Let me see if I understand. You say word of mouth is still selling copies of Breath of the Wild but that isn't hype. Let's agree to disagree.Because you keep insisting that hype is selling the game a year and a half from its release in an ephemeral hits driven industry.
If hype was what mattered, why did Odyssey slow down so dramatically in spite of similar scores and reception? Hint- word of mouth for one game was far more positive than for the other.

Word of mouth is very different from hype. Hype is a coordinated marketing effort. Word of mouth is just general opinion by customers.Let me see if I understand. You say word of mouth is still selling copies of Breath of the Wild but that isn't hype. Let's agree to disagree.
I didn't :) I provided a question to point out where your logic leads.
I have never gotten the feeling of boredom when solving a shrine. I think each shrine is nicely balanced of not too hard and not to easy. It is a nice quick 30 minutes of games before bed.
When the masses aren't calling it the Gane of the Year or the Best Game of album all time or other hyperbolic statements. So wait I don't understand.
Under what circumstances is a game not sold by hype, under your definition?
So if the masses are calling it that, as you say they are, then very clearly the masses enjoyed the game. When the masses aren't calling it the Gane of the Year or the Best Game of album all time or other hyperbolic statements.

Yes and it's still hype. You can enjoy something without calling it the 'best game ever'and similar. You know there were people doing it before it even came out. The whole point of marketing is to create hype among consumers,So if the masses are calling it that, as you say they are, then very clearly the masses enjoyed the game.
Okay, but the original point of your post was that it's not easy to tell how many people enjoyed the game judging by long term sales, to which I said word of mouth ad accelerating sales indicate that it is. Whether or not you want to call it hype is irrelevant, if enough people like the game to call it the greatest ever and sustain, no, accelerate, sales, then the simple fact of the matter is that the bulk of the people who buy the game enjoy it.Yes and it's still hype. You made a self defeating argument because you got lost in the semantics.
Oh, haha. Well, yes, I agree by and large. Sometimes the public happens to be right, though, this is one of those times ;)No, I love BOTW, it's a masterpiece.
But I'm just saying who cares what public opinion is.
this a joke? There were tons of threads made about how botw is the goat and stuff like thatSince launch there have always been tons of threads hating on it. I guess people who liked it didn't feel the need to make threads.
In 2018?this a joke? There were tons of threads made about how botw is the goat and stuff like that
in 2017, really 2018 discourse about botw is spotty at best. even then there are still threads that are positive for botw
Right. So it's not a joke.
I've made more than a few threads praising BotW in 2018.
"Since launch" are your words here, why are you cutting out the release year to make a point?
I think people are less likely to make a thread a year after they played a game just to praise it, but I guess Phantom Thief proved me wrong."Since launch" are your words here, why are you cutting out the release year to make a point?

im just scratching the surface here
I'm very obsessed.I think people are less likely to make a thread a year after they played a game just to praise it, but I guess Phantom Thief proved me wrong.
Regardless, it doesn't prove perception of the game changed at all. It basically swept GotY awards almost a full year after releasing.
I mean I never said it isnt still very much a liked game, I said people who like it still make threads about how much they love it, even in 2018I think people are less likely to make a thread a year after they played a game just to praise it, but I guess Phantom Thief proved me wrong.

You're doing the Goddess' work.
In the name of Din, Farore, and Nayru.
You said the opposite but it's fine, Phantom Thief corrected me.I mean I never said it isnt still very much a liked game, I said people who like it still make threads about how much they love it, even in 2018
Guess it was "all new" for Zelda fans....open world games have been a thing on consoles for well over a decade at this point. It's hardly a new thing for most
Skyward Sword having the Zelda name didn't help it move an impressive number of copies.Thought it was a boring game then, and still think it is now. Still going to sell because it's open world Zelda.

honestly its funny people keep saying that its the Zelda name thats selling it when i truly beleive most people who played BOTW are either new comers or people who havent played Zelda in a long time. Clearly the Zelda name didnt make the other games sell as well as this so why would it nowSkyward Sword having the Zelda name didn't help it move an impressive number of copies.
Where's the poll option "I think it was pretty great, just not my favorite ever, or even that year"
That wouldn't explain how it is supposedly all new for reviewers and other developers, seeing as they gushed and still gush over the gameGuess it was "all new" for Zelda fans.
Granted, the quality level of BOTW is quite astounding but it wasn't emergent gameplay either (even if some thinks it is). Don't get me wrong, it's a great game, probably in the top 5 of the Switch future life, but it wasn't genre defining. You won't say in a few years a BOTW-like game like you would say a Roguelike or a Metroidvania game.
Lol That hasn't been the case at all with SS. SS has a far more divisive general opinion than BOTW, which is far more loved and praisedAnd I've seen people defend SS as much as BotW, the world is a crazy place.

...that and SS is an awesome game so it's not crazy to defend it ;)
