It seems that a lot of people have always wanted a version of Pokémon that basically looks like Dragon Quest XI. Sword and Shield are close. Honestly I think the 3DS games were a significant step in that direction.

I don't think they'll ever step back from turn-based though. It makes the game more accessible in Japan, and at this point the basic rule set is pretty much an esport.

Lighting is worse, texture detail is worse, resolution is 1/4 of Sword and Shield. Shall I continue?

Found a screenshot and this is WFF on Vita? Shit looks really clean and nice honestly
victory_pose_fix.jpg

Really surprising given how much weaker a Vita is than a Switch

Literally none of them build upon what the op is talking about. They aren't improving the rpg and making changes to that.

One is a fighting game, two are glorified supergameboys for their respective consoles, a camera game they haven't touched since 64, etc.

Nothing the op said was too obtuse for you to not get that, holy shit.
Eh Pokémon Colosseum and Gale of Darkness are probably the closest things to what some people mean when it comes to a larger budget Pokemon RPG. Snap is the closest thing to the anime as well.

I wouldn't use Sun and Moon as examples of expanding the series. The changes in those games primarily limit player choice. It is unreasonable to compare the most linear games in the series with the idea of a big open world pokemon game.
Sun and Moon has far more player choice than pretty every Pokemon game pre X/Y and especially more choice than Let's Go.

On topic. I only like the multiplayer to this series, pls cut out the bullshit already.

Get rid of ivs, they are trash. They add nothing of value, becauese regardless of what you want to build, you would naturally want the perfect iv version of that pokemon. You gain nothing as a player if they have modest ivs.

Give me the entire roster of moves a pokemon can learn as tms n hms. Stop the egg hatching bullshit. There is nothing fun about making my two pokemon fuck. So I can get a move transferred. That is so much more time consuming and adds nothing to the game than filler bullshit.

I can't remember if TMs are infinite and if Hm slaves are still a thing (I stopped at y), but for the love of god fix this. Holy shit.

Make improving n resetting evs quicker, evs can stay since they actually allow for different builds for certain pokemon. But speed that process up. Again less work, more fun.

The mp is satisfying because of the strategy, and nothing about the work adds to that. So gut it pls. Additionally the theory that youngins would be housed by competitive types, um they still are going to have that happen to them anyway? Nature of multiplayer.

Single player wise, I can tolerate that shit for what it is. Not for me, but the quicker I can form a team after I'm done with solo stuff, the better.

So games that don't have even a fraction of the normal scope of a mainline Pokémon game are considered the closest thing to what people want in terms of budget? LOL
Go replay those games, you have no idea what you're talking about.

That's the arguement though. To get that kind of budget and production values, those games had to be scaled down in terms of scope. Seeing Pokemon live and breath in Snap is great and all but it was still just an hour long on-rails photography game.

For everyone complaining about Sword and Shield not looking like DQXI: stop.

There are over 800 Pokemon, a huge graphical update would be a MASSIVE undertaking. Sword and Shield are using the same Pokemon models from the 3DS games for a reason, and Gamefreak clearly made those models with the intent of reusing them for the foreseeable future. We aren't getting any significant graphical changes until GF decides to retire the 3DS models, and who knows when that'll be.

TMs became infinite in Gen 5. HMs were gotten rid of in Gen 7

isn't colosseum just pokemon stadium?

Fair point on gale of darkness tho, but didn't that game have tons of features missing from regular ass pokemon?

Y was gen 6? It's why I did the qualifier on the tms. I felt like I remember being able to use the same tm multiple times no issue, but remember I definitely had a fly slave.

Mass Effect had the most wasted potential and thats a fact. By the third novel it began to suck. With Cerial Killer Kai Leng, poor story points/new characters/ending of the third game and of course we all know about Andromeda.

It could have been the next Halo, but it died almost as quick as Emily Wong on Twitter.

Eh, the Pokemon models themselves barely come up in this thread though. The weird low res texture on the trainer's outfit for example is a much more baffling sight.

Colosseum was an RPG too. But, yes, both were very limited compared to the portable titles. There was no actual world traversal, or rather routes connecting the locations, you just chose points from a map. No wild Pokemon battles at all in Colosseum and very limited ones in XD, so you mostly got Pokemon by stealing specific "Shadow" Pokemon from enemy trainers and purifying them. The whole experience was very limiting (likely deriberately so in order to avoid stepping on the toes of the main series, in spite of all their talk about it being a portable game incompatible with home consoles).

I'm not going to add in my opinion to every thing I say, what kind of person does that? It's already implied.
The thing is people act like it's a fact and if you try to say otherwise you're labelled as an overly defensive fanboy, and it gets tiring. We see 2 minutes of gameplay for SWSH, a huge map of the region that shows potential non-linearity, an increase in the sense of scale, better graphics, and absolutely no idea of what gameplay innovations there will be yet, and all people can do is dump on the game. It's crazy to me.

I'm replaying Platinum right now and I come appreciate a lot more the changes we got in Gen 7. Pokemon it's not quite there yet, but it does a lot of things right.

Because these people don't want a Pokemon game.

They want a generic bad "AAA" game with a Pokemon skin.

Sometimes I wonder how different the franchise's trajectory would have been if Nintendo owned 100% of the rights to Pokémon.

It's just not enough after 20 years and the budget they could have if they so desired. That's what this thread is about, lamenting how little they have really done for the series when compared to how much they could.

Yes, it's all theoretical ... but other developers have managed to take that leap. Developers with significantly less success have shown much more ambition than Game Freak ever has. For many of us, this is completely baffling.

I don't get why every new thing needs to lead to a huge change that makes said new thing impossible

Use the same pokemon models. How about change the actual environment, the fields we traverse and all that? DQ11 looks a shit ton better than Pokemon S&S not just because of monster models but because of the environments, which are not only super open in comparison but also just look miles better.

I get the idea of wanting the good days to keep rolling on. But you make it sound as if its a weird outside cliche that is pushing for a big update on the formula that does justice to its vision (i.e. a significantly more open pokemon game). From what I have seen it seems the community is split 50/50 on this.

A big part of what makes Pokemon great (for me) is that it is a jrpg where you can go out and find your party through exploration, and have millions of different party combinations. I think there is a lot of things that they can do to make this exploration better, having persistent Pokemon on the map was one, having a more open world is a second.
No I'm not. I'd argue of all fans who have touched anything pokemon, those who care about pokemon meta/competitive elements are in the vast minority. Even if they drive tens of millions in core rpg units sales.

I think you're misunderstanding my point about how they've catered to a niche before with spinoff games. I'm using that as an example of why they have no excuse not to at least attempt to fulfill the dream.

What actual changes to the gameplay do people consider as a leap besides going open world? People often cite DQ11 as an example and even that is just a bigger Sun and Moon with controllable camera and no random encounters. That hardly seems like this insurmountable lack of ambition people speak of. We don't even know anything about the new games besides how they generally look.

Pokemon Sun & Moons corridors and linearity is a sin.
Pokemon Sun and Moon gives you the most freedom of any Pokemon game made.

Because you know what's the most import part of any Pokemon game?

The Pokemon you can use.

Not to mention even older Pokemon are much more usable in the newer games due to movepool updates.

PS Vita games don't look better than Sword and Shield people, stop.

The people using DQ as an example are on point tho, the main thing here is the presentation.

I think Pokémon needs a complete new battle system. The turn based combat was decent in the 90s but 2 decades on we are still seeing the old turn based system.

The future of Pokémon is running around in the overworld and the trainer being able to catch them simultaneously without going into a seperate screen, thus being able to pop Pokémon out of their Pokeballs at will.

Square Enix had to change in the 00s by changing the battle system from Final Fantasy IX to XII.

Gamefreak have to do this for Gen 9 surely?...

Deflection yet again. Having increased freedom in one area doesn't outright prevent them from trying to improve the overworld itself as well. The overworld IS filled with extremely narrow pathways and very limited exploration, and that is something that can be improved.

A good in another part doesn't make the other bad go away.

I want the areas we get to visit to be less like corridors like they were in SM or XY and be more open. I don't want an open world Pokemon game, but I do want exploration of some kind.
I kind of wish battles were more on the scale of Colisseum and XD, and that we didn't get the same camera angles and animations we had in the 3DS games. I think the camera in battle should be more dynamic.

Linarity is not a bad thing that needs to be "improved."

A game having lacking "exploration" is not a flaw.

Saying a game is bad for being linear is like saying a sandwich is bad for having ham and cheese in it instead of peanut butter.

These threads are always focused on either pointless aesthetics or wanting Pokemon to drop its identity.
In which way aesthetics is pointless?
I'm not asking for Pokémon of The Wild per see, but it is so wrong wanting that they upgrade their visual game a little bit?
