Night Trap is prob the best, so I'd expect that.
Not to mention that got a re-release not too long ago, so I'm sure asking the publisher should be pretty easy. Even if that anniversary edition is the much more definite way to play that. I do wonder how they'll handle the video quality for FMV titles, now that I think about it.

I imported the JP version of the first MD Mini and there's no issues to worry about. Just plug and play. Can even set language for games to English. Definitely probably worth taking a wait-and-see for the line-up though, since the first MD had, like, twenty games that may or may not have been with it depending on region.

Genesis/Mega Drive NSO is M2. I think the 64 one is by NERD though.
Thanks! Yeah, I'd likely just stick with a western version if it gets a confirmed release...just have a nagging feeling that it won't for some reason lol.

Secretely hoping the Taiwan/Korea model of the original version doesn't make those games exclusive to it not candidates, as I'd honestly like to see Alien Soldier pop up...

Actually on that Treasure note, between the Yuyu Hakusho on the last one and Magical Taruruto-kun here showing they've pulled off the licensing for the pedigreed developer... Wonder if there's a chance we'll see McDonald's Treasure Land Adventure? Haven't played it ever actually, but knew of its existence.

We already got the confirmation from the interview that is not the case but let me clarify this. I watched the whole stream too and they made a number of comments that pointed otherwise. For example, after reaching the fifth Mega CD game they said "that's the number of Mega CD for today, we will now go on to present 5 Megadrive games". There were other too, see below.
Well, that's a relief! My bad, then.

Wait there was a Game Gear Mini that didn't release outside Japan?! I'd buy that in an instant

Man, everytime I see this sega retro stuff, it hurts a little! They were just so great in the 90's and it sucks that they completely botched it. The games felt so different and inventive. I will be interested to see how the USA version is stacked as far as game library.

Oddly enough, other than Snatcher, I think Road Avenger is probably my most wanted CD title.

So you slept on the Asian Genesis Mini 1 and have chosen the ugly Western genesis mini ? (crappy controller + a bad Alex Kidd 😆)

One game I'd really like but won't happen because it's on the first mini, technically speaking:

People were saying that because Retro-Bit has the exclusive rights to the 6 button pad, Sega (and Nintendo for the Switch) can't sell the 6B in the West.
As far as I can tell that's just a licensing deal and not even an exclusive one. Sega did the 3 button overseas for nostalgia's sake going by interviews, I don't think it's really more complicated than that.

Hmm, why would Nintendo also sell the 3B in the West, though...
I believe there's something else at play here...

Probably also nostalgia. The 3B was what most used in the west tbh.
Not really here in Western Europe. All my friends that had a MD got the 6B pretty early in the MD lifecycle. And the MD2 bundles all came with a 6B.

Plus the Switch NSO app has games that work much better with 6B, like Contra, so it's very strange that both companies decided to bring the 3B.

The 6-button didn't come out until 1993. I always associate it with the later part of the system's life cycle but maybe other countries think differently.

I mean, the 6B didn't even release until late 1993 (alongside SF2SCE) and didn't come packed-in with any hardware until the ($399) US CDX in 1994. It was a pretty late cycle addition and in the US marketed almost exclusively for fighting and sports games, Sega actually never packed it in with core Genesis models iirc.

I do wish NOA/NOE would release the 6B classic controller too. Maybe they will if Sega/M2 decide to update the Genesis app with CD games, like a mini relaunch.

Yeah, the MD situation was a bit different in EU. Here's a 1993 bundle from UK:

in Japan, the curation for the games is also much different because the Mega Drive has a weird sort of "prestige" status amongst core gamer types there that isn't too much different from how the Saturn is retroactively perceived in the West now. i think SoE/SoA demonstrated they were going straight for nostalgia over all else when you consider the inclusion of the 3-button pad over the drastically improved 6-button one and some the game changes that went from "cult/core gamer hit" to "Alex Kidd".

It's worth noting that the first MD Mini got a 16+ by PEGI because of Castlevania: Bloodlines (according to their site).

Meanwhile the PC-Engine Mini got away with a 12+ despite:

PEGI said:
Horrific scenes can be found in 'Snatcher' and include the body of a dog with its viscera exposed and the decapitated corpse of a man.

I do wonder if they took into account that it was in Japanese and figured no kid would get that far in.

It is certainly worth considering as we have that new cartoon on the way and this is easily the best version of the game to this day. Ecco CD is especially iconic for the hardware too so while I am sure some would complain of covering the same ground with games like that it is too significant to ignore entirely.

Ecco 2 CD was not released in Japan IIRC so I suppose that makes more sense overall, but the original games CD version is seriously wonderful and I would be disappointed if they skipped either outright. Ecco Jr can remain skipped.

I do wonder if they took into account that it was in Japanese and figured no kid would get that far in.
I suppose that is possible, but the decapitation scene is seriously like thirty minutes into the game. I feel like if I had the device as a child I absolutely would have gotten that far in through brute force.

It's about thirty-forty minutes in... assuming you can read. Snatcher is so menu-heavy I can't imagine anyone getting through unless they used the Google Translate smartphone method.

Anyway, if Snatcher did prove problematic for ratings then they could always do what Konami did for a load of the Japanese ports and slap a greyscale filter over the scenes in question. I'd rather they didn't, but it's an option.

Personally, I say go whole-hog on nostalgia pandering and get Mortal Kombat while you're at it.

It better have that Mortal Monday video in it.

Whoa just saw this. Haven't purchased a mini console yet but might jump in for this if the selection is good. Definitely if it has Snatcher and/or a few other unexpected gems.
Would be boss if they put the Sega CD versions of Ecco 1+2 even though I'm guessing the Genesis versions were probably on the original Genesis Mini. Those CD soundtracks were legendary!

Jurassic Park on Sega CD was one of my favourite games on the console. Sega used to kill it with licensed games in the 90s. I'd love to see some of those on this thing as well.

It would be nice to see Shining Force II on it as well.

I'd think that would be guaranteed since it was already on the Asia version last time around. I'd be surprised if the regional exclusives from mini 1 don't make it to the other regions this time round (aside from the ones with no langauge for that region IE Tant-R/Langrisser II for the western one).

Fingers crossed that this gets a US release. If we get Popful Mail, Snatcher, Keio Flying Squadron and Dark Wizard it's a must buy.
