I re-watched this pretty recently, for the first time in like 15 years, and I gotta say it's still very entertaining.

And yeah, Cameron Diaz was a smoke show.

In terms of 90s Carey vehicles it's definitely up there. It's this, Dumb & Dumber, or Liar Liar for me in terms of the movies that hold up.

Ace Ventura has aged terribly
Ace Ventura has aged like milk left out in the sun. I re-watched Liar Liar recently and tbh I found it pretty bad, like it's this weird mix of wacky Jim Carrey and schmaltzy 90s family entertainment, plus a lot of the humour is pretty lame. Dumb & Dumber also holds up well, but I guess I've always (wrongly?) associated it as more of an adult film, and so less for the 90s kids crowd.

Great movie, if they're gonna try adapting the Mask again they should try to be closer the original comic than this film.

Rewatching Ace Ventura a few years ago (I think) sure was an eye opener.

Great film. Was it an actual mask they had made or was it make up?
A little of both, he had prosthetics put on him (chin, cheeks, bald cap, etc) as well as green make up, I don't think it was a complete mask that covered his whole head. Jim Carrey's face is just elastic as fuck.

To this day I have always wanted a set of comically large white teeth like he wears in The Mask. I've looked everywhere and have never been able to find them. ):

Thing about Dumb & Dumber is though it has plenty of wackiness, the vast majority of the humour isn't slapstick but just dialogue based.

How is the comic? Any good?
It's not bad or anything, but it's very, very different. Way darker.

Stanley Ipkis is just the first character we see using the mask. He's not a sympathetic character at all; he's some asshole who takes violent revenge against everyone who ever bothered him, and after spending a little time with the mask, ends up basically spending all his time in camo gear maintaining his list of people to kill. The mask generally has that effect, bringing out people's latent violent impulses and causing them to get addicted to its use. He ends up being murdered by his own girlfriend, and we go on to other stories.

Big Head, the superpowered being that the mask transforms you into, is less cartoonish. One of his main powers is that they can summon weapons between frames. Characters notice it, but even the ones using the mask don't know where they come from. They're also essentially invincible, but not invulnerable. The mask heals their injuries but doesn't really do anything to avoid or prevent them; they're just constantly left as a bloody mess. An example is that Big Head can stand between two shooters and let them kill each other as their bullets pass through Big Head's body. They're riddled with bulletholes and covered with their own blood, but that doesn't really matter.

I can only assume that this film does not hold up, even as a live-action movie with Tex Avery-style sequences.

Very true. I saw Dumb & Dumber for the first time not that long ago, and it impressed me quite a bit. I've always seen the wackiness emphasized - never the heartfelt performances, or the character-driven comedy. It holds up beautifully.

The line delivery by both Carrey and Jeff Daniels is pitch perfect. Some of the best I've seen in a comedy. I actually find it one of Daniels' best performances, even though he's normally a serious actor.

- I can't feel my fingers any more Lloyd, they're...they're numb!
- Maybe you should wear these extra gloves. My hands are starting to get a little sweaty.
- Extra gloves...? You have a pair of extra gloves...this whole time?
- ...Yeah. We're in the Rockies!
- ....I'm gonna kill you.
- Hwat?
- I'm gonna KILL YOU!

Movie is great, watch the director commentary for some insight from a guy who actually really cared about the animation they used and mimicking the Tex Avery style. There are little details you'll notice after that are mmm, so good.

Cameron Diaz never looked better than she did in this movie. 13 year old me thought it was the same girl who played Kelly Bundy. Loved The Mask. It's still a great film.

It took me about 10 years to understand half ifnnot most of the films humor. First time I saw this film was in kindergarten, our teacher put it on as free time. Not the smartest ideas, but then again from these types of "bad ideas" I turned out pretty decentm

That condom joke is one of the best jokes that you'd never get as a kid but as an adult find hilarious.
