Why name it Yakuza 7 then? That'll turn off people thinking they have to play the previous 6 games.Reposting for new page
People need to understand that this isn't just another Yakuza game. At the press conference, Nagoshi describes this game as a 'watershed' moment for the entire series. It only feels natural that they'd go for a big risk like this, it's unprecedented in the 14 or so years the series has existed. The series' sales have been declining ever since the release of 5 way back in 2012, it doesn't surprise me they'd go for something this ballsy to renew interest.
yeah a bit worrieda bout this, but hopefully given that they're, well, game designers, they account for this kinda thing. The amount of fights in traditional Yakuza games just while roaming the streets are huge in number, but they're fine because you can plow through them quickly with a few punches and a combo etc.
If you keep the number of fights the same but make it turn based, it's gonna be a much slower slog imo.

TGS is in like 2 weeks, we'll see it there ;)
Hopefully man! I really want to love it, I really do. But now for the first time since forever as an fan of the series I'm just stumped...
I'm a big fan of the franchise, but nah, combat was nothing special.I've never played a Yakuza game before, is the combat typically one of the games strengths or is it just kinda there? I never hear it brought up when people talk about good combat systems. If wasn't that great anyway why not try something new?
No offense intended at all, but you're the one who needs to understand that people are naturally going to be concerned about gigantic changes that completely alter the gameplay in one of the industry's last-remaining brawler series. I love turn-based, party-based JRPGs, but those gameplay videos fill me with unease. This is basically the death of a genre, and a very odd move for a series with an impeccable track record.
I'm still super excited for the game, but until I see reviews/have the game in my hands, it's hard not to worry that one of the best things in gaming is going to implode due to this move.
I'm not even a fan of turn-based stuff but I'm willing to give this a shot. RGG Studio realize this is a big risk to take and if it doesn't work out, they'll probably go back to the old formula. I do think doing this with a mainline title is very ballsy but eh... this is the hole they wanna dig themselves into, I'd like to see what comes out of all this. Why name it Yakuza 7 then? Personally that was my problem too. Yakuza 0 is what finally got me into the series since it was an entry point. You probably don't need to play the previous games for Yakuza 7 too but the name doesn't really make that obvious.
See I really like the idea of this. Your no longer one dude fighting alone, you have a team/gang of your own helping you fight.
well i'm reading the official site for yakuza 7 right nowthis is surely not turn based for the whole game, either you can switch between normal combat/turn based or it is for a minigame...there is for sure something lost in translation
Final Fantasy did the opposite, switching from turn based to an action game. Why can't Yakuza do the inverse of that? It's interesting for sure, but I still think it was mistake to call this Yakuza 7 instead of labeling it as a new Yakuza series. There's a lot of expectations for numbered series built on previous entries, and the most obvious one should be the genre.
^^^^
But are they weirdos? They could be fleshed out characters important to the story. For a series that generally has such a personal, intimate nature, the idea of having a pack of weirdos follow you everywhere is something that I find very off-putting.
well i'm reading the official site for yakuza 7 right now
the description basically says they're combining fighting action and command rpg to make a system they call "live command rpg battle"

not comparable as beat em ups are even less common than turned based rpgsFinal Fantasy did the opposite, switching from turn based to an action game. Why can't Yakuza do the inverse of that?
