Honestly this. Attributing certain negative traits to 'just gamers' is narrow-minded as fuck. Its not the internet, its humanity. this is just how humanity is and i hate it.
I feel the trick isn't to not care about issues that are important, but rather to recognize that the majority of negativity and toxic stuff online is out of our hands and not worth engaging in. Instead there are ways to channel our time and energy to issues we care about in more productive ways. Making a difference in a tangible way even in a small community can feel great. Volunteering at a local program helps people you can see and relate to, and makes you feel better too. Arguing or being distressed about toxic stuff on the internet? Not so much. It's a losing battle for personal mental health.
This is no different in any other kind of community. Be it movies, smartphones, Cars, sports or whatever. You have these kind of people everywhere and i don't think it makes sense to single out gaming.
you can't say anything these days without upsetting someone. i'm not out to upset people or anything. shit i don't care how you feel or what you believe in. do or be whatever makes you happy but c'mon....it feels like people want to be offended just to cause trouble. All I can say is that there are certain truths that cannot be spoken without "offending" someone or some group, and getting yourself labeled as.....whatever name suits the general hate that is growing around the world. We are living in very twisted times and I fear it's only going to get worse.
My bad. I wrote that right before going to sleep. The American part has no significance. Why in the world are you only singling out American men?? That makes no sense.
You think Russian men are better? Saudi Arabian men? Chinese men??
How are Americans worse?

For the past few months, I've just grown more tired and tired and tired of the gaming community. After over a decade of putting up with some of the toxic nonsense that gaming produces, It's just gotten too much for me and after this weekend, I'm pretty much done.
I'm just sick of it, I'm sick of the reviewers getting harassed and 8.8 controversies, I'm sick of the sheer amount of gate keeping, elitism and fan wars over every single little thing and the sheer petty "victories". I'm sick of the constant toxic abuse people get on sites like Gamefaq for asking for help or advice (why do they still call that sight Gamefaq?), I'm sick of places like 4chan. Kotaku in Action and r/Kappa allowed to exist and treated with normality. I'm sick of the casual racism, ableism, sexism and homophobia, I'm sick of the video pundits treating their opinions as "objective fact" and further encouraging the toxicity like MovieBob and Yahtzee. I'm sick of being made miserable or getting tons of hate for liking/not liking a game (both on the internet and offline) and plus with some other personal issues about gaming, I'm sick of all of it.
And after this weekend where the very worst of the fighting game fandom came out with their sexism, "core values" memes and "This will piss of the SJWs, I'm buying the game!" and so much else, besides being completely done with the competitive fighting game community, I just feel done with the gaming community.
Has anyone else been feeling this way or has felt like this in the past? How did you deal with the feelings of frustration? Do you feel that the gaming community can be changed or you'd feel better by just staying away from gaming communities for a while?
Also I'd like to say thank you to the users over at the Why Women Criticize Sexualized Character Designs thread for being super cool the past weekend.

Damn. It's sad how true this is. I miss the days when internet was a luxury and not something people depended on.Insecure people are toxic. Group think validates. Many people on Internet are alone, miserable and would rather drag you down with them.
Just ignore. Don't participate.
Era Gaming Forum section is there with the worst communities and reading it only brings frustration. It's overflowing with petty discussions, console warring, justifying review bombing (because developers are evil and lazy and gamers are always right, that's what people on here think), mocking people that like one game because it supposedly is trash and goes against Era's general consensus (example Crackdown 3, or even FF XV). But mods do a good job so most people learned to keep it quiet.
Gaming hangouts part of Era is safe from this. There, in the different OTs, people genuinely seem to enjoy games they play and only discuss about games helping others and giving their opinions about what they like or don't like about games, almost always respectfully.
This is a bit disingenuous.
Era can certainly be pretty bad true, but it is no where near ANY of the worse communities.
Snobbery is perhaps the worst thing on here. Some other communities have so many flavors of toxicity it is unreal.
Absolutely this. I have other hobbies, I have discussions elsewhere, it's not nearly as bad as with gamers. Gaming is very corporate, very marketing driven, very angry (just how many gaming youtubers do the "angry" shtick!?), very vindictive, very juvenile to be honest. It's just disingenuous to say these traits are present to the same degree in every single community.I know why people say and think this. There's a measure of truth to it. But there's also degrees to which different communities have said people. I have hobbies outside of gaming, hobbies that are just as competitive (from both the user and company perspective), and hobbies that have just as much online presence with hundreds of different insular groups and forums. I have been able to find both ends of the spectrum in my other hobbies with relative ease. I can find places that are positive, welcoming, and encouraging. I can also find places that are full of negativity, immaturity, and assholes.
But the difference is that I have yet to find a single gaming community that isn't just as bad or worse than here. And even this forum is constantly bombarded with the exact type of bullshit that drives people like myself and the OP away from the community. The tribalism over products, the bullying into (or out of) certain products, the complete willful naivety of how anything within the industry they dedicate insane numbers of hours into actually works - while simultaneously having callous criticism over every little perceived slight by "developers".
So, yes, there's "these kinds of people everywhere", but I honestly can't find a single fucking community for gaming that actually likes just playing games without all the extra bullshit. And I can find places like that in my other hobbies fairly easily. So it's not exactly the same. Gaming culture and community, for whatever reason, seems to have a widespread love-hate relationship for gaming itself.
Getting more tired of the negativity for sure. Resetera feels less and less healthy.

You only have so many fucks to give, choose where you spend them wisely.
The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck
Well, this place was pretty pleasant for a couple months after the move, but yeah it's quickly becoming like the last place. Which isn't surprising I suppose.
