Not sure I get the justification for this. If your friends have no interest in the type of games or the ecosystem the Switch offers then why would you recommend it to them? If they're more into the 3rd person narrative driven cinematic games then why not recommend a PS5? If they're more into the multiplayer/shooter aspect then why not recommend a XSX/XSS? The Switch also doesn't get a lot of the 3rd party games that other platforms get.

There isn't a single platform out there that can fit everybody's preference. What you prefer may not necessarily be what your friends prefer.

See it's actually the opposite for me. Most people I know have a Switch because it's the "party" console, but only own 2-3 games and they almost never use it because they've beaten those games or they're party games and they don't want to buy more. Nintendo gaming is gaming at a premium nowadays, and despite how ridiculous sales numbers are, the vast majority of Switch owners I know aren't willing to buy games for it because theyre just too expensive when they don't drop in price. Though I think it's kinda weird they're happy to spend to much on the console but then never use it...

They're all wondering how I afford to play so many games because they think all gaming is expensive af, but in reality if you have any console that isn't the Switch, games go down to pennies within a year or two of release and it's actually a pretty cheap hobby. Even more so if you go the S model Xbox's with Gamepass. So I actually think having a Switch has made gaming an unfeasible/very exclusive hobby to a lot of the casual gamers I know, and it's a huge shame.

I'd recommend a Series S for most of this and more affordable games through game pass if portability isn't an overriding factor. In which case the NSW is the only option anyway. The S is good value for people who don't want to spend too much but still get lots of quality games. Add to that its sizeable BC library, and it seems hard to argue against it being the more versatile console, I think. Unless, again, portability is a huge deal and money is less of a factor.

A lot of responses in this thread are embarrassing. Switch is not some inferior piece of hardware just because of its graphical horse power and it's perfectly fine to suggest someone to get it as there first or only gaming console. It has just as much validity being suggested as a purchase as a PS4/5 does and as a Xbox console does.

Some really bruised egos in this thread. It's ridiculous.

Switch is a disappointment. You'll play BoTW, FE and SMO and then it collects dust. A Ps4 at this point is massively more attractive, especially given the fact that 90% of the library is dirt cheap. Can't say the same for the Switch games worth a damn. No, playing a hampered version of a 7 year old game is not exciting gtfo with that. I bought a Switch back in mid 2019 and played FETH, LM3, DKTF, Rabbids and XBC (UGHHH I hated this one so much that I haven't touched the system since.) I had already played BOTW and SMO on a friend's Switch prior and man... The system has a handful of heavy hitters but that's pretty much it.

Indies can be played anywhere else so I don't get the selling point of Switch being THE place for Indies. I don't value portability since I'm not taking the thing outta my house under any circumstances. I'd much rather play the plethora of cheap AAA games on any other system. Only reason I haven't flipped my Switch is holding out hope for BoTW2 but that's probably coming out for the successor and I'll be pissed I held on to the thing for nothing.

I like the switch but IMO it is such an expensive console that IMO it is hard to recommend for people to buy it. We are talking about a 300€ console + around 30-70€ per game + online subscription.
Most people already have either a desktop or a laptop. Just shove a 50€ or so GPU into a desktop or just download steam/gamepass into your laptop and play games. Maybe even use stadia/geforce now/xcloud if you have good internet.

IF you aren't a regular gamer why would you "waste" half month (maybe more if you are poor) your of your wage when there is a cheaper alternative?

I love my Switch primarily still because of Nintendo's first party that even though for me personally have been a step down, are still miles above the other 2 platforms.

That being said while third party has obviously improved, it's still nowhere near what PlayStation and to a lesser extent Xbox gets.

Recommending the Switch to your friend to play what was literally a PS3 game on the go (AC: Black Flag, the example the OP used. Calm down I know there's also plenty of newer third party releases) is kinda weird to me personally and definitely not a reason I would recommend it to friends.

The only game on Switch that's a must must play that I'd recommended is BotW. Maybe Smash as well. That's it. I feel like most of the wider appealing 3rd party games are on the other boxes and even then the 1st party games put out by PlayStation or just the exclusives in general are better and speak to a wider audience so its more likely there's something that will suit your tastes.

Would disagree and say it lacks in variety, but has strong games in its genres that matter to the Switch. I see it as a complement to my PS5, something where I'd pick up 2-3 quality Nintendo games each year, but people would be missing a sizable chunk of games if they're even remotely interested in some other genres.

Basically, can't recommend just one console blanketly - gotta take into account what people prefer. Interested in WRPG, sports, or FPS? Then the Switch is probably something you shouldn't get.

I don't get these threads that just read like desperate attempts to "legitimise" the Switch. They've gotten more common since the PS5 and XSX have released.

considering the awful joycon drift all I can say is that you're not a good friend.

When a friends asks you for a recommendation, if the first thing you do isnt asking what games they like and what features they value (like portability) then you're doing it wrong.

It is almost entirely a first party machine for me & could never be my only console.

Running the Series X and will replace my launch Switch with the rumored Pro revision this year.

I'm big on party chat and social gaming as most of my friends live away from me.

Switch doesn't serve me in that respect.

Other examples? you must be able to list them off if they are so common.

There's been a few - one yesterday was a bit strange trying to compare the Japanese sales of Animal Crossing to the sale of PS4 consoles. And predicting how MH: Rise will outsell the PS5 hardware in Japan.

Switch is selling like gangbusters, and clearly has no issues appealing to the masses - these comparisons feel off.

It's a good system for on the go play and it has a few must try titles.

But unless you absolutely need to play on the go it wouldn't be my first recommendation or probably even my second.

So basically rather than take into consideration what kind of games your friends like, or might potentially enjoy, you just act like a human ad? I've recommended the Switch to plenty of my friends or colleagues... after finding out what specifically they're looking for (co-op games, party games etc).

Switch is great and all but PS5 and XSX provide experiences that you cant even imagine on switch because of how underpowered the switch is.

I'd recommend it to people who game a lot in mobile and want to go back to gaming but have less time than before due to their work/study life schedule. Even with the new consoles' quick boot up, its still not as convenient as Switch auto quick resume/sleep function.

I definitely recommend it to my friends who are dads and have lapsed in gaming.

Unless someone is really into Nintendo exclusives and / or values portability then the ps4 or xbox one are both better alternatives, and building a library of games is MUCH cheaper.

"all the interesting indie titles" is a bit of a stretch. Consoles are on their way there, but they still have quite a bit to go before they are the indie platform.

For non-enthusiasts and casuals, yeah absolutely. Small space, portable, easy to bring anywhere even for docked play, lots of party games, etc.

I have a bunch of co-workers who own a console, and their console is the Switch. Nobody owns a PS or XBox console.

I feel this is just going to become a console-warry thread.

Only thing I have to say is that I disagree that Switch has the best version of every major franchise Nintendo has. The only game I can feel confident saying that for is Smash Ultimate and Splatoon (WIth Splatoon primarily being it's mostly an online game and people aren't online on the Wii U now). Otherwise a lot of the new entries have been disappointments to be honest.

Third Parties you will find better performance (and cheaper prices) on other consoles. Indies tend to have workshop support on Steam, or are just included in the Xbox Game Pass at launch for free (Which made the Spiritfarer Shadow Drop from the Nintendo Direct last year awkward when it was just part of the Xbox Game Pass on the same day). They also get put on sale more often if you want to build up a collection, so all all the Switch has is portability, and it doesn't really have that if you remember Laptops exist.

Add the paid online, joycon drift and an online store that needs improvements. I struggle to recommend Switch unless you are deep into Nintendo games specifically, and even then if you are, I then ask if you already played these games on the Wii U.

I'm hoping this changes, but we shall see.

OP just reads like an "I love Nintendo" commercial and is completely blind to what else is out there.

I have a PC as my primary machine, but I also have a PS4 and a Switch. And let me tell you, ignoring the PC and focusing just on the PS4 and the Switch, there's no way in hell I'd ignore the PS4 and just stick with a Switch. There's an amazing amount of high quality exclusives on the PS4 that offer experiences that the Switch could only dream of offering. I like both consoles, but I would never just blindly recommend the Switch to anyone, there's so many great games that are not on the system.

The Switch is also tainted by the shitty, drifting joy-cons and mobster tactics to make you pay for backing up your save games. Nintendo is a pretty garbage company.

PS5 is early days, I don't have much opinion on it yet other than I'm waiting for Sony to improve hardware quality. *BZZZZZZZZTTTT*

Nintendo s lucky to have customers like you. I d recommend it if person wants to play on the go. Otherwise...
Overpriced games.
Overpriced accessories.
Few must 1p hits with bunch of ports
Worst third party library.
Garbage online.
Joycon drift.

Everytime i check offers online i decide against buting it.

it's hard to argue that no console is more versatile and has a richer line-up of games at the moment
Hmm... OK. I think the PS4's expansive library (both exclusives and multiplats) makes the Switch's seem like small potatoes, but everyone's got their preferences.

I can't see myself recommending the Switch to very many people. Being totally fair here, I've only been an owner for a short while and played just two games on the platform (New Horizons and Breath of the Wild), but regardless, it's... not exactly what I would call a good system.
  • The games are jaggy / just plain don't look very good from a technical perspective (but an artistic one, absolutely), and they have some pretty bad framerate issues (Breath of the Wild and Age of Calamity, oof)
  • The actual system and peripherals feel cheaply made with plenty of defects or issues (well-documented Joy-Con drift, Switch warping / bending, the D-pad on the Pro Controller that registers the wrong inputs, etc.)
  • The online is really bad, especially in Animal Crossing, where there's so many restrictions on what you can do in another player's town, that it hardly seems worth it
  • Nintendo refuses to put up a competent Virtual Console offering for people who want to play stuff from the N64 or GBA eras, the user interface is shockingly barebones (no themes, no music, nothing at all like the Wii's home screen with animated icons and music for every channel)
  • Games cost $60 almost always, rarely going down in price, and you have the company pulling bullshit, anti-consumer moves like a limited release window for Super Mario 3D All-Stars
  • Full of archaic systems: friend codes, lack of friend messaging, etc.
  • Very little support for apps, meanwhile other platforms offer Netflix, Disney Plus, and countless others
The list goes on.

Switch is the most family-friendly and versatile console out there so if that's what your friends value then it's a good recommendation.
Also the extremely popular first-party offerings are unique games with little to no alternatives (and the one there are are inferior clones).

Um.... ok?

Strange OP - just lists why the Switch is good but nothing about why they don't recommend the other consoles.

Yes I love my Switch too but I'd recommend all consoles for different reasons.

Switch tends to run 3rd party stuff poorly. I always recommend the console with the better hardware.

This thread is pretty inflammatory, basically begging for a console war.
When half the thread is basically saying the Switch is a bad console, yeah I'd say it's pretty inflammatory.

Better hardware doesn't automatically mean a PS4/Xbox or net-gen consoles are worth it.

I love my switch and play it nearly every day...but I'd ask some questions before recommending someone buy it. If they don't care about portability or Nintendo 1st party titles, they should get one of the next generation systems, in my opinion.

Switch is the console to get because of third party support like Black Flag! How can you deny it.
Third-party on the Switch is more or less a waste of time unless you really need that handheld system portability, which is a feature the other consoles obviously don't offer. Why would I get a worse version of a game that will look and run better, plus cost less, on a PlayStation, Xbox, or PC?

Of course it's going to depend on what interest the person in question has in gaming, but If people who aren't much into games who don't give a shit about 8k 520fps and Raymond tracing ask which console to buy it's not strange to recommend the switch. People in here seem to have a big problem remembering there are non hardcore "gamers" out there. In fact most people who enjoy gaming fall into that category.
