A smile widens on Diego Luna's face when asked about what's ahead for his Star Wars character Cassian Andor in the upcoming Disney+ series Star Wars: Andor. The cheeky grin is a combination of anticipation, excitement and a splash of secrecy regarding the 12-episode project he executive produced and stars in, set to be released in 2022.

"You'll definitely see familiar faces," Luna told Deadline about Andor while promoting the return of his Amazon Prime Video original series Pan Y Circo on October 8. "I can tell you about this project like no other because I can't spoil the ending if you've seen [Stars Wars: Rogue One] already. No matter what I say, I can't ruin the ending."

Here's the thing, the movie didn't necessarily spend a lot of time making Cassian memorable, but the concept of the guy in the seemingly noble rebel alliance who has to be the one to get his hands dirty and kill for this righteous cause is a good premise. (And Diego Luna's a good actor)

Listen to A More Civilized age enough and you'll see that the true value of the prequel era is exploring the factions, politics and non-lightsaber conflicts throughout the galaxy (Though the prequel movies themselves whiff pretty hard on this), and no series seems more primed to capitalize on that untapped potential than a series (theoretically) about the less heroic aspects of the rebel alliance.

I still believe that this exists solely to make the Hawkeye series look less pointless and superfluous by comparison.

Familiar faces? FFS.. Why does Star Wars have to turn every series into a goddamn reunion show? How about showing us something new?

I was really looking forward to this.. liked the original character a lot.

hope this doesn't suck. mandalorian's quality is so random given the constantly changing direction/occasional boring script. you never know what you're going to get with that one.

star wars spy show with nothing jedi related (hopefully) should be fun

He's a cheaper Han Solo? I mean, production wise, he's probably cheaper to hire than any other character they'd try to get?

I won't hold my breath. I'll keep waiting for something more like some of the episodes fo Visions where the umbilical cord to the mainstream Star Wars is cut.

Why are people so quick to mention how much people won't care about this here? Like we get it. If you're not interested then that's fine. You don't have to speak for all of us by saying that no one cares.

Yeah, yeah, no one knows who he is. Tbh, I loved Rogue One most out of the current stock of SW flicks and there's a nonzero chance I'll enjoy this show more than The Mandalorian. (Which wouldn't be too difficult, mind you, since I only kinda like The Mandalorian.)

Y'all need to stop framing this as "the origin story for your favorite Rogue One Rebel agent", and start framing it for what it is:

A spy thriller series set in the Star Wars universe during the height of the Imperial era, created by the dude that wrote the Bourne Trilogy and Michael Clayton.

This shit is gonna be awesome.

for some reason (lot of money prolly) the showrunner behind The Americans is wasting his time with this lmao, so it should be decent.

edit: never mind its a writer from that show.

If this was called Star Wars Underworld, and was about a Rebel spy getting dirty among the Star Wars underbelly of gangs, spies, bounty hunters, informants, and Empire forces, I bet there wouldn't be these "lol no hype" posts

(Oh wait, it is)

I think in theory that sounds good, but the biggest problem with that that I have is that there were characters that also had promise but also were executed well when we saw them that they could've centered a show around.

This reminds me of how so many were like "who the hell wants a young Solo movie", folks argued it and defended it, and then of course it did awful. But they go and give a whole prequel series to an even more obscure and not popular character... yea.... the negativity is warranted.

The only hope the show has is that it's gonna end up being K2SO's show, he's gonna be the baby yoda of the series that everyone will tune in for really.

could've sworn that dude left this show? or maybe I'm thinking of something else.

I mean, a spy show in the Star Wars universe in this specific time period sounds neat. It's much easier to use this dude than to come up with a new character, especially if you got the actor on board. Could use a better title than the character's name though.

Also that movie made a billion. That means lots of people saw it soooo, Disney's obligated to cash in on it.

Well it would help is Disney starts framing it like that. Instead we just get "You'll be seeing some familiar faces instead"

Like wow, here's Gonk Droid. Remember Gonk Droid?

latest

Bet you are super hyped for Gonk Droids return aren't you.

You can replace Gonk Droid with any Star Wars character really, that feels like a lot of what Star Wars had become recently. Bring back the old characters instead of telling cool stories with the new ones.

I'm not speaking only the Sequel Trilogy here, Mandolorian Season 2 fell into the exact same pothole as well.

I don't get all constant "No one cares about this character!" stuff. Marvel gave bland characters like Wanda, Vision, Falcon and Bucky shows and they were really good and became better characters for the most part.

Could go with Dash Rendar show if they want to do a full budget Han series. Or just give me a Dash Rendar and a Kyle Katarn show anyway.

Felt like forever.
They better drop footage on November at the Disney+ Day event.
Also hope this show drops before Kenobi. Watching an Andor show will feel underwhelming after experiencing the Kenobi show imo.

Yeah I don't care about this character right now but I'm totally open to it turning me around on him. Weirder things have happened.

I will say, for a series in part popularized by it's capacity to stimulate the imagination because of it's incredible suggestive world building, Disney has managed to make this franchise and universe feel incredibly small and unimaginative these days.

A universe of millions and everything is anchored around characters from 40 years ago.

I hope it's just some PR pandering, because I'd really like someone with a vision outside of tacking on stories to the core character tree to actually see the light of day.

I can definitely say I'm as excited and interested in him as I was in finding out about Han Solo's origin story.

I'll give it a chance solely because of Diego Luna.
