Mr. Mullenweg said his company intends to maintain the existing policy that bans adult content. He said he has long been a Tumblr user and sees the site as complementary to WordPress.com. "It's just fun," he said of Tumblr. "We're not going to change any of that."

Great strategy, dumbfuck.

Tumblr is absolutely AWFUL for navigating on a desktop or anything but the Tumblr app, and even then it's still pretty awful. They really destroyed that site.

I got banned/restricted from Tumblr for posting a pic in my underwear with nothing visible because it got reposted by another blog so fuck Tumblr, really.

No way. I call bullshit.

Tumblr used to be one of the biggest sites for artists, hobby photographers, and women fandoms but people started migrating to twitter when Yahoo started to drop the ball on getting rid of porn bots and never fixing the search and discover-ability. Verizon was the final nail in the coffin with the "porn" ban which affected a massive amount of art with the slightest bit of skin showing and their heavy hand with DCMAs. Funny thing is that still didn't fucking fix the porn bot problem and the search engine is still fucking terrible. They also still have that default setting which doesn't automatically show all posts on your dash and uses some bad algorithm to just grab trending stuff that you follow which is insanely stupid. Most people don't even know you can turn it off.

If Tumblr ends up dead for good I'll pretty much be done with any kind of social media outside of Era as twitter is a fucking cesspool and is terrible for blogging/art.

I still use and run a bunch of blogs on Tumblr. As a blogging platform, with the queues and everything, it was and still is the easiest platform to play with.

It's just so easy to set up a site with a queue and just let it go and post stuff. I do hope it sticks around - the reblogging aspect of it all works so well. It's also very easy using ifttt.com to repost everything to twitter when I want it to.

Don't mess with someone's porn. I read an article saying Tumblr traffic had a giant drop after they banned porn, and it has just kept dropping at a slower rate since then, great business strategy guys to "not change anything"

less than 3 million? Kind of pathetic but I guess I can believe it. I haven't actually heard anything about Tumblr in aaaages, it was left behind by the other major social media sites.

Also, I'll never forgive them for deleting the account of Siri (the pornstar). Lots of interesting shit on there about her life. She never started a similar project again.

I was only ever into the tumblr for the long joke threads but I think that's mainly because I think it sucked as a general-purpose content aggregator.

No reversal of porn ban, Tumblr is still dead. What's the point of Tumblr if they want to maintain this dumb ban that nobody likes. I'm sick of these puritan tech companies.

Democratizing publishing, except if you want to publish titties!

It's not really the tech companies, it's the payment processors. Very few card-payment backends want to touch porn, in part because of legal liability and also because of the tendency for people to try to back out of purchases.

And the thing is... there's still a whole lot of porn on tumblr. It really seems they've given up on any moderation the past 6 months.

Porn on tumblr was a double edged sword anyway. You could easily find content to your taste, but it was nearly impossible to determine the original source of anything.

This is Bebo all over again. AOL bought it for a stupid $850 million and had to sell it off for like... $1-2 mil?

for $3M, someone could buy Tumblr, restore the old rules and resell it for a healthy profit

Literally all anyone needs to do- restore the NSFW, have strong moderation to remove the illegal content and pornbots, and improve the user experience then boom we have a winner, even supposedly smart entrepreneurs have trouble thinking logically though

Yeah, Tumblr is worse off without adult content (read: not just porn). But I still use it. Still the best place to go for that post-LiveJournal fandom experience that isn't Twitter.

Still, I'll be interested to see if/how they integrate some of Tumblr's community/sharing/rebloging features into WordPress. Even in its neutered state, Tumblr still blows WordPress out of the water in this regard.

I wonder if there is any data on traffic to tumblr after the adult content ban? I seriously doubt it has improved.

Reminder that Marc Cuban is only relevant cause Yahoo bought his shitty website for a load of money.

Interesting. Have no idea what's in this for Automattic.

Also $3m is hilariously low. Imagine Tumblr, 5 or 10 years ago, being sold for $3m.

tumblr was my go-to for feet pics of specific genre. no other place compares

for $3M, they might as well shutter the site and abandon the name. but that's probably why they're still selling it: so they can pocket the cash, as $3M wouldn't even be noticeable

Serious question: if you bring back the porn, where's the money going to come from? I thought that was the problem, advertisers didn't want to advertise if there was risk of porn, and you couldn't even integrate with search if you didn't know what was adult and what wasn't.

That might have been part of it, but the bigger problem was the Tumblr app getting booted off the Apple and Google app stores.

To be fair, this was kind of deserved. Tumblr had very little, if any moderation for years, and apparently some very untoward content (read: child pornography) had made its way to the darkest corners of the site. But rather than institute new moderation policies (which, if I remember correctly, they DID do for a brief period just to get back on the app stores), Yahoo opted to just ban adult content altogether.
