Why is there controversy surrounding CD Projekt Red and Cyberpunk 2077?

CD Projekt Red has a history of transphobia. This is well documented at this point and not a matter of debate. Due to this context there is particular concern about transphobic or insensitive content in Cyberpunk 2077 itself, such as the decision to tie gender to voice in the character creator, and trans fetishization in illustrations in the game—and these are just examples from prerelease footage. Additionally, there have been concerns about racist imagery and stereotyping. This article goes into depth about some of these issues.

What incidents of transphobia have occurred surrounding the game and the company, and why are they hurtful?

This list will be updated over time as more examples come to light, especially as the game releases and more content is uncovered. If you wish to have something added to this list, please send me a DM and get my attention.

Why is ResetEra allowing an official thread for this game?

There has been a lot of discussion about whether there should even be an official thread for Cyberpunk 2077, and many points of view were considered for this decision. Ultimately, a thread like this can serve as a platform for minority concerns to be aired and discussed respectfully, and given appropriate attention. We've also heard from minority members, including some trans members, who have asked for a space where they can talk about the game without needing to worry about trolling and bigoted posting. We expect all posters in the thread to extend the consideration and empathy to give them that space. We will be moderating as strictly as necessary to make sure they do.

What can I do to help fight transphobia?

Transphobia exists in many aspects of our lives. From casual discrimination such as the continuous misuse of a person's preferred pronouns, to more serious ramifications such as housing being denied, legal rights being taken away, and being discriminated in the legal system. Every trans person either has experienced transphobia in their lives, or will experience transphobia at some point.

Moreover, transphobia is a systematic issue that is present in every level of our society. Politicians fight to take away our rights. Celebrities use coded language and religious justifications, if not outright hostility, in order to continue to deny our existence. Media continues to portray us as the butt of a joke, or acts like we're something to be fascinated by, rather than treated with respect.

Actions speak louder than words: Become active in your local politics, donate to transgender causes, stand up for these issues wherever they arise, and if you know transgender people in your life be there for them and support them.

Here are some pro-trans organizations around the world where you can make a donation and show your support
  • For those of you in the US, The Trevor Project is one of the leading LGBT organizations. They are dedicated to crisis intervention and suicide prevention for people who are in need of support, love, and care.
  • For those of you in the UK, Mermaids is dedicated to the support of transgender, non-binary, and gender-diverse children, young adults, and their families. They have been around since 1995, and have been one of the most vocal voices speaking out against transphobia in the UK, including showing the dangers that transphobia imposes upon our youth.
  • If you would like to donate to CDPR's native country of Poland, you can find the Trans-Fuzja Foundation website here. The Trans-Fuzja Foundation has been around since 2008, and is dedicated to the support of transgender people in Poland in many aspects of life and society, including politics.
We are your friends. We are your family members. We're your coworkers. We're the people you meet on the street. We're the essential workers who keep society running in a pandemic. We're everywhere. We're not some sort of freak or joke, and we're not going away.

I want to give major thanks to Uzzy for lending her talent, time, and effort in putting together graphics and material for this official thread. Without her, this would not have been possible on such short notice. I would also like to give a shout out and thanks to Kyuuji for allowing me to use images and links from her own thread for this posts.

Im sorry but even with sharpening filters I still think the really good graphics are ruined by a below average IQ.
Which is a shame because TW3 on PC was so clean.
But in CP its blurry, lots of Aliasing and alot of bloom that I cant disable. At least in the desert it makes alot of details disappear.
Also its grainy (film grain is off) especially on shiny surfaces.

I wish they would add AA options.

The Witcher 3's anti aliasing option was worse than useless.

Yeah, I played on PC but what I've seen from the last gen console gameplay, CP2077 there is in an entirely unacceptable state. I guess Sony finally caved to the refund / CS pressure.

As a friend said, turns out that when your entire 'refund' process is to say no, enough pressure can make that buckle. Sony are quite happy to sell unplayable games to you and deny you refunds other times, but clearly enough people overwhelmed the system.

Cyberpunk 2077 Story Choices Guide

A guide for all Cyberpunk 2077 Story Choices. This shows all alternate outcomes, mission paths, mission endings and important dialogues.

The guide says that 98% of dialogue options in the game do nothing to change the story and at most change only the next line of dialogue.

The "Beat on the Brat" fights are so cheap. You parry their blows and you still get hit by like a third of your health while you barely scratch them.

I think people playing the game with a pad are suggesting the gameplay is clunky, not the majority of keyboard/mouse players.

The game plays like shit with a pad.
I play on PC with a controller and it feels fine to me. I usually play PC FPS with m/kb but for some reason I really like playing cyberpunk with a controller.

I have never been a big fan of GTA or RDR but can admire what they accomplish. Playing Cyberpunk is making me realize just how amazing the systems running behind those games are. I definitely have some newfound appreciation for Rockstar

Credits are still rolling.. (been 36 minutes already jeez!) Loved this game so much.

I didn't have subtitles on and the ending I got kinda confused me:

So I went a full Johhny route, I gave him control and he and rogue went to the tower. And then at the end with Alt, she tells me V can not be saved. Then Johnny is like yes he can and you can join Alt when you walk across the bridge, but V fights you and is mad at you. Shouldn't he be happy? The other option was the well (I didn't even see the well option anywhere) which means taking full control of V's body. Did I mistake something here? After all this V is back alive but says he'll die in a few months and sets off to space to rob the casino which seems like a super fun set up for the first expansion. But yea just wondering if I mistook something before that.

Can anybody explain? I'm just a bit confused on it lol.

Quoting myself again for visibility! Thread moves fast.

damn they really frontloaded the game with the most detailed quest in order to make people expect the rest of the game to have that level of fidelity. disappointing.

I mean just on the panam quests which are later in the game this isn't true, so...

Afaik just in terms of the endings there's things with Judy, panam, and Johnny in a certain way and most of that is not at the beginning of the game.

But yeah if you break down literally all of the dialogue options in a game like this I guess that isn't really surprising? I dunno. Witcher 3 endings I bet are about 2% of the quest dialogs in the game. Same goes for lots of games. This much dialog what do you expect exactly?

There's a few story threads that matter as far as endings. Did you expect like 15 different endings? Especially with these production values I'm not sure exactly what you expect.

This is very much a story/quest driven game. If you don't like the main story and quests then yeah the game isn't for you. Same goes for literally any other SP game. RPGs generally have a few different endings which CP has, so what did you expect exactly?

I suspected as much. This is actually really gross. Add it to the pile I guess.

So I'm sitting at the "point of no return" but I'm only like level 36. Is that normal? I still have plenty of side missions I want to do, though.

I dont understand the "turn cameras/turrets friendly", it says they will target the enemies and not you but you cant make the turrets shoot people for some reason, and you cant manually take control of them like the cameras.

I love the credits at the end
with all the characters and how things change following how you handled their quests.

How do I get Johnny's friendship? Doing the Chippin' In questline?

Yeah that's almost certainly needed. I'm not totally clear on exactly how to get the secret ending, but generally I'd advise don't be a dick to him, don't try to block him out with the pills, be understanding in your dialogue choices etc.

You can take over turrets through nearby laptops

Be warned, NPCs will both respond to the turret and try to locate you at the laptop while you're on it

They target people you're in combat with. If they're not hostile to you they won't. At least that's how it's meant to work.

I'm pretty sure I've got the option to manually control turrets, not sure where that's come from. Might be a perk or my cyberdeck, checking now.

I never took the pills, but I've been a bit of a dick to him lol. I told him I'd let him kill Smasher though, so hopefully that's enough.

every game that claims "your choices matter"

Ok show me one then where it's broken down into a percentage of VO dialogue that matters like this.

Even then it needs to be a big ass game with serious ending cinematics for each ending otherwise it's kind of a moot point.

Like iirc ME, kotor, fallout, witcher, lots and lots of rpgs with choices ultimately boil down to a few key choices as far as endings go. Like the guides for endings for those I don't see much of a difference as with CP. So what are we complaining about exactly?

Ok so still waiting then. Seems like a big old let's analyze how many story choices matter in 40-50 hours of dialog and oh my God only 2% matter? Has another game even been analyzed like this?
It's the fact that virtually all dialogue choices are funneled, not that 2% effect the endings. You must have noticed this as you play.

This is not what anybody expected from this game.

I wish there was a way to disable just the player shadow (maybe there is and I'm missing it). The shadow always being bald for me regardless of V's chosen hair and just the way it awkwardly animates with movement are just really distracting to me. It feels like I'm seeing someone else's shadow following me around (it's a bit unintentionally creepy lol). And it's to the point I'd rather just pretend V doesn't cast a shadow for some arbitrarily created reason.
Maybe it gets fixed at some point, but I imagine this probably a low priority issue for them with the volume of other stuff they need to fix.

R* is probably the best and most important video game studio in the world.
The skills, the craftmanship and capabilities they have are pretty much unmatched in the industry.
