I can't believe I allowed myself to think 1440p would be a no-brainer on a "next-gen" console like the PS5.
Pretty embarassing at this point. To only be able to output at 2160p or drop way down to 1080p is terrible. 1440p is the sweet spot, especially with all the HDMI 2.0 TVs with native 1440p @120Hz support.
Not to be a conspiracy theorist, but I do wonder if any of this has to do with the fact that Sony is selling "PS5 ready" 4k TVs, and they don't sell computer monitors (afaik?)
Bumping this to say that I've heard, off the record, that PS5 does *not* support 1440p resolution. The person in question had their PS5 hooked up to a 1080p display, and the available resolutions were 720p, 1080i, 1080p, and 2160p. 2160p was greyed out and unavailable, implying that 1440p isn't supported at all.
Unless Sony says otherwise, the dream is dead.

It's a console... designed for TVs. Not really meant for monitors with different resolutions, otherwise it'll piss off all those super-extra-wide resolution people. Games would then have to worry about being coded for 1080p, 4K, 2K and resolution scaling. Then someone will say "Will it support my ultra-wide monitor?".
So stick with 1080p or 4K. No TV is sold as a 1440p TV (yes, they may SUPPORT it, but it is either 1080p or 4K) - so there is no need to make the PS5 utilise it.

Gaming on a 1440p is not really "next-gen" though; next-gen is all about 4K 120FPS HDR or even 8K30 with some AI upscaling.
So if true, does this mean games can't aim for a 1440p res? Or does it mean they can do that but the PS5 will always upscale to 4K output?

A 60hz one :(Still waiting on confirmation to buy a monitor. Looks like I'll be getting a 4K one then.

Sony's ongoing commitment to NOT natively support 1440p is truly mind boggling to me.
Imagine supporting 720p and 1080i in the year 2020 but not 1440p. FFS.
This sucks so much. 1440p is the sweetspot imo for a 27 inches display and there's plenty of them with great motion handling and input lag in the 400-600 € range that support 120Hz and Freesync over HDMI 2.0.
Now I'll have to wait to Q1 2021 to spend maybe triple that on a 4k HDMI 2.1 monitor for no real IQ or functionality gain. Not cool, Sony.
wait, I thought 1440p output was confirmed? I'm not getting anything 4k anytime soon so this sucks to no end. Almost not interested in it anymore.

Well, yeah, that's part of the problem. Series X/S supports both 1440p and Freesync. But even just support for 1440p120 would be something. There is no freesync on Ps5 as far as we know, so you'd want a 2.1 monitor anyway
Their TVs can do 1440p forced resolution. Not to be a conspiracy theorist, but I do wonder if any of this has to do with the fact that Sony is selling "PS5 ready" 4k TVs, and they don't sell computer monitors (afaik?)
Lol I have a friend who could use that if you are giving it up and US based. For your sake and the others here, I hope they update to include it.I still don't believe it. If it ends up being true I'm legit either sending it back or scalping it.
Well... I hope there is at least a chance of it appearing sometime post-launch :(No Benq had a section which they removed which talked about it and now has a full correction on the site.
