I may be wrong on this, but based on the number of times I've encountered this situation I don't think I am.
McDonald's has frequently (like more than 10 times) told me to "pull up because my <insert item> is cooking."
That leads me to believe that not only is this common, but it may actually be McDonald's policy to clear the line when an order isn't already in the little chute/warmer.
