Verizon Communications Inc. VZ -0.20% has agreed to sell its blogging website Tumblr to the owner of popular online-publishing tool WordPress, unloading for a nominal amount a site that once fetched a purchase price of more than $1 billion.

Automattic Inc. will buy Tumblr for an undisclosed sum and take on about 200 staffers, the companies said. Tumblr is a free service that hosts millions of blogs where users can upload photos, music and art, but it has been dwarfed by Facebook , Reddit and other services.

The Tumblr acquisition is the largest ever in terms of price and head count for Automattic, the company's Chief Executive Matt Mullenweg said in an interview. The San Francisco company has a stable of brands focused on online publishing, including longform site Longreads, comment-filtering service Akismet, and avatar-managing service Gravatar.

Yahoo had paid about $1.1 billion for Tumblr in 2013 when it was one of several fast-growing internet startups. Tumblr failed to generate meaningful revenue for Yahoo, prompting the company to write down the site's value by $230 million in 2016.
A decision last year by Verizon to ban adult content on Tumblr alienated some users.

Mr. Mullenweg said his company intends to maintain the existing policy that bans adult content. He said he has long been a Tumblr user and sees the site as complementary to WordPress.com. "It's just fun," he said of Tumblr. "We're not going to change any of that."

End of an era.

Probably better off under WordPress than they are now tbh. Hopefully they don't force their Gravatar bullshit on them though.

I used to use it a shit ton for non-porn purposes, but then Yahoo bought it and it went so downhill so fast.

I picked it back up about a year ago, and they ruined it with that stupid no adult content.

Ah come on! I just want to see German girls pee on each other.

Is that too much to ask, Tumblr?!

Should just delete the site if that's his position because he's straight up never going to improve on the site. It's hot garbage with the countless reposts from instagram and reddit.

I had a public tumblr for years with a decent amount of followers and all I did was post video game content but it was the porn that actually helped me come to terms with some serious body issues I had/have and helped me find people who lead me to learn that maybe I wasn't as disgusting to look at as I thought I was.

I'm not saying I'm cured but I know for a fact that it helped me and I'm sure it helps a lot of other people as well. And I'm also sure people just used it for purely sexual reasons. but now there's no reason to go to Tumblr, at least for me. I don't need video game gifs without the hot guys to look at - I can just get that here. (That sounds mean but I just mean there's (hopefully) no random porn coming up on my screen while on ERA lol)

It's completely laughable how Tumblr is treated. You complete destroy the fan base with an outrageous decision and wonder why it doesn't have success, sell it off to another company who, instead of going back to what made it popular in the first place, continues to fuck over the fan base. Astonishing, truely astonishing.

Also, that wasn't going to be the final total, Verizon was going to pay Yahoo more to acquire them but lowered the price due to the Yahoo data breaches:

After the disclosure of two massive data breaches last year, today Yahoo and Verizon finally confirmed new terms for the sale of Yahoo to Verizon: Verizon will pay $350 million less than originally planned, working out to a price of $4.48 billion to acquire Yahoo.

The two have also agreed to share legal and regulatory liabilities after two massive data breaches at Yahoo, one estimated to cover around 500 million accounts revealed in September 2016, and another disclosed in December 2016 affecting over 1 billion accounts. TechCrunch has also confirmed that any further Yahoo liability going forward will be assumed by Altaba, the newly branded holding company that will oversee the Yahoo stake in Alibaba after the sale of the rest of the assets to Verizon.

The deal is now expected to close in Q2 2017, the two companies said. Verizon also owns AOL, which owns TechCrunch.

tumblr was valueless well before the porn ban, one of the reasons they even introduced the porn ban was so they could get more quote-unquote respectable ads
(it did not work)

If only they started putting relevant ads on the site to entice users to click versus all the ads I see on there aimed at the 40+ crowd.

And/or didn't run off the (by far) largest part of their user base? Honestly, Tumblr with no porn had no point, and it died the minute they removed that content. They could have found some way to monetize the site, but it's a lot harder when the bulk of your users disappear all at once.

Right?

I don't know the story behind Yahoo's acquisition, but it seems like Yahoo! was almost too big of a company to run Tumblr and gave the platform a bit too much autonomy.

It seems like there would be a hundred and one ways to monetize a long-form content website without effecting its users or its content. Like was Yahoo or Verizon even serving its own ads if people chose to monetize (the YouTube model)?

Oh I feel ya I used to run a trans porn blog and I know for a fact that was what started my transition. It's nothing more then me posting porn, and the people I had talked too which showed me how much I was in the closet.

The site legitimately has /r/Tumblr going for it and some small memes.

That was a post-Verizon move, wasn't it? And, honestly, that was probably done in an effort to make it look more attractive to prospective buyers.

Yahoo before Verizon barely did anything with the platform.

That's awesome!

Back when I discovered Tumblr... 2012? 2011? My neck of the woods was different and the "only gay men who were attractive" were skinny/hairless/buff dudes and, you know, age had started its assault on my metabolism and that wasn't me anymore. Now, people can be attracted to that body type and good for them! but it helped me feel like I could hate myself just a little bit less because OTHER GUYS WANTED TO DO ME and quite honestly that's empowering as fuck.

Sorry for the TMI, ERA but Tumblr fucked up and continues to fuck up.

No reversal of porn ban, Tumblr is still dead. What's the point of Tumblr if they want to maintain this dumb ban that nobody likes. I'm sick of these puritan tech companies.

Hello Tumblr 👋

Today, Tumblr's owner, Verizon Media, announced that Automattic plans to acquire Tumblr. Automattic is the technology company behind products such as WordPress.com, WooCommerce, Jetpack, and Simplenote—products that help connect creators, businesses, and publishers to communities around the world.

We couldn't be more excited to be joining a team that has a similar mission. Many of you know WordPress.com, Automattic's flagship product. WordPress.com and Tumblr were both early pioneers among blogging platforms.

Automattic shares our vision to build passionate communities around shared interests and to democratize publishing so that anyone with a story can tell it, especially when they come from under-heard voices and marginalized communities.

We look forward to continuing to create products that empower your self-expression and sense of community and that build a better, more inclusive internet.

We're excited for our future together!

There isn't one that's really taken off unfortunately. All the fandoms and fanart creators migrated to Twitter which still allows NSFW. Problem is Twitter is not really designed to be an art platform.

And it sucks for that. Twitter allows creators to gain massive followings, which is great, but unless you are highly prolific and highly productive it can be hard. It also sucks as a platform or gallery space for artists to showcase their work. As a fan, it's less than ideal. Twitter wasn't designed for art the way Tumblr was, which in my experience, was a much better platform. Too bad toxic communities and shitty management ruined it.

Yahoo was struggling to remain relevant as the others around them surged past. Marissa Meyer is ridiculed for what she did but she was making any attempts to acquihire brands and talent to help reshape yahoo. Much like Instagram and twitter, tumblr was a platform that had a strong user base for ads but not a clear way to how. Problem was they never figured it out and Verizon didn't event want the baggage.

Nearly every poster I know left Tumblr for Twitter or a dedicated creator site.
