Love how Broly jr. here has this "don't talk to me or my dad ever again" expression.

Holy shit. DBS Broly tearing apart the Mexican box office. It's the strongest debut of any DB movie in history, landing in #1 (unseating Aquaman which had been #1 since December) and it had 40% higher earnings in its first week than freaking Wreck it Ralph 2!

Source (SDP Noticias)
It also destroyed Aquaman and Spiderverse here in Uruguay, yesterday the theater was at full capacity, and it was midweek.
Movie is fantastic, and hearing the og Latam dub is like hangin out with old friends.
I fucking love Dragon Ball.

There is a rumor that Toei actually brute forced to get all the VAs back, since apparently Broly's VA was actually black listed.

Also, it was a shame the original narrator José Lavat passed away last year, but I think they nailed it with another legendary voice as his replacement, Rubén Moya AKA mexican He Man

Just watched the movie. The beginning is slow and downright boring at times, especially the Planet Vegeta stuff. Broly is also shallow as fuck even though he's a nice, likable guy. But once the fighting starts, HOLY SHIT. This is the best Dragon Ball has EVER looked. The CGI was ugly but everything else looked amazing and was so fluid. Everything Gogeta did was fucking porn. The fan service was great too. SSG Vegeta, Broly scraping Goku's head against the wall like he did to Gohan, Gogeta's fucking Soul whatever attack from Fusion Reborn. I wanna rewatch this fight over and over. It's so impressive to look like and the art style is beautiful.

The movie biggest weakness is that a lot of the stuff it puts out wasn't elaborated on. It feels like they cut too much out of it's script to meet the run time. Everything else was pretty great, but an extended cut like BOG will really do wonders for this film. I wouldn't have minded if they made it a little longer.

Also Gogeta was the GOAT.

I'm going to have to agree with Vito that a retelling might not be such a bad idea

Aka the voice of Saul Lisazo in the 1990s Rum Añejo de Bacardi commercials. For some godforsaken reason they thought Saul's voice wasn't manly enough and got Ruben Moya to dub over him lol.

caught it earlier in Toronto. Full house IMAX. Definitely adds a lot seeing it with a whole bunch of other fans. It's stupidly fun. Especially once the action ramped up. Loved it, go watch it in theaters if you can.

Movie was dope. I was annoyed not having new Dragon Ball every week over the last several months, but that animation justified the break ten times over. Jesus Christ it might be the best animation I've seen since Akira. Loved Broly's new back story and persona, way better than the original character. That brief glimpse of Ultra Instinct was hype. Freeza's reaction to Gogeta was funny as fuck. "The fuck is that!?"

Definitely gonna see it once more in theaters. Really can't wait to see where Super goes next when it returns.

Just got back awesome movie. Can't wait for Super to start back up!

Initially my theater only had it on one screen tonight at 730 but when that show sold out before 7, the theater manager thankfully kicked that stupid dog movie off a screen to add another DBS:B showing. That showing sold out too. I'm think this movie will actually make decent money this weekend

Just got finished seeing it with my younger brother earlier today. My only minor hangup was the backstory in the beginning; I kind of wished that they would've expaned upon the events during the beginning. I can see why one of the producers said that the movie had over three hours of total content during production. Other than that, the best Dragon Ball movie I've seen especially with the music and fights. Those chants during the fights were godlike.

the choreography was insaneee! watching broly beat the shit outta goku in first person was great.

whole later half of the movie felt like a toei animation demo reel. You can distinctly see different lead animators tackle different parts of the fights, most noticeable when it transitions to 3d.

Loved it. Yeah, it has a couple flaws but it is very much a love letter to Dragonball fans. From the first appearance of every SS form (thanks vegeta!) getting an explosive intro to just some of the finest animation I've ever seen. I will say I usually don't mind CG but it was pretty jarring here just because how clean the drawn stuff is. Love some of the callbacks, the small ones such as Goku mentioning they've been through the mud and cutting to a quick montage of all the villians from the original Dragonball up to Super, to an outright scene being dedicated to it in the form of Piccolo teaching the fusion dance.

I loved the way the movie was pace. Set some compelling motivations even if it takes a little retconning in the first 40 minutes and then starts the series of climaxes you never want to end.

Biggest minus for me doesn't even have to do with the movie itself but its advertising campaign. I usually go into things blind and perhaps this is my own fault for always leaping at Dragonball news, but man they really showed too much in the trailers. Gogeta would've been a really nice treat that I would have been too dumb to see coming.

Question: During the Gogeta Blue round, were those glimpses of Ul? If it was, my decently loud crowd didn't make a peep for it.

Also I wonder if Broly is going to play a part in Super now? This would be an awesome origin story a new series regular.

I don't see many anime movies in Theaters, but I saw this, with some family to boot.

Animation is GREAT (except the CG moments, which I don't think are horrible; it kinda looks like FighterZ, even!), but it's still not the same as 90s DBZ at it's best. It's a great newer take, that I definitely appreciate on it's own.

I actually loved that the movie had almost an hour of non-crazy fight to go along with the 50 minutes of Fight, basically. This legit made it feel like an actual movie, and not just fanservice to those who had watched the 100s of previous episodes, 10s of previous movies, and so on. My sister watched Buu-saga Dragon Ball with us years ago, and the first hour made he feel like she could invest into the rest of the movie without being too lost.

It also really brought the characters together, and did the Saiyan race some good. I really missed not having ANY of Team Bardock around, but I can deal, with all the OTHER cast they built up.

Ginne was cute as can be, lol. I have to say, I feel like her and Cheelai were basically the way to give every Saiyan man of importance their own "Bulma". As hyper masculine as Saiyans have been for the past few DECADES, I think this feels pretty good, and like it helps round out the characters rather well. But anyway, getting too far ahead!

Paragus actual being a Loving Dad was... WEIRDDDDD. I actually didn't buy the idea he was all about revenge ONLY in this tale. While be USED to seem simply like a hell-bent revenge character in the past, here, he seemed more like a Stage Mom that was trying too hard to live the dream through their child. I could imagine him chilling a bit, if he had any decent conversation for the past decades.

King Cold just exist to let us know Frieza is worse. I don't think he added much here.

King Vegeta was SO AFRAID of baby-Frieza so fast, lol. Sniping scene was pretty nice to show WHY, but I'd actually appreciate a little time to solidify what Cold and Frieza had done previously, to make the Saiyans so afraid.

Bardock… his growth of having a personality was SO ODD too. Unlike many others, I don't mind him going SSJ. I think Saiyans are previously incredibly blunt creatures, and unless they learn something in a FIGHT, they're never going to learn anything. Until Goku started changing the rules. What we saw in this movie was that they actually have a range of personalities, and a variety of ways to look at their own simple viewpoints. They could actually change from experiences, rather than just from things force upon them.

CHA LA into the future was FAST, just like Bardock being the only person to try and use a beam in order to save his planet. I appreciated the scenes being there, but I'd have had no issue with them each being given 2 or 3 minutes more.

Bulma's vacation wear was very conservative for her! heck, Ash's mom had on a more racy outfit in Pokémon Black and White's intro episode. This helped establish where we were (just like Beerus and Whis being there), and seeing Bulla was nice. Funny none of the rest of the family was there, though. Dragon Ball theft gave Trunks a moment to appear, along with Goten and the PIlaf gang. Nire than Gohan, ChiChi, or much of our extended cast got. This really made it feel like "The Vegeta and Briefs family!" adventure, so early on...

… Then we meet Cheelai and Leemo. I actually felt most of the "fanservice" with her was incredibly subdued. There was a scene of Paragus falling over later, where 50% of the screen was old man butt, lol. She didn't have any bouncing scenes, she wore more clothes than Broly (who got the requisite Shower scene, lol), and she was played "Spunky" more than "sexy". If anything, she reminded me of Caulifa! Leemo wasn't a good Roshi-replacement, but he definitely helped give that group some personality. I didn't expect the 2 to feel fleshed out AT ALL going in.

Oh, and Frieza is his own Bulma. Their reason for wanting the Dragon Balls were so... YEAH. I have no idea how BerryBlue was able to speak so openly about Frieza's desires, without getting blasted. Does even FRIEZA have a respect for a mother-like figure? She's one of the few of his force on this show, that never seemed INTIMIDATED by him. It was really weird for a character that barely did anything, y'know?

Skipping to the fights now. Vegeta's was definitely the best. It emphasized his tactical side, showed off his character growth, and the serious glare he had during the WHOLE THING was EXCELLENT. His "glowing Aura Base body" seemed like a reference to "super Blue" from the T.O.P. to me. And all his transformations were so SMOOTH. Goku had to nearly destroy himself each time he upped a level, Vegeta just flew up and caused an aura change. All of Vegeta's ways of moving were so unique and new, that I want one of his forms in FighterZ to be deleted, so we can get this one instead. He looked much more like a technical, "Street Fighter the Motion Picture" style fighter, than you usually EVER see in this series.

Goku's Fight was classic DBZ. Screaming, Screaming to power up. Screaming to take Damage. Screaming to let people know he was there. It also had a lot more of the blurred, non-technical movements we're used to in the series. I liked it for what it was, but I wanted to go back to Vegeta at this point, honestly. Goku DID do a red hand-held projectile that looked like a Red Rasengan in there somewhere... that was interesting! I also appreciate when he used some form of telekinesis (?!?) to hold Broly still, and talk to him. He's... never really done this kind of tactic before. That did feel like some kind of growth for him.

Gogeta was cool only because STARTBUST BREAKER. Oh, and that Ki-Nuke scream. Vegeito seems to have a lot more style and uniqueness overall, but I loved how Gogeta basically used his own version of DieDie Missle Barrage in there.

The 3D that started to show up after Vegeta's parts was interesting. I would have thought if clashed more, if the other fights didn't ALSO feel like they introduced new visual concepts / design shifts, as well. Some had more lines, some where less technical, and more fluid... and then we had the "What the heck?!?" alternate dimension battle. Yeah, that sounds like something to save for later developments!

Frieza's no-sell... and then MAXIMUM SELL kill to piss off Broly was EXCELLENT. As was then having the beast dumped on him. That was some great fusing of DB and DBZ era style humor into one big moment.

I think Whis making sport of Broly, and Beerus sensing things were chill, and that he could continue hanging with Bulla, were perfectly fine ways to handle both characters. They're deities. Even though they've started to uber-mingle with our heroes, they still are suppose to be hands off more often than not. I appreciate both of their minor roles here...

… and it's still an army more than G O H A N got! Just having Gohan sit by Piccolo while the main men practices the fusion dance, would have been nice. Having him offer an observation he obtained through super image training or something would have also been nice. But, err... maybe next time?

Anyway, I still wanna talk about BROLY himself, but that's much more than enough for one post. Goku's parting words were REALLY odd feeling for him, but I definitely appreciate them. Calls back to his mom asking him to never forget them, actually. I've never seen a DB movie that felt set up such a complex future. SSG and SSB both felt much more like steps to 1 more story. This movie felt like it gave the series years of potential direction. It actually made me feel as happy to see as Transformers the Animated Movie. It matured it's base work in a way that was better explained and explored than I expected from the franchise, and that feels pretty shocking after all these years.

I need to watch this again just because the animation direction was so damn good.
Even Naotoshi Shida and Ryo Onishi's parts were rivaled by some of the insane stuff they pulled in this film.

I can't stop thinking about the "first person" scene.

Me and a buddy brought our wives who knew nothing about Dragon Ball.

It was very fun to explain "Ok, so there are two ways to fuse into one person: dancing or earrings."

Oh my god THE ART in this movie... So many gorgeous frames. I love the somewhat sketchy look to the linework.

Thing I was curious about most going in was Vegeta learning the Fusion Dance in such a short time span and that part did not disappoint.

Goku vs Broly was #1 for me, largely due to that soundtrack. KAKAROT!!! That song and the Gogeta vs Broly song is going to get major roatation.

Gogeta vs Broly would be #2, then Vegeta vs Broly in a close third. I didn't like how that fight just ended, but it was great otherwise

Easily Vegeta VS Broly.

As I mentioned above, this felt more like something you'd see in the old Street Fighter motion picture. Not as realistic, sure, but much more about well-explained, proper motion, strategy, and letting things get through with nuance, rather than smacking the viewer over the head bluntly.

GokVS Broly FPS just felt like a way to try and sell a VR experience to me.
Freeza VS Broly was like a fun intermission. It said the same to the audience as it said to Frieza: Want to have a REAL fight? Then make sure it's Saiyan VS Saiyan!
Gogeta VS Broly I wanted more out of. He didn't name his moves, he didn't show off by using just one arm or anything... but his moves were fairly interesting. He was a good power-up for the story, but the failed form Veeku and Failgeta forms probably seemed more... exciting as characters?

I was happy to see a Fusion not lose because of it's own time out, for what seems like the first time in DB history. The wish to get Broly out was... poorly thought out, but I guess it's the best to do, to allow Broly to exist with some potential character growth.

The animation was beyond incredible, and the fights were an absolute spectacle.

Outside of that it was...kinda dull. It was overall a fun action nostalgia trip, but it felt overly safe in a lot of ways.

If I had one main complaint, I wish Broly got to be more of a character during the fight itself. Really wish he would've come back to his senses, at least to some extent, during the fight (best place would probably be right when he goes Super Saiyan because of his dad dying)

Yeah, it was a cool moment, but from that point forward, I just couldn't keep up anymore or make out a lot of it and it was just blurs and noise, which was why the Vegeta/Broly fight worked best for me because it was the complete opposite of that.
