The series is not about strong character driven story.
Story focuses more on the world lore.

This is quite the hyperbolic statement, there were plenty of interesting reveals across several platforms and genres. Even if you like none of them, you should still appreciate their volume and variety, the show was awesome.

It truly does look good. Not exactly what you'd expect from Square's previous mobile output.
After the Retronauts episode on the FF Legend titles I think I'll be picking this up. Do the Romancing SaGa games still have all that crazy party customization that those Game Boy games had?

Not really. You can only die at the beginning (during the tutorial) and at the very end, and even then, you can (should) save anywhere, anytime, and reset/reload when things go awry.
It does require meticulous gameplay, though, so it may be impossible to finish for someone who just wants to rush head first onto the boss.
They could have walked it back with neglectible backslash. Promised or not, it's still damn lucky it's coming out on vita
Localization Alert: It's the worst I've ever seen. Most fan localizations are better than this. The game is awesome though. Set your expectations accordingly.
Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy II and Final Fantasy IV 2D remakes for PSP look pretty great too.

SaGa series is similar to Final Fantasy in that they share title name and some gameplay element. There is no shared universe or continued stories between entries.
You can start with any entry in the series.
To be fair, the localization only looks bad by modern standards. In general, it does come across as slightly bland and awkward at times, but I never had any problem understanding what was going on. It's not, say, like the original releases of Final Fantasy Tactics or Final Fantasy 4. The game isn't even that strongly story-focused either, due to its non-linearity.
I'm curious to play this. It's one of those series I never played but always wanted to, I guess now's the time.
The Android version was crap, and I tried to return it after playing it for like 5 minutes but S-E gave me the complete run around and eventually said no. I'm tempted to still grab a version that doesn't have the awful control scheme, but I'll probably have to wait for a sale.
