La Mulana 2 killed most metroidvanias for me. They just don't compare. Legend of Grimrock 2 did similar for dungeoncrawly games.
It's just not the same when the challenge is only in combat and getting stats. That's why something like Nioh just bored me to tears. Dark Souls at least hast neat exploration going for it, but games just feel so lacking when it's just combat, no real puzzles.
Pillars of Eternity, finally, killed modern RPGs for me. Something like the Witcher series was just so terrible in comparison, so juvenile. But eh, modern RPGs like the Witcher or Dragon Age 2 haven't even managed to be equals to the Ultima series :/ It's kinda a shame how this genre just isn't getting somewhere, with few exceptions (like Pillars, Tyranny or Torment) that at least *try* to be more than combat gauntlets with a thin veneer of plot and male power fantasy to fill out the rest.
