In a pretty big article published by GamesIndustry.biz, Konami stated the following:

"Even with new platforms coming out, we believe high-end console games are the most important. We challenge for innovative ideas and technology within our console games and apply them to other devices, so we will continue to put effort into our console games. We also plan to increase our portfolio. In addition to the multi-device titles for PES and Yu-Gi-Oh, we plan to work on projects with other globally known IPs in the near future."

Which is pretty interesting is the timing of all of this, considering the Silent Hill trademark news we got recently. My bet is more collections for this gen, new games on the next one.

I think they meant to say "pachinko machines."

Present-day Konami can take a long walk off a short pier. They lost my support years ago.

I think we'd all love Konami to go big into console games again, but they'd have to do a lot to repair the damage they've caused.

As a quick side note: Pachinko isn't big for Konami. It wasn't even that big when MGS5 released. The only reason we got things like the MGS pachinko machine was that Konami wanted to attach their bigger IPs to their failing pachinko division.

If you don't believe me, here's some quotes from their financial reports from the last few years (currently they basically don't talk about pachinko at all)

2015 Report
Although it is expected that the pachislot and pachinko machine market may continue to face challenging conditions due to a decrease in the number of customers and strengthening of the self-restrictions promulgated by pachislot and pachinko machine manufacturers' unions and other factors, we intend to ensure the profitability of the business to boost our market presence by working in unity with production, manufacturing and sales.

2016 Report:
In the Pachislot & Pachinko Machines business, although it is expected that the pachislot and pachinko machine market may continue to face challenging conditions due to a decrease in the number of customers and strengthening of the self-restrictions promulgated by pachislot and pachinko machine manufacturers' unions and other factors, we intend to stabilize profitability in the business to boost our market presence by working integrally with production, manufacture and sales.

2017 Report:
As for pachislot and pachinko machines, although it is expected that the machine market may continue to face challenging conditions due to a decrease in the number of customers and a countermeasure to legislative changes, we intend to stabilize the business profitability mainly by series that are received favorable reviews in the market to boost our market presence by working integrally with production, manufacture and sales.

Does ANYONE know how many inhouse developers they even have left?

Are there 50? 100? 500?

I always thought it was less than 50...

I'll never forgive you, Konami.

I'll send you a thank you card if you ever resurrect Suikoden in a meaningful way.

The question is does that statement mean that Konami wants to put out high-end games on consoles or do they view consoles as high-end devices that they will continue to put out games for (like the new Contra: Rogue Corps)?

The fact they then go on to talk about putting out games with ideas/tech that can be applied to other devices makes me lean towards the the latter.

Kind of hard to take this seriously considering they haven't released any "high-end console" releases for nearly the entirety of the PS4 / XB1 / SW generation outside of MGS5.

I mean the Classic Collections for Arcade, Contra, and Castlevania were nice and all as well as the occasional Yu-Gi-Oh re-release.

I think Konami is too entrenched in their Vegas style Casino gaming division which is making money hand over fist every year to put much effort into their console and digital gaming division.

I won't be convinced until I see an entirely new Castlevania console game. Contra Rogue Corps is a start, but I need more convincing to confirm they aren't just doing lip service just to keep their old IP relevant that remained unused.

Well the four franchises they highlight on their US branding site are Bomberman, Contra, Frogger and Yu-Gi-Oh, so those are the focus I guess. You'd figure Castlevania would be up there too given the popularity of the Netflix series but I guess not.

I wonder whether they took notice of Capcom turning their reputation around with some stellar games going back to the roots of existing franchises. The fact they got M2 to do their three arcade collections suggests they might actually give a shit about releasing a quality product now.

If they really mean what they are saying, then that's a complete 180 on where they were just a couple of years ago. Good news though, obviously.
