That was my takeaway too. That Biden also said that he won't interfere with whatever the Justice Department wants to do, plus any state charges that may await Trump in New York, show that Trump may be wrapped up in legal battles for the next few years or so.Reposting from PoliERA:
One thing we've learned from the Bill Barr DoJ is that U.S. attorneys value their independence and aren't easily coaxed into investigating or not investigating things due to pressure from above.
The U.S. attorneys are going to do their thing, and I don't anticipate that Biden or his AG will interfere, even if they might want to.
Ah yes, the let powerful corrupt assholes get away with it doctrine totally served us well and definitely helped reduce partisanship....This won't be a popular statement on this board, but I think this is the right move for Biden's administration. Any step we can take to reduce partisan bullshit at the federal level needs to happen. Further polarization and demonization of the "other party" is untenable for our democracy at this point.
yup, let the DOJ handle it.Pretty sure he's just positioning himself as above the fray while letting the DOJ and the states do what they want.
But there's nothing America hates more than confronting and reckoning with its failures, so.
Why the outrage here? Do we really want Biden to scream "lock him up?"
There's people that will investigate and potentially charge.
You don't want a president to do that.
I hope that is the case. IRS investigations should continue, along with States using their rights to prosecute.Pretty sure he's just positioning himself as above the fray while letting the DOJ and the states do what they want.
But there's nothing America hates more than confronting and reckoning with its failures, so.
50% chance Biden straight up pardons Trump of whatever he's accused of.
He should be prosecuted and held accountable for his crimes. That doesn't require Biden to make prosecuting him a personal, Presidency-defining crusade.Lmao this first page is full of apologists. A lot of you call Trump a fascist and say things like "Mango Mussolini", but he shouldn't be prosecuted federally because???? Which is it? Is he an existential threat or not? Some of ya'll just really wanna go back to brunch.
No, and he's not preventing others from investigating and/or prosecuting him. He's just not going to push for it himself.
The President should NEVER be involved in DoJ decisions. This is good. This is how it's supposed to operate.
"But the most important thing on this is that he will not interfere with his Justice Department and not politicize his Justice Department."

Genuinely confused. Second chances for who? This is a positive. Just like post-2008 crash, the country and world needs to look forward, not back. Clearly Biden believes in second chances, and I do too.
This and then build another prison on top of that prison.
That's not true. There's always the danger of another Trump around the corner, regardless of what happens to the one we have. Think about it, has any conviction in history have ever truly deterred other bad actors from committing similar crimes? You cannot eradicate corruption. The only way forward is to continue to educate the voter base. You aren't protecting America from another psychopathic demagogue if you shield them from consequences after one wreaks havoc.
Hey, like it or not, Trump appeals to millions of people. It's better to make him old news than continue to focus the country's attention on him.Fuck that.
Ah yes, the let powerful corrupt assholes get away with it doctrine totally served us well and definitely helped reduce partisanship....
That's the implication.

Exactly. I think people are reading too much into this. There's a difference between "being consumed by" investigations and letting the DOJ and state justice departments run their investigations unimpeded
This is disappointing if this comes true. And it may bite Biden in the butt if his lack of action allows Trump to run for reelection in 2024 and maybe beat him. But as the article mentions, Biden's investigations or lack of them do not affect state investigations, and it seems like New York state if further along than anyone towards prosecuting Trump and maybe his family too. Your thoughts?
