Eric Lempel response here seems to make me think it is a thing we'll see soon
You don't remember the iconic No Man's Sky faceplate?!Must have been for a really brief period of time. I don't remember that at all.
How soon until the controller falls apart. A controller needs to be rigid. having snap on parts to the main shell seems odd. But what do I know.Expected, imo. I think the controller white parts will be swappable too.
It's not the only indication:Being removable doesn't immediately imply they're meant to be swapped out at a consumer level.
I hope so, but we'll probably want to wait for more info.
I wonder if those plates serve some sort of functional purpose or if they can be removed completely to let the console have a more discrete look if you want under a t.v.?
If I eventually get a PS5 before the inevitable slim revision and it is an option, I would totally leave them off. The console looks ridiculous with them. Some people will remove the plates and leave the console "naked"...
Pretty much every component of the PS5 is made in Taiwan (Republic of China):
That is some thick looking plastic in some of those pictures. Hopefully that means build quality will be great
No, you had to remove that part on the OG PS4 to replace the HDD:
It was a thing in Japan though.Interesting but might not mean anything. The glossy side of the original PS4 was really easy to unclip and slide off but nothing came from that.

No, the glossy faceplate was removable to provide easy access to change the HDD. You don't have to go through the tamper seals to replace the hard drives on any PS4 model.Nope it was to get to the screws to open up the case. You had to remove the tamper seal to get it off though.
We don't know how Sony plans to integrate an SSD expansion bay.Wouldn't you be required to take the panel off to put in the replacement SSD when able??
No, the DualSense won't have swappable plates. What about the white parts of the DS? Are they swappable too? They look they aren't welded to the black parts so I think they are swappable too so anyone could customize them at his will.
TSMC would disagree about being in China, but it's a fair point.Pretty much every component of the PS5 is made in China:
- APU Fabrication - TSMC
- Silicon Packaging - ASE Technology
- Silicon Packaging - Siliconeware Precision Industries
- Handle Controller Chips - ZillTek Technology
- Handle Controller Chips - AAC Technologies
- MCUs - Nuvoton Technology
- USB Hub Controllers - Genesys Logic
- USB Hub Controllers - Greatek Electronics
- SSD Controller - Phison Electronics
- SSD Controller Packaging - OSE
