Grubb said that it's important for Nintendo not to "start over", meaning a completely new platform where people lose their games and everyone has to buy in again. "They don't want to be the one company starting from zero, they want to build on what they have going forward".
Uh, well, they can release a successor and still do that. Switch 2, with full BC, and the same Nintendo Account, with the same Switch Online services, effectively does that. You then go into 1-2 years of cross-gen titles which come out for Switch but are significantly enhanced for Switch 2 before making Switch 2 only games. Meanwhile, big 3rd party titles can start showing up on Switch 2.
Sony and Microsoft are already following this blueprint.
I mean in terms of hardware, there is nowhere for Nintendo to go other than a massive leap forward with a successor system. They're not releasing a souped up Tegra X1 seven years later. The door closed on that like 3 years ago.
