kiwami 2 December 2017
-Fist of the North Star March 2018
-Judgment December 2018
-Yakuza 7 January 2020

(That's not even including the PS4 ports of 3, 4 & 5)

The longest they've gone this generation is 13 months between titles.

Good point honestly, especially from Yakuza of all franchises

for a sec i thought the full game is only turn based, but i think its just a mode like the gang fights? I dont hate turn based so i dont mind but i doubt they'd change it so radically for the whole game

edit: Just saw the quote that it IS the full game, will still buy.

Yakuza not being based in Kamurocho but in the new city Yokohama (edit: Isezakicho?) is also very interesting.

Sounds exciting to explore, since the Yakuza team are really good with the attention to detail they put towards the city part of the game.

The whole fighting aspect of the game is turn-based now, there's no beat-em up action anymore.

turn based combat?!

Hand to hand combat has always been my least favorite part of any Yakuza game. The special moves get old after seeing them for the 10000th time in multiple games.

Yakuza + in a new city + turned based combat = day one without even looking at reviews and impressions

you know what i'll give it a try. why not. judgement wasn't my favorite combat in the "series" by any means so maybe something new is just what they need.

Turn Based combat is a big OOF to me. And I'm not feeling the protag, either. Was hoping for more Shin out of Shin Yakuza.

After defeating the supposed final boss you travel to Kamurocho to rid it from the Omi Alliance invasion and finally receive the title of Kiryu, cue the main theme and credits roll.

Turn base?

I'm in.

I'm personally not a fan of the action gameplay. Yakuza 0 was a bit of a drag for me, enjoyed the writing/story but I got bored when it came to actually fighting.

I mean this is a new chapter/beginning for Yakuza, new protagonist, new start, things are going to different, nothing wrong with changing things up after so many years.
