They use the Minecraft model. The game sold gangbusters at launch, that funded them for years probably, and with every new update they get a TON of new, raw sales.
I'm sure they're working on another game at this point, too. Even if only at prototype stage.
If that's the thing, then I'm happy for them. Wasn't keeping up with sales/charts. Going up in Steam chart for big update sounds pretty good. They turned over almost £100m revenue in the 27 months to Nov 2018. They have a massive profit margin. I think they have like £50m+ cash on hand. NMS is basically printing money for them.
I bet when this update hits they'll go back to the top of the Steam sales charts again. At this rate, they can easily justify putting out updates for free and eventually putting NMS on some kind of long term support when whatever their next project is comes out. Maybe in a few years they could put some cosmetic MTX in to break even on whatever running costs they have, but right now they are doing gangbusters.
I feel like the topic is a liiittle misleading compared to what he actually said in the video. He said someone could create a Rocket League type system with logic I guess. It's not something that's already in there.

I pre-ordered it and put 100 or so hours into the base game. It was still a great survival and exploration game back then.
Similar story here, I didn't have any real problems with the launch version either, I understood the concerns but I had still fun with it. But that's not important now I think, it's pretty much a whole different game at this point.Totally agree with you. I bought it at launch full price and even loved it back then , to see where it has landed now is just amazing .
It's basically the most ambitious game I have ever played , it's definitely not the most polished of course but that's to be expected with a small team.
I will be jumping back in again as I do with every update they do , and with the nexus and possibility of finding unique gear / ships I could be here for a long while .
One of us one of us.Bought. Ran around a little bit yesterday and this game is really pretty.

Tried the experimental PC branch this morning, runs way better than I remember the game running on my system. Starting to alleviate my fears about Beyond/VR on my rig.
The building grind can be overwhelming. But how would you fix that automatic process and make that fun? I'm thinking it's like Minecraft and there you still have to mine iron ore and cut down trees to craft an iron sword, and you need to craft an owen and find sand to melt into glass and combine glass to make glass pane etc.all i want is a way to automate the crafting/plant growing/refining/combining processes so everything runs like in a factory without me having to run from spot to spot collecting shit and then making shit to make more shit all of it manually.
this was insane and killed the game for me.

I don't know, the reason I never play in creation mode is because of the lack of challenge since you just get everything for free.
Can't wait to milk your pets.
I think with the Next update last year they were at the top of the Steam charts for a while. I ended up double dipping to get it on PC. I wouldn't be surprised if they hit the top of the charts again with this update.
Between the millions of copies they've sold, the good PR from all these updates, and the fact their team is relatively small, I bet they are happy to keep distributing these updates for free and can easily afford to do it.
Edit: If you want to see how well they are doing, check their accounts on Companies House (companies in the UK have to file accounts publicly). They declared £29m profit for the financial period of the 18 months ended 31 Jan 2018, and £30m for the 9 months ended 31 Oct 2018. They had nearly £100m turnover across that period!
Clearly supporting NMS with free updates is good business for them, and it's well deserved. They put out updates, and then even more people buy it.
Ah okay I understand, like those complex machines people make in Minecraft. That could be fun yeah but I'm not smart enough to get something like that functional lol. Personally I kinda like the crafting gameplay tbh, I have more issues with the Artemis grind, I feel like the story payoff isn't worth all that work.conveyor belts.
have you ever played infinifactory or this kind of games ?
if refiners and mixers and plant growing machines were able to pop out the result next to the machine, and able to start a craft/refining process on their own when items just fall in a hole somewhere on the machine, then add conveyor belts and it's done.
The fun would be in building your systems, not running from one machine one to another like a Sisyphean headless chicken doing the same thing again and again and again and again.
Vulkan switch as well as optimization. Also tesselated terrain optionsWhat's on the experimental branch at the moment? I'm downloading it at the moment and I assume it's just performance improvements but is there a list somewhere?
God, I hope there's an actual milking animation and not just a machine that generates the milk via proximity.

I haven't played this game in quite a while, but with the current updated version of the game, is the game algorithm able to create the truly giant creatures seen in the original trailers?
Might be time for me to jump back in. How's the PS4 Pro performance these days?
and it will introduce the next 100 annoying and gamebreaking bugs
seriously, cool when people like this game...i find it awful and still far from rockstable, at least the last big update there were so many broken things, straight up to corrupting save files and stuff like that is unaaceptable, regardless how many things they add to this boring game.
and no wonder they are still supporting it, every time they release a big free update it generates sales and therefore cash. i don´t see the "big turnaround", the game was boring Day One and is boring now.
Totally agree at this part. After the NEXT update, there was another one, I forgot the name... But either way, the NEXT update reset like, everything, I lost my original planet and everything. Then the one after NEXT messed up my home planet and base. Changed the colors and everything, realigned parts of my base so I couldn't walk through doorways at times. That was loads of work, down the drain.and it will introduce the next 100 annoying and gamebreaking bugs

no, that was a mock feature devs showed on how to use the community tools.
NMS was always billed as a chill exploration experience even before launch, so I don't know what to tell you there (well, other than "do your research next time"). But just because this game was obviously not for you doesn't mean you can just straight-up ignore the biggest transformation a game has gone through since FFXIV.i don´t see the "big turnaround", the game was boring Day One and is boring now.
Right now it's pretty good if you set the res to 1080p in system settings. An annoying workaround, I know, but Beyond is also expected to bring a ton of performance improvements with it, due to all the optimizations needed for VR.Might be time for me to jump back in. How's the PS4 Pro performance these days?
Looking forward to playing this with my new Valve Index! Really happy they got this working with the new controllers too!
Speaking of milking creatures, it would be cool if they had added in farming mechanics ala Stardew Valley.
If you're not already on the experimental branch with the Vulkan update, try thatBought this game yesterday, and it is crashing to desktop all the fucking time. OMG.
