The downside with Amazon is that they don't always put their movies up on Prime. At least not in europe.
Oh that's odd. I think everything is on Prime in the USA.
This could be very tricky to pull. Not only with licensing (they only have licence for Sapkowski's books, the stuff included in games are CDPR property), but there is the other elephant in the room. Considering that author of novels was hired as a consultant, it's hard to say if he even agree to doing this in the first place. Mildly speaking, he has some "mixed" opinion about the fact that The Witcher is more known as a gaming franchise and is not generally associated as a product based on novels. His final book that was released few years ago - Season of Storms altered ending in a way that is harder to connect his story with games. I don't know if they would even do that thing in the series (I personally wasn't a fan of that novel), but Geralt was in a completely different place than he was at the end of The Witcher 3.
I mean, the covers of his books now literally look like covers for the games, and he's supposedly badgered constantly by dipshits who think he writes tie-ins instead of being the original source material. He could be about a thousand times less egotistical than he is, but I could see why that might annoy an author.

Maybe in his mind (and knowing how highly he seems to think of himself), this is an opportunity to do something new with the Witcher in a multimedia format and establish himself in the way GRRM, Tolkien or others are known around the world.

The triple-whammy of Bright, Cloverfield, and Mute is definitely a bad look for Netflix. But let's not forgot that they just put out Mudbound, which is considered one of the best films of last year. Gerald's Game and Okja are both fantastic and relatively recent too. Generally though, I do agree that Amazon reigns supreme in the film side of things. I prefer Amazon's release model too. Would've been nice to at least have the option of seeing Okja in a theatre.

I haven't seen Mute, but Cloverfield and (to a lesser extent) Bright aren't that bad. Also, they're about to release Annihilation which is by all accounts a hit.

I'm concerned that this seems to be taking place in the game's timeline rather than the books. Triss' inclusion seems to give that away. The games are wonderful, but the overall arc of the story is much looser and it isn't the best entrypoint for the story.

Lauren has said series is about books and wont have anything to do with games.

Is she the showrunner? Because if so, that's pretty freaking awesome. Seems like she knows her stuff. And I'd really rather have Yen and Triss be written by a woman.

Aaaaaaah shit, we gonna see some vampire action with Regis and Vilgefortz in there. That'll be fun to watch.

I wish the game characters were in there but I am ok with that. I would love to see Roche or Jacques de Aldersberg on screen.

If she already has descriptions for Leo Bonhart, she really is planning to go all the way with the book plot. Bonhart also means they'll likely include Ciri's band of malcontents!

Can't wait to see my boy Regis, hopefully he's as well done here as he was in the Witcher 3.

This sounds faithful as hell. This could be a real winner if Netflix gets a quality production out of them.

Clearly the show is based heavily on the books with that character list. That's good, and it sounds like she understands the characters very well.

It'll be interesting to see how they handle the Geralt/Yen push-and-pull, depending on where in the books they end up placing, especially with seemingly incorporating Triss' thirst for Geralt. Though to be fair, it's not like the trope is unheard of, I suppose.

Lol @ the Roach description. I hope they give her some a few good bits.

That's fair I guess. Maybe Amazon appeals to my tastes more in terms of series.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is probably the hit show right now from them.

They have other shows with pretty good reception like Goliath, The Man in the High Castle, Mozart in the Jungle, Red Oaks, Transparent and a few others.

The movies they've picked up for distribution have been where they shine pretty well though. Manchester by the Sea, The Salesman, The Big Sick, The Lost City of Z, The Handmaiden, Last Flag Flying and Paterson come to mind.

Maybe the Cloverfield mess is coloring my perception of the difference between them, but Amazon seems to have had the smarts to pick up some pretty good stuff.

I'd agree on the movie front, but none of their shows (except maybe The Tick) come anywhere close to Netflix's best for me. As someone who is a big PKD fan I couldn't bring myself to finish Man in The High Castle, and was bored to death by Transparent and Red Oaks.

In general I think Amazon does a better job of licensing other productions, but the shows they actually produce are not on par with Netflix's flagship shows.

I honestly don't think it would be type casting. She's really talented and I'd rather see a talented young actor in the role than a ho-hum newcomer.

I'm just saying you're asking for Maisie to play a young rogue like character when she played literally just that in GoT.

Yeah, about that.... She's generally known for casting ice spells.
Edit: aaand given her backstory, associating her with fire seems, let's say, a tiny bit inappropriate.
I could have sworn she had some fire stuff in the books or did something like that in the games. Of course, I also remember her getting the shits and training Ciri at Kaer Morhen in one of the books, lol.

That doesn't sound like Roach.

Jokes aside, hell yeah! These all (okay, fine, I only read Geralt's, Yen's, Ciri's, and Triss') sound great! Hoping it turns out great.
Can someone edit the OP post to say that JASKIER = Dandellion for the game only crowd?
Oof. Thanks for this. Wouldn't have read his description otherwise.

I'm actually kinda hyped for this - these type of Medieval/Fantasy shows seem to translate well to live-action and it seems like the showrunner is going about this the right way so far.

Sapkowski said in an interview that he isn't and doesn't want to be involved with the making of the show, which makes that consultant credit sound like a formality.

Season of Storm hasn't really altered the ending, the thing it added happens so far in the future, the ending of the game would be a distant memory. In fact, it's easier to tie that epilogue-to-an-epilogue with the video games than it would be to place them in the same continuity as the original book series.

I could have sworn she had some fire stuff in the books or did something like that in the games. Of course, I also remember her getting the shits and training Ciri at Kaer Morhen in one of the books, lol.
The games turned her into a full-time pyromancer, which strikes me as a rather tone-deaf way to adapt a character who was traumatized by the burns she suffered in a devastating battle that defined her personality.

I confused Roach and Roche, and was confused why the description sounded like a woman. Thought they were making Roche a woman in the show.

Though now it doesn't seem like Roche is in it at all.

Roche is a CDPR-created character, so he likely won't show up for a while, if ever. I would imagine we won't see Dijkstra either.

What has Amazon done that's great? Genuinely curious because I don't know of anything besides Transparent that's great from them but I only sub to them intermittently.

Man in the High Castle is pretty good.

I'm hoping they do Jack Ryan well later this year, but they're not adapting any of the Clancy books, so idk how good the story will be.

Wow it really sounds like she gets the characters, and not the surface level we see in the games but the in-depth aspect from the books. Sure sounds like she's a fan of the original work and is doing her best to translate them faithfully to the big screen.

Having read the entire series reading through the character list reminds of so many key scenes and brings back emotions of such tumultuous events. I can't wait, but fear the confusion the masses will inevitably have at the differences from the game.

To be fair, almost all of those character notes rang true for me and I've only played the games, never read any of the books. So I don't think the games only explore the characters at the surface level. Her interpretation of Yen is pretty much EXACTLY what I got out of that character, especially after having Geralt turn her down during the Last Wish quest.

Which I suppose is just a sign of how well-formed all of these characters really are.
