This is incredible. Day one! Also the UI reminds me of upcoming JRPG Trails of Cold Steel III so I'm very excited for Yakuza 7.

As long as there's a gripping story (with some silly melodrama) and funny/fun substories/minigames, I can live with a turn-based combat system.

Such an big change for this series is really making it hard to process that this is what the game is about now.

I just hope the more I see of it in the future, it'll warm me up to it but right now... I'm just feeling really down.

Still happy for those who want turn base.

Action RPGs are so last gen, I'm glad we're finally moving away from such archaic nonsense.

People need to understand that this isn't just another Yakuza game. At the press conference, Nagoshi describes this game as a 'watershed' moment for the entire series. It only feels natural that they'd go for a big risk like this, it's unprecedented in the 14 or so years the series has existed. The series' sales have been declining ever since the release of 5 way back in 2012, it doesn't surprise me they'd go for something this ballsy to renew interest.
Why name it Yakuza 7 then? That'll turn off people thinking they have to play the previous 6 games.
Personally that was my problem too. Yakuza 0 is what finally got me into the series since it was an entry point. You probably don't need to play the previous games for Yakuza 7 too but the name doesn't really make that obvious.

I'm totally down with the new combat system. New protag, new city, new story, let's do it.

The brawling system is great but we don't need every single game to have the same system. I know Yakuza fans are used to recycled material but come on, be open to change.

My god, Nagoshi has got to have the biggest balls to do something like this, giant risk but giant reward if it's good

sounds awesome, I am in. Glad its in a new location, I am a bit fatigued of Kamarucho. In fact after playing 0, 1, 6, and Judgement I'm taking a break from starting 2 because I am kinda tired of the same location.

If they release this mid 2020 that gives plenty of time to finish up 2, 3, 4, 5 and be ready for 7. Yosh!!

The amount of fights in traditional Yakuza games just while roaming the streets are huge in number, but they're fine because you can plow through them quickly with a few punches and a combo etc.

If you keep the number of fights the same but make it turn based, it's gonna be a much slower slog imo.
yeah a bit worrieda bout this, but hopefully given that they're, well, game designers, they account for this kinda thing.

No offense intended at all, but you're the one who needs to understand that people are naturally going to be concerned about gigantic changes that completely alter the gameplay in one of the industry's last-remaining brawler series. I love turn-based, party-based JRPGs, but those gameplay videos fill me with unease. This is basically the death of a genre, and a very odd move for a series with an impeccable track record.

I'm still super excited for the game, but until I see reviews/have the game in my hands, it's hard not to worry that one of the best things in gaming is going to implode due to this move.

I really can't believe that the combat system is turn based now. I think it's kind of cool if true but there's no way

If it really is 100% turn based than I'm going to be really worried. Personally I find more turn based combat systems to be misses than hits. Hopefully it's more like Persona than any other JRPG because I loved the combat in P5 and never got sick of it even after 100 hours. It's going to really, really suck if I can't find enjoyment in the latest entry to one of my favourite video game series.

I've never played a Yakuza game before, is the combat typically one of the games strengths or is it just kinda there? I never hear it brought up when people talk about good combat systems. If wasn't that great anyway why not try something new?
I'm a big fan of the franchise, but nah, combat was nothing special.
Fighting 1x1 was ok, but with multiple enemies the combat system struggled.
If felt nice, there was weight to the punches, but it was way floaty and unresponsive.

After 6 mainline games with the same combat structure, I welcome the new JRPG elements.

Most of the people play Yakuza not because of the combat, so I hope that it pays off for them

I'm not even a fan of turn-based stuff but I'm willing to give this a shot. RGG Studio realize this is a big risk to take and if it doesn't work out, they'll probably go back to the old formula. I do think doing this with a mainline title is very ballsy but eh... this is the hole they wanna dig themselves into, I'd like to see what comes out of all this.

this is surely not turn based for the whole game, either you can switch between normal combat/turn based or it is for a minigame...there is for sure something lost in translation
well i'm reading the official site for yakuza 7 right now
the description basically says they're combining fighting action and command rpg to make a system they call "live command rpg battle"

It's interesting for sure, but I still think it was mistake to call this Yakuza 7 instead of labeling it as a new Yakuza series. There's a lot of expectations for numbered series built on previous entries, and the most obvious one should be the genre.
Final Fantasy did the opposite, switching from turn based to an action game. Why can't Yakuza do the inverse of that?

I love turn-based games so I'm completely down.

But just as Yakuza is finally starting to gain momentum in the West? I'm suddenly deathly afraid of the West ignoring this like Dragon Quest and then we go back to the Japan-only days for Yakuza =[

Alternatively, if it doesn't work out, maybe SEGA decides to can the series. I'm down for change, but this seems like so much change that it'll make it difficult to determine which parts people liked/disliked about the new style.

Whether I like this change or not (I don't think I do), I am fascinated by the balls on Sega. There's no other boardroom in the world where people would have agreed to do this with a series that FINALLY found international success. I am guessing Nagoshi slammed his fist down on the table for this one.

It's such an interesting thing to do.

Hey I love the series and the combat, but if they want to change it up for a game that's cool. I liked Dead Souls even with the janky gun combat. If this is a failure they can always go back for the next game in a couple of years.

I don't play turn based games or JRPG's so if this is the main combat I'm definitely out sadly...
