Why is there controversy surrounding CD Projekt Red and Cyberpunk 2077?

CD Projekt Red has a history of transphobia. This is well documented at this point and not a matter of debate. Due to this context there is particular concern about transphobic or insensitive content in Cyberpunk 2077 itself, such as the decision to tie gender to voice in the character creator, and trans fetishization in illustrations in the game—and these are just examples from prerelease footage. Additionally, there have been concerns about racist imagery and stereotyping. This article goes into depth about some of these issues.

What incidents of transphobia have occurred surrounding the game and the company, and why are they hurtful?

This list will be updated over time as more examples come to light, especially as the game releases and more content is uncovered. If you wish to have something added to this list, please send me a DM and get my attention.

Why is ResetEra allowing an official thread for this game?

There has been a lot of discussion about whether there should even be an official thread for Cyberpunk 2077, and many points of view were considered for this decision. Ultimately, a thread like this can serve as a platform for minority concerns to be aired and discussed respectfully, and given appropriate attention. We've also heard from minority members, including some trans members, who have asked for a space where they can talk about the game without needing to worry about trolling and bigoted posting. We expect all posters in the thread to extend the consideration and empathy to give them that space. We will be moderating as strictly as necessary to make sure they do.

What can I do to help fight transphobia?

Transphobia exists in many aspects of our lives. From casual discrimination such as the continuous misuse of a person's preferred pronouns, to more serious ramifications such as housing being denied, legal rights being taken away, and being discriminated in the legal system. Every trans person either has experienced transphobia in their lives, or will experience transphobia at some point.

Moreover, transphobia is a systematic issue that is present in every level of our society. Politicians fight to take away our rights. Celebrities use coded language and religious justifications, if not outright hostility, in order to continue to deny our existence. Media continues to portray us as the butt of a joke, or acts like we're something to be fascinated by, rather than treated with respect.

Actions speak louder than words: Become active in your local politics, donate to transgender causes, stand up for these issues wherever they arise, and if you know transgender people in your life be there for them and support them.

Here are some pro-trans organizations around the world where you can make a donation and show your support
  • For those of you in the US, The Trevor Project is one of the leading LGBT organizations. They are dedicated to crisis intervention and suicide prevention for people who are in need of support, love, and care.
  • For those of you in the UK, Mermaids is dedicated to the support of transgender, non-binary, and gender-diverse children, young adults, and their families. They have been around since 1995, and have been one of the most vocal voices speaking out against transphobia in the UK, including showing the dangers that transphobia imposes upon our youth.
  • If you would like to donate to CDPR's native country of Poland, you can find the Trans-Fuzja Foundation website here. The Trans-Fuzja Foundation has been around since 2008, and is dedicated to the support of transgender people in Poland in many aspects of life and society, including politics.
We are your friends. We are your family members. We're your coworkers. We're the people you meet on the street. We're the essential workers who keep society running in a pandemic. We're everywhere. We're not some sort of freak or joke, and we're not going away.

I want to give major thanks to Uzzy for lending her talent, time, and effort in putting together graphics and material for this official thread. Without her, this would not have been possible on such short notice. I would also like to give a shout out and thanks to Kyuuji for allowing me to use images and links from her own thread for this posts.

There's something I keep thinking about as I play this game and read about it online.

With the Witcher games, they were clearly building off foundations they'd become familiar with, in terms of mechanics, art, lore, and quest design. Each game is a third-person action RPG with similar (fundamentally) combat etc.

Cyberpunk 2077 is so radically different to every game that has so far made them famous: it's first person, features a more complicated, populated open-world with modern population density and technology, cars etc. It's also entirely different combat, cutscene direction, driving etc etc.

I'm not trying to say "cut them some slack", rather it's so bizarre how they've fallen prey to their own skyrocketing fame and popularity. It's just so interesting that the hype-machine has basically ignored the truth this whole time: this studio has never made a GTA/Deus Ex-style shooter and now it's out and even hardcore fans are disappointed. Like why lean in to this hype knowing the state the game was in, and would no doubt release in?

I guess they're laughing all the way to the bank.

It really feels like the AI is just not equipped to handle a player using combat hacks while stealthed. They stand in a circle and gawk at their dead friends while being slowly burned and shocked to death.

Maybe, _maybe_ when there's one or two left they'll start actively hunting for me, but it's pretty rare.

Alright.. I stupidly equipped a "Special" slot suit and now I can't unequip it and it's very frustrating. It totally changed my characters look, including hair. I hate that hats and suits change hair. It's dumb.

Answered your own question.

CDPR tries to position itself as the quintessential "pro-consumer" developer (and publisher), but only because that is their strategy to maximize profitability. At the end of the day, they're still a publically-traded company with a fiduciary duty to maximize shareholder value.

Hats being armor without a hide option may be the dumbest thing I've seen, especially since wearing a hat makes you bald in any mirror.

All of the 'named' NPC character side missions have, by and large, been on par with good/great Witcher 3 quests, IMO - it's just a shame there's relatively so few of them compared to all the fixer gigs - some of which are okay, but nowhere near as many.

Both Judy and Panam's quests have been really good at selling both their character and their relationship with V - just digging into River's now.

nequip it and it's very frustrating. It totally changed my characters look, including hair. I hate that hats and suits change hair. It's dumb.

Unless it's for a quest, you should be able to unequip any one-sie type suit, IIRC?

Yep, and I guess that's the difference between a studio starting out with their first game and a studio who's known for making genre-defining blockbusters.

Crazy what can happen in 13 years.

Also, unintentionally, they become full circle to me as I first heard of them for doing that shoddy pc port of Saints Row 2, another open world game.

I downloaded the game on PC last night. I've got a 2080ti, NVMe drive and a great CPU. The game defaulted to the highest settings at 4K and frame-wise it ran fine.

I went through the character creator and entered the game. The game just looks... meh? Based on all the coverage I've seen, the actual game running isn't visually impressive. It was so strange. Maybe I've got a rendering issue, but I was so unimpressed by the graphical fidelity.

I also found the game camera and mouse control sluggish at any graphics setting. It was horrible.

I played for 30 minutes and requested a refund on steam. Weird game.

Apart from crashes, it's working really well on PS5.

what did you expect the game to be and what did you find the game to actually be?
Good question. So I stayed away from almost all coverage of this once the trailer dropped at the Xbox E3 conference a few years back. I knew I was going to get it because it was a CDPR game. My expectation was that this was going to be an RPG-heavy game with tons of different ways of handling quests, and loads of character customization.

What the game turned out to be, for me at least, is an open world action/adventure title with RPG elements. This took some time to get used to however, but once I stopped trying to look at this as "Cyberpunk Witcher" and instead embrace it for what it is, I'm having a blast. I'm really liking the missions and how they are tying together with V. Still have a number of problems with the game (lack of diverse things to do in the world, obvious bugs/crashes, etc.) but I can say that the pros are outweighing the cons.

Gotta say , despite some glitches and some niggles here and there Im genuinely enjoying this world. Usually Id be pretty bored of the open world design 25 hours im but the sheer density of the world and the detailed side missions are keeping me interested and wanting more. Plus I think Im now starting to get to grips with my own specialisations in combat so really starting to enjoy myself in the combat.

I've played a while now on PS5, until Keanu shows up, and yeah. Technically this is a mess. I've had 4 crashes, a mission progression stuck until I reloaded, a key enemy frozen... That said I quite enjoyed what I've played. I'm a sucker for cyberpunk but the game's been great so far. Just minus the technical bull shit...

I'm tempted to shelve this for now until the game is more stable or the PS5 upgrade comes out.

I stopped doing the main quest for now and just started doing random quests I see on the map and it's been great. The sense of discovery is pretty nice finding what doors, buildings, and roofs you can climb and just found out you could go where Regina has her base and the view in it is amazing.

Sucks the random walking npcs are useless and driving npcs are dumb but I honestly don't really notice it much if I'm mostly going from point A to B or just trying to find different hallways

Too bad it's so buggy on other platforms cause the game is pretty fantastic so far and I know the main missions are going to elevate this opinion too.

This was basically why I was never that hyped for this despite The Witcher 3 being my favourite game ever. It's mostly irrelevant to me for predicting the quality of this game given CDPR have never made a first person game, no experience with FPS mechanics or driving physics. I wasn't going to put blind faith into this being amazing based on games that have very little to do with what they're going for here like so many other people seemed to.

after moving to my monitor which is 1440p and a 27 inches. It definitely looks much more inviting than on my big 55 inch OLED.

Guess, I'll stick my PS5 here for now as i cannot stand how blurry the game looks on my big screen.

Yeah, I'm playing on a monitor and I'm not affected by the blurriness other players talk about. Lucky me, I guess.

Wow, so Ray-Traced Lighting seems to be the biggest performance killer in this game. Shadows and reflections don't have anywhere near as much of an impact, so with RTL off and everything set to High and Ultra (no Psycho) and DLSS set to Quality, my frame rate does not drop below 60fps in the more congested city areas. Having RTL on even the medium setting completely tanks the frame rate to the mid to low 40s though and the actual impact it has on the visuals is extremely low compared to all of the other options. I keep looking at the before and after screens, and yeah, there's a difference but the improvement does not translate to making the world more immersive than with it off, because it already looks good with it off.

I'm surprised how often I discover alternate entry points to buildings that I'm currently sneaking around in.
Yeah one of the earliest gigs I had, the easies way to do it was to bust in through a door that I didnt have the ability to do... But I was like wtf that doesnt make sense this is so early why would they do that to me? I poked around and realized I could like... scale the side of the building and bust into the room. Solidified my attempt at doing stealth/tech in this game over just brute force stuff (tho some stuff I feel like Im running into a wall of just not having enough body or similar to actually complete because stealth isnt an option... I'm still early i guess so we'll see how that goes).

Still very cool

Having a great time playing this on Series X. Opted for Quality Mode (CA/Film Grain off) after the latest update and genuinely happy with how everything looks and plays (although I would prefer a solid 60fps). Somewhere into Act 2 and haven't suffered a single glitch or crash.

I was under no illusion that this, like Witcher 3, would be a work in progress when it released, and I have full faith in CDPR to keep refining and expanding upon the game. Looking back after the next-gen patches and years of additional content, I think this will be fondly remembered (the game, not the completely fucked and inexcusable situation surrounding the game's development).

I recommend parkouring around the city, it's really fun finding a new vantage point to snipe someone on a quest or enemy base. This aspect can definitely make it feel more sandboxy.

My outfit is hilariously bad right now. It's early Fallout 3 levels of bad, when you're just scrounging random piece of armor that give you the highest rating. Are there any good armor sets you guys recommend? Ideally something that's somewhat aesthetically pleasing and provides an adequate level of protection?

I'm surprised how often I discover alternate entry points to buildings that I'm currently sneaking around in.
I've noticed the same thing since taking more of a stealth approach to fights. It's really cool to see.

Spoilers about what happens during The Pickup job.

The first time I went to get The Flathead from Maelstrom, I didn't bring any money with me. I turned down the malware-infected money from the Millitech executive. So I killed Royce and blasted my way out. But the second time I tried it I saved up 10K of my own money plus I took the infected cash from Millitech. I gave Millitech's money to Royce, but I cleaned the virus, first. And I warned him that Millitech was on to him. Now Millitech just showed up and instead of killing the Maelstrom, I'm teamed up with them. This is way cooler, I'd rather have the crazy cyborg militants as my friends than help Millitech.

I wish they could refine and fix their business culture, work practices and scummy marketing. And maybe do some training on diversity.

That ain't gonna get patched any time soon, I suspect.

100%. I have faith in the bulk of their 'hope-to-god-not-exploitative-and-transphobic-pieces-of-shit' technical staff to deliver a strong product; I have zero faith in their corporate culture and detest everything about it.

Obviously it's all to taste, but I would watch the Digital Foundry settings video they put out, they actually think lighting is the most critical RT setting to keep, followed by reflections. They say shadows probably aren't worth keeping on for the performance cost.

Honestly, some of the side content is pretty fun. I'm surprised by how much of it has voice acting / story tidbits.

Even the mechanically simple ones like the Regina gigs in the first district all have some context to them.

Ok finally settled on settings and performance for my first playthrough, the goal... 60 FPS lock with all the eye candy the game has to offer (excluding Psycho settings, we're not there yet hardware-wise).

Specs:
- Ryzen 5 5600X @ stock
- 16GB RAM 3200MHz
- 3080 with slight undervolt.
- SATA SSD

Playing on Ultrawide 2560x1080 with the following settings/tweaks:

RTX Ultra preset.
- Film Grain OFF.
- Chromatic Aberration OFF.
- DLSS Quality.
- AMD CPU thread fix (Did the exe edit first then downloaded the nexusmods file that was listed here).
- 20% sharpening filter through NVCP (This costs about 5 FPS on my setup).
- 60 FPS lock with RTSS.

Results:
60 FPS lock with superb image quality (better than just DLSS Quality with the sharpening filter), I'm getting no hitching and no frametime fluctuations, If there have been drops it's been maybe 2-6 FPS only but with GSYNC I don't see/feel them. Playing with a controller and It's been a smooth ride so far, wish there was more aim assist though I suck at aiming with a controller.

I'm really happy with the performance and the game is a looker, I stop every corner and dialogue just to take screenshots. For my second playthrough I will be using DF recommended settings with M&K and a 80 FPS lock, between that and hopefully patches that will be attainable.

Anyone with a 3070 can give me tips for getting good raytracing performance at 1440p? I care mostly about the raytraced reflections since, you know, cyberpunk.

I don't feel comfortable aiming with a mouse unless the game is running around 80 FPS or more...
