They are worthy of discussion, sure, but the article was not discusing them. The article was pretty much "Hey, this exists, let me describe it to you, funny, right? Look at it."

And they didn't seem to directly apologize about what people got the most upset about, the actual nature of the porn.
Pointing out it exists and mocking it is discussing it. It's a shallow, low-quality discussion, but it is broaching the subject. Probably the most mainstream media discussion this issue has recieved in years, which yeah is really fucking sad and infuriating to me personally.

Totilo directly addresses the nature of the porn in his lengthy reply to a commenter on the apology, which I quoted and posted here. Read it.

I'm sorry, I feel we are having two different conversations so I'll stop now.

I can't get my head around what in the world you are saying. The article did not discuss the points you are making. The author watched child porn, talked about child porn, and said it could be better. I'm so confused about what you are on about.
Yeah you don't understand because you can't even bother to listen to what I'm saying. Like I've repeatedly explained it multiple times in this thread, plenty of other people understood.

Yeah you haven't made any justifying points as to why I can't be mad at that article or at Kotaku. I'm done responding too.

OK? Literally all I'm saying is that what Totilo says there (this content exists on every mainstream content platform that allows porn and is popular on those platforms) is true. As someone who was victimized by online predators as a minor, predators who used content like this to groom me, the fact that a media outlet is actually willing to even broach that subject gives me hope that maybe people are starting to realize that this is a significant problem that needs addressing. The manner in which they broached the subject was honestly pretty tasteless and crude, but it was still shining a light on what is out there...even if it did so in a bad way. Which means more people are aware of the problem.

I mean Totilo's response suggests that they learned from this about how to cover this subject better in the future. Given that hardly any other media outlets are even willing to try covering the subject in the first place...I find that hopeful.

You can disagree with that, but I have the perspective that I have because of my experiences in online communities as a minor, where I was abused, and where this kind of content is commonplace.

Er...why would I tell you that you can't be mad? I have no control over whether or not you are mad. I'm just giving you my perspective on the subject, which you can either listen to or ignore.

I'm mad that they had a chance to do a good article on this problem and squandered that chance by publishing something shallow and gross, but I believe that they've learned from it and will do better in the future.

I don't think all publicity is good publicity. I don't think making a bad article and then making an apology is enough. I don't think voicing in said apology that they can and will do better is enough. The fact that the article got made and got through the editorial process and into the computers of literal thousands of unsupecting viewers means there is something clearly wrong with the way the website edits their articles and the (I forgot the word, english is not my first lenguage, desint-something?) passing of this type of porn as something normal or even acceptable.

Again, I agree with you that this is something worth discussing, of course it is. This is the type of topic that shouldn't be pulled under the rug. Exploring this topics is fine, but as journalist they have a dutie to make informed, proper, insightful articles about said topics. Otherwise you get articles like this one that lead to apologies like this one. I have nothing against Totilo, and I like Kotaku and they have to do better and they have to show. Why is it wrong to think the apology is not enough?

It was not ok and they should remember that and work to improve.

I honestly wonder if Stephen Totilo got advice/direction from legal to not use phrases such "child porn" or "underage porn" because it could get them in worse trouble. Even the editor's note skirts these phrases even though that is the most immediately troubling aspect of the original article.

I didn't say all publicity was good publicity...so I'm not sure why you would even bring that up. Obviously this article makes them look bad, but I think Totilo articulated clearly how they messed up and understands why people were (understandably) upset with them over this. I agree with you that they have a duty to publish informative, respectful, and insightful articles and they failed to do that this time.

I mean what do you want other than the apology?

No, he directly brings that up in his reply to one of the commenters on the apology.

Better articles and time.
