So anyone else got the full combo of coil whine and fan noise?lol

Damn my luck.

Atleast the high pitched fan sort of hides the coil whine. But it's a more annoying sound.

People who say theirs don't do that either have ambient noise that's louder in their room or have In a perfect world, all consoles would achieve the level of quiet MS did with the XSX. It's not even whisper quiet. It's straight up silent.

It's silent when off but it does make some noise simply because air is being moved by the fan. You can only really hear it when you're a foot away though. Honestly Microsoft could slow the fan down even further when in dash to inch closer to pure silence but unless you game with the console in your lap I don't think anyone will complain about the noise output.

In theory you can. You just make the console draw less power, which has a very obvious effect on performance, so they'll never do that. We just need to live with it apparently.

I can't hear a thing when playing mine so far. I guess I lucked out.

My Series X is louder but that's probably because of the external hard drive.

Coil whine on mine is so bad I think my PS4 pro is quieter. Another generation of poor hardware design by Sony.
hopefully the refresh in 3 years is quiet.

I've got the same issue and it's more audible in person, the microphone isn't going to pick up on it as well as you can hear it. I don't understand trying to downplay it when there's numerous people in this thread that have said it's clearly audible in person, not just when you're right next to it.

As I previously said, mine does the same thing, so I know it's "clearly audible in person". What I'm downplaying is that it's so loud that it pierces through the sound of a game while wearing headphones at 6+ feet. Mine sounds exactly like what is in the video, and the room has to actually be silent to notice it from a distance. If someone is really straining to hear it even with headphones on, then I suppose they will notice it more. I'm even using semi-open headphones while gaming, and they normally don't isolate all that well.

Like I also said though, it might be a positional issue. I put mine behind my TV, and while I can still hear it when there's absolutely nothing else going on in the room, it's entirely drowned out with game audio. And I don't have it blasting either.

Your PS5 is noisier than a jet engine, or did you end up getting a quiet Pro?

Got a slight coil whine on my ps5 which cannot be heard with headphones. Its about the same as my late revision ps4 pro had.
I will accept it.

I'd say they they are about the same decibel level. PS4 pro is a loud fan hum while this is just a loud electrical whine.

Not yet, because I've seen so many others saying they have it too. I'm wondering if it's just how they are, and I'll end up with the same thing. That said, I don't find it okay which is why I'm trying to get more feedback from owners.

I seem to have it too. Funny thing - I can hear it when PS5 is sleeping as well. Luckily: 1. I need to come really close to hear it, 2. I don't care. :)

Mine has coil whine in Miles but it's not unbearably loud and I'm sat about 3 feet away from the console and can't really be heard with game audio. The issue I have is that the disc drive makes a horrific grinding noise when the console's vertical, had to put it horizontal which is disappointing as I wanted to have it vertical. I'll probably get in touch with Sony after the new year and ask about a repair, but for now I'm just glad it's as quiet at it is coming from Pro. I'll take a faint buzz over the jet engine Pro.

I really hope they can iron out this shit in production over the coming months. I'm definitely not touching the PS5 before this is sorted.

Well, that's certainly a take.

I mean, you can't hear it unless you turn down every other sound source in your room and it's a silent room.

This is so unfortunate, this is really making me hesitant to buy if one was available.

It's giving me OG PS4 flashbacks, where I had to trade it in for a slim which was virtually quiet in comparison.

Who's to say it won't get worse over time?

Mine has it, sometimes: i can hear it with demons souls if i put my ear close to the console with the room in silence (with no game audio), otherwise i don't hear anything.

I always play with headphones so i'm not worried (i didnt notice anything during the 5h i played yesterday).

That's clearly not what people are experiencing. And I use my consoles in a PC-like desk setup, so they're fairly close to me. I can't stand buzzing shit. None of my other electronics or my PC buzz. I once bought a Samsung 24" display (with built in PSU) that buzzed like these PS5 consoles and I sent that shit back within minutes.

There's no need to defend this.

Well, you can add me to the list of disappointed buyers. Sitting about 2,5 m from the PS5, and as soon as there are moments of quiet (which basically is all the time in Demons Souls due to lack of music), it's highly audible

Has anyone sent it back to Sony or have they even at least acknowledged the issue yet?
Sony won't acknowledge shit. IF they care to fix the problem they will quietly release a revision like they did with the Pro. People will then have to compare model numbers and try to find out themselves if anything changed. This whole thing is so disappointing, they improved the fan noise so much over the Pro only to fuck it up and cheap out on the power supply.

It looks like ReviewTechUSA's editor got a replacement for coil whine.

I would take the whine over my silent ps5 which keeps constantly crashing. At least you can play games :)

Well, this is odd. Last night my PS5 started making weird cracking / creaking noises. It almost sounds like the disc drive trying to eject or something but there's nothing in it.

When do you guys think Sony will have new revision PS5's? I guess everything they sell until very end of December is rev 1 with possibility of being loud. I received a mail from one retailer for limited stock next week. I want the console but must resist somehow.

Don´t get your hopes up that they will change anything, i´ve bought a revision Pro in 2018 and it also had severe coil whine. even the 500million edition PS4s had it.

might sound harsh but people will have to deal with it or they will have to decide against the console. thats why i never exchanged my Pro, it had coil whine but a good fan so i kept it.

the more baffling thing to me is why is there a PSU in the consoles at all since the PS4 gen? why don´t they have external PSUs like the Xbox 360 brick? people could put the external PSU wider away from them or build a casing for it.

Nope. Nope.

Ever since my old Pioneer plasma had a bad capacitor and would buzz like hell - but you couldn't hear it while the audio was on but in quiet moments it'd be noticible. Became the bane of my existence - I'd be so pissed the entire time and know it was just lurking on the edges to piss me off. Ever since then all my electronics are defined by their silence, and I spent extra on my PC rig to get extra whisper quiet. Can stand any distractions - even using headphones - don't care, got to me silent (and spinning disks in my comcast dvr even annoys me).

This here.... It'd get straight up yeeted. Why does Sony think that's ok for a 500 dollar piece of hardware when so many things are tracking towards silent operations - including going to SSD. Yeesh.

I can hear mine every time I'm in the map menu in Spider-Man. It's annoying. I lucked out and got a quiet PS4 Pro and my PS5 is louder than it.

Welp, this is some bullshit, I guess I am happy I wasn't able to get one... but as others have said, Sony won't acknoledge shit, and it will probably be months before the fix it... if they do.

Not sure if I should be happy, that I don't seem to have Coil Whine issues, but rather a fan, that's not really quiet...you can hear it in the menu and you can really hear it during gameplay, it's not as a bad as a typical gaming laptop or a launch PS4 Pro, but for the size of that thing it is annoying or at least disappointing (for me). I suspected a really quiet system, based on the size and initial press previews/reviews. Not sure my new PS4 Pro is louder at this point than the PS5. I guess I'll just have to get used to it...my One X was really silent compared to the PS5, no idea about the Series X but I guess it's the same. One friend lucky enough to have a PS5 reports the same, so doesn't seem like a very rare case.

Also they shouldn't have promoted dampening on the blu-ray drive, because there is none ;) it is extremely loud and can cause the plastic sides to vibrate until you touch them or "press" them. Aside from the whole issues with installing games (then they disappear and you have to install them again or the fact that the ps4 disc will always install the ps4 copy again, if you want to have it on your PS5 or not). Demon's Souls didn't launch today, had to restart the console for the game to launch again, the Store only downloads one file at a time and no longer 2-3 like it was the case for PS4, etc. I don't know, don't get me wrong, I like the games and the speed of the system and the Controller, all is fine, but these are issues I didn't expect to run into to be honest.

I recorded the coil whine with my phone and here is the thing: when I watched the recording it sounded 10x worse than it does in real life. Phone mic picked up all the noise from it but I cannot hear anything unless my ear is next to the console.

Thats way louder and the frequency is more annoying than the coil whine my PS5 has.

but as i said, in Demon´s Souls it was more silent in Boletaria than in the Stonefang area, in Stonefang´s beginning you just have to look at the horizon and pan the camera back to the forge building and the frequency of the whine changes.

played a few other games and so far, Demon´s Souls is the loudest from them all. but it depends on the area i am playing...
other games are barely audible.

on the flipside my PS5´s fan is super silent, it is mostly not even audible at all and when it is it does a really low sound.

Yep, just watched his video. He had a brand new console shipped in 8 days and then shipped his old one with the coil whine. Not sure if this is representative of the whole support experience, but it is a good sign. Might contact Sony for a replacement in a few weeks if it continues to be an annoying issue.

Yupp. That sticker thing was low hanging fruit and they just ran with it. They're in a position to actually get action from Sony due to the exposure, but instead they post that crap. Disgusting.

That makes me tempted to contact them in a week or two and try my luck. Though I wouldn't be surprised if his experience wasn't indicative of what to expect.

If I recall that person had other major issues plus coil whine. Sony is not going to be sending out replacements because you hear a little buzzing noise. Fyi I do have a slight sound coming from mine but I dont expect it to be replaced due to it. Also 99% the replacement has the same "thing". Its not a defect. Its how it was mass produced. Those who say "theirs is dead silent" are likely wrong. They might not be able to hear the noise due to hearing loss. (True story lol)

Yeah, I suspect this is a widespread problem. My friend said they couldn't hear coil whine on their unit...until I told them what to look out for. Now they can't unhear it lol.

I know what you're saying, but a lot of people in here including myself hear more than a little buzzing noise. It's not true that they all have the same exact degree of the issue; some people just have it louder than others. The OP of this thread can hear it over their TV sound, for example.

Anyone found a video of a silent PS5 yet? No one with silent ones seem to take videos....

Mine buzzes, I can hear it from about 2 metres away if I mute the tv/quiet scenes during games but it's quieter than my PS4 Pro was, regardless of what I've played I've not heard the fan going into hairdryer mode so I'm quite happy.

I'll take coil whine over the jet engine fan. I remember what my first PS4 used to sound like when I played Killzone shadow fall lol. I find the buzzing noise I'm getting far more tolerable than a really loud fan.

Game wise Demon souls seems to make the buzzing loudest compared to Spiderman and Astro.

I'd liken the buzzing I'm hearing to Plasma TV's used to own that would buzz on bright scenes.

The bad part is people mention it being worst with Demon's Souls - the only (?) "made" for PS5 game (Yes, Astrobot is great but not visually demanding in the same sense). Which I assume to mean get ready for the DS level whine to be the norm.

Seems weird that Sony made a point of improving the cooling because PS4 Pro was too loud but somehow managed to overlook this issue.

I haven't had a product with noticeable coil whine since my R9 280X and thats an old ass gpu.
