Curious what you do on the Scribe? I've been flirting with a device like this for a while
I am an attorney. I previously used to use big yellow legal pads or my laptop. I prefer writing with pen and paper but you can't really organize all of those legal pads and they take up space. I have mostly been using my leptop but I just don't like the process as much, though I liked the way everything was saved to cloud.

The scribe saves everything I write down so it's a great solution for me. I also use it to make notes for other things. Lists etc. I absolutely love the feeling the fake pencil thing has on the screen. Anything for work is a no brainer but I love it for other things as well

Pretty happy with my Paperwhite but if I wanted to upgrade it seems the regular Kindle would be the move. I don't want a larger screen nor do I care about faster page turns.

does the scribe let you take notes and then later search for words you've written? so many of them seem to be very limited other than literal e-ink versions of physical books. I'd need to be able to search otherwise I'll just stick with paper
I don't think you can search for words. You have to organize your files and folders well (at least that is what I do).

It is reasonably fast in scrolling through pages to find what you want. But if you are not somewhat organized I can see it being a pain to find something.

The copy and past is also pretty primitive. But if you just want to write or take notes and treat it like a glorified digital note pad it's pretty glorious.

Never felt the need for color. I wish my Kindle from 2019 or 2020 would die though so I could justify an upgrade. It's perfectly functional but it's the only device in my life that doesn't have USB-C.

I ended up going with a Kobo Libra Colour and this hasn't moved the needle for me.

Doesn't seem to be available in Canada either.

Losing physical buttons, stylus support, Dropbox/Google Cloud, and built in Overdrive borrowing would be a deal breaker anyway.

Edit: Watching videos it still clearly has the drawbacks of Kaleido.

I upgraded to the Paperwhite when they added USB-C a few years ago, so no need to upgrade yet.

Cool though!

I have that page turner, and it is so nice to be able to place the kindle on a stand and use it for page turns. I use it in bed, on the couch, and recently on an airplane.

I've been wanting a color e-ink display for YEARS now, but looking at the reviews of the Kobo color reader and other colorized e-ink screens, I think it's a little bit early in the tech for me tbh. I'll wait for some reviews and comparisons, but it's nice to see Amazon finally getting into the color game and maybe we will see some tech advancements in the next few years.

I still kinda want one though.

The hands on videos and write ups make it sound like a significant advancement over the Kobo tech already.

I switched to Kobo Libre color earlier this year and Amazon's doesn't inspire regret. The Kobo has buttons like the Oasis and I can write in it to annotate books or use it as a notebook like the Scribe.

I'm thinking about getting one of these. I have a Scribe but it's just a little too big. I feel like 8" would be perfect, but I'd rather have 7" than 10".

And it's lame they have one premium ereader that has a pen, and one with color, but you have to choose between the two. Very odd. Should have just been one model with both and two screen sizes.

Curious what you do on the Scribe? I've been flirting with a device like this for a while

I use mine to highlight and take notes in books, which I've always felt like helps with retention a lot. And I just like handwriting notes, I've taken notes with the keyboard since I got my first Kindle in like 2008, but I far prefer handwriting.

And then I also use it as a notebook. I'll use it to jot down notes while reading a physical book, while taking a Udemy course, etc.

colorsoft sounds cool, i bought the paper white signature last year before a trip and LOVE IT. It literally lasts like a month of active usage on a charge, and its qi enabled too so I can just drop it on one of many charging surfaces I have and its good to go. Super lightweight, I carried it around everywhere and was a great way to kill 15 mins or 2 hours while waiting for stuff. Even now I am sure to take it on doctors appts, car repairs, etc wherever I have to wait around.

The one thing I don't try on the paper white is comics since it looks pretty bad and the screen is maybe too small, but I have a nice lenovo OLED tablet if I ever really want to read that (I rarely do). The color one looks interesting for that but I think the form factor still makes it maybe too difficult still.

Looks like the paperwhite still has the power button on the bottom. I accidentally turn mine off often enough that I'd be tempted to upgrade if they moved it.

Wonder if the Colorsoft is using the Kaleido 3 panel. Almost certainly you would have to imagine, there aren't a lot of volume players in this niche.
They're a good improvement over previous colour e-ink displays, but I feel that a lot of people will be disappointed if they jump in blind as the technology is still in its relative infancy and has a decent number of drawbacks (but also a lot of great improvements!). I do like my Boox device with it though and don't regret it, even if it's still not quite there for things like comics and graphic novels in both colour reproduction, and ghosting & refresh rate (though that is improving with each iteration and is getting there).

Wait, Amazon doesn't sell any current models with page turn buttons? Not upgrading without em.

nah its not. its on their trade in page

The giftcard is also $30 that goes in instantly to your account once you accept the offer.

Oh nice! I didn't realize the discount was open to all Amazon devices. I'm finally going to get some use out this freebie Echo Dot that's been collecting dust.

I preordered the Colorsoft, but I'm already thinking I should hold off and continue waiting for an Oasis refresh. That PPI drop from 300 to 150 when using color is a bit concerning.

Is it basically a sure thing that we'll eventually get an Oasis refresh/upgrade?

Interesting. They look nice, although I have the last Oasis model and none of these really feel like a direct upgrade from that.

Might sound silly, but I mainly love having the page turn buttons on the Oasis.

I want to upgrade my 7 year old Kindle paperwhite to the Colorsoft but considering just leaving ecosystem for Kobo.

Colorsoft is $130 more than the compatible Kobo color reader (Clara, $150), it's only difference is screen is an inch bigger but Colorsoft doesn't take notes or have page buttons like Kobo Libra Color ($220)

Of course it's an Amazon device so it's MSRP isn't what many will pay. $280 is a bit much for me imo even if I do really want the color in my books

That said 20% off with trade in isn't TOO bad. That would bring it down to a more reasonable $224, still think it should've been $220 MSRP

Has the Scribe ecosystem got any better since the first device? I use a Remarkable for on-stage tasks and as an e-reader, but the actual syncing part is pretty crappy, and the lack of a backlight is killing me.

I remember lusting after a Scribe when they launched, but then they got a very lukewarm reception so I stuck with the Remarkable. Obviously I'd prefer a Remarkable Paper Pro, but they're way too expensive.

i read an easy one is "id like to pay to remove the ads", they dont have an option for that so they usually just disable it. i kind of wonder if there is a legal reason behind it

They've always had this option, unless maybe it's not available in your country or something? I've always appreciated this about Kindles, I wish every ad supported device/service had such an easy "pay $20 to never see another ad" system.

No page turning buttons? Come on...

And I was hoping for a Scribe/Oasis with color. Not really interested in a small color e-reader.

Might be the time to finally upgrade my original Paper White, getting pretty slow now.

Assume there will be a new set of covers for this gen compared to the 2022 one? Although the accessories link does take you to those ones currently.

Man, the color does look cool. No idea if they will go on sale for BF but if you trade in your old one and get a sale you can usually nab them for a significant discount.

I've been waiting for a color E ink that was worth it for a long time. E-ink displays are so much better on the eyes. I ended up just going with a tablet for comics/graphic novels. I haven't been keeping tabs on where color E ink was at commercially, but 8 weeks of battery life is very tempting for that use case, plus other reading. That price is a bit steep for a very specific use case I want it for though. One of these days I'll have to demo one in person.

Soooo not to blow up this "secret" but every kindle I buy, I pay the cheaper ad supported model, and then just contact Amazon after and ask to have ads removed and they always do it immediately and for free.

Oh man, is the colour model only for the US right now? Was all set to jump on it but it's not on the Canadian site!

Cool, will likely buy this new Scribe. Normally take notes with my iPad Pro but I've been looking to upgrade my first-gen Paperwhite anyway so why not kill two birds.

280 USD though, will be like 350 CAD i guess

edit : new signature is 230 CAD, no mention of the color
and the kobo clara color is 180 CAD ... seems kobo will get some more love

How soon do I need to send my existing Kindle in if I'm trading it in? I'd like to keep it until the new device arrives ideally but I'd also like to put an order in now. If I have a month to send my device in then that's not too bad. Although will they give me the 20% off immediately or only when they get my device?

Why do ebook readers all look like tablets from ten years ago? I might be interested in one but I can't stand the look of them.

Very cool. I upgraded my paperwhite in 2022 I think, after 8 or 9 years, so I'll be good for a while.
I did the same last year after my old Paperwhite died. By the time I'm ready to upgrade again, the colour tech should be at least a couple of generations further along, with potential improvements and any issues ironed out.

Fundamentally, an ebook reader is a function-over-form device. They could give it slim bezels, probably, but then it wouldn't have a nice large bezel area to allow you to grip it a bunch of ways without accidental touches. They could built it from heavier, more premium materials, but you're meant to be able to hold it one-handed for a long time, so it needs to be as light as possible.

I get that part, but they could still improve on the look quite a bit, the thick plastic edge and overly rounded corners don't look good. Give me a remarkable, or the scribe, in a smaller form factor and I'm sorta in.

Ok that white bezel on the Scribe looks cheap af. Why couldn't they match the off-white shade of the display? Glad they've got rid of the basic/premium pen bs though.

I've moved away from e-readers personally, for whatever reason I've found myself tearing through way more books since picking one up physically on a whim… BUT. A colour device could get me on board. I read those on my phone rn and it's less than ideal
