Via Japan Times:
On Tuesday, the Narcotics Control Department of the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry arrested actor/musician Masanori Taki, 51, for allegedly using cocaine in violation of the drug control law, local media outlets reported. (...)
According to Kyodo News, investigators raided Taki's house on Tuesday afternoon. In a urine test, he tested positive for cocaine, and according to investigation sources, Taki admitted to using cocaine, Kyodo reported.

You might wonder what this is doing in gaming side?

Remember Yakuza 4?

Why would it cause a delay for the US version if it has a dub and the subbed version is already done? Seems like a thing that would impact JPN DLC more than anything else. Bit out of the loop on how these things are handled

They raided his apartment for using coke? Was he selling or moving product? Sounds like guy was just doing lines. Big deal.

Otherwise goddamn Japan.

I dunno, Tanimura was a playable character. I doubt they go that far just for an english localization change.

Watsuki was busted for purchasing and owning child pornography and his character was prominentely marketed with Jump Force so it shouldn't be an issue if the guy was doing coke ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

...right?

Japan is the same country where they put out the vilest content ever yet drugs are something they vilify. Interesting culture. Isn't alcoholism pretty normal over there too?

Oh geez, that's not good. Japan gets super weird when it comes to drug arrests. I remember after a voice actress for the Kill Me Baby (I think) anime got arrested for drugs the stores all stopped selling the series for awhile. I could definitely see some issues arising from this, hopefully it gets ironed out smoothly and there's no delays.

EDIT: This is what I was referring to: https://www.crunchyroll.com/anime-n...-actress-ai-takabe-rearrested-for-cocaine-use

It should be noted that Drug usage in Japan is extremely frowned upon and has harsh legal consequences. While this isn't as much of a big deal in a number western countries, it is in Japan. Even something as simple as marijuana usage can lead to a minimum of a two year prison sentence with a huge fine.

This is part of the reason why the third Pokemon movie short has been removed from circulation, due to the narrator, Noriko Sakai, having been found to have had drugs. It's been over a decade and it's still not available for streaming, video distribution, or television broadcasts. It also destroyed her career for the longest.

You can read about what happened to her on her wikipedia article.

So what lead to Japan having such strong drug laws? This sounds crazy and like it could be easily abused by law enforcement.

Drugs are a big no no in Japan. Should have just stuck to child porn like the Kenshin guy and gotten off with a slap on the wrist instead.

I'd say John Ricciardi, who lived in Japan for years and make a living by localizing Japanese games to English, would be on the side of caution when an actor on a videogame is busted for drug use, however silly that sounded to westerners.

Why the fuck would they recast him ? Who recasts people on the basis that they use drugs in the west ? On something they already done ?

Comparing questionable content to drug abuse is rather weird thing to do.
Also level of alcohol consumption in Japan is much lower than most western countries.

Edit: oh that was a swift ban.

I mean, given his job and life in Japan, Ricciardi would obviously know more than me, but it seems wild to me that something like this would affect the Western release.

also selfishly I hope it doesn't because that was going to be my birthday present to me

What was the guy they replaced in Yakuza in trouble for?
He was in a scandal over allegedly using cocaine, which led to him retiring. It's only speculation that he was removed from Y4's remaster for this reason though. They stated that due to expired contracts and people no longer working in the industry they had to recast certain people, and the hostesses were also recast despite not being involved in similar scandals, but because the actresses that played them had retired.

Bizarre about the home raid and anticipated reaction. Hopefully someday societies won't think someone is evil and should be shunned because they did some drugs.

Yikes, wow. I knew she did something very bad, but I didn't know Japan was this extreme about this sort of stuff either. That's... pretty petty to withhold the short for that long when they could redub it or just let it go. I'm hoping the western launch iof Judgement doesn't suffer from the same situation. :(

Depends on what Sega Japan wants, I imagine.

This isn't just a voice issue. The game uses his likeness. So if Sega wants his likeness out of the game, they could conceivably force that to happen overseas as well because they don't want their game associated with a "heinous" criminal.

When people are saying "what about a possible delay?", they mean that in regards to Sega potentially replacing the character model in all versions of the game. I have no clue if that's gonna happen or not since the game is already out in Japan anyway, but it's really not that crazy.

Most East Asia and South East Asia countries take drug consumption quite seriously.
It's always been surprising to me when it comes to seeing people talk about recreational drugs and the use of it in this forum so freely.

Ooof. I really loved his work for Denki Groove. I fear that the group will disband soon.

If you're curious, Pierre Taki also directed a few games such as Groove Jigoku V and its PSP pseudo sequel Work Time Fun.

Don't know about any game implications i mean Johnny Depp is in multiple KH games now but i don't know what their agencies do with native actors.

Can someone please explain the reasoning behind the thought that this could cause delays in the game's US release ?

Because if they end up removing his voice acting and his character model entirely from the game, that would create a domino effect, I presume.

But the game's already out (in Japan at least) and is pretty much content complete. Going by who this guy plays in the Judgement Wiki page, it seems to be an integral character:

Hamura is self-centered, but he's also a mastermind skilled in taking others down for his own benefit. He's heavily involved with Yagami throughout the serial murder case.

I don't think it would be possible to completely remove him from the game. The best they can do is make the model different like they did with that Assassin character Yakuza 0 for the Chinese version.

I don't think the actor getting arrested in Japan should/would have any ramifications for the game's release in the West.

He's not just an actor for a video game but the front man for the famed electronic duo Denki Groove. Listening to some of their music, I mean, of course he does drugs, not really that big of a surprise.

Well, if he goes to prison, he can't very well finish recording DLC...
What DLC? The game is complete (as in, the Japanese version, all that needs to be added is the dub). And I really hope Sega don't remove him, as he's such a powerful presence in the game that I'd be tempted to never play the English version. It'd ruin it that much for me.

The thing with owning child pornography is a bit different. The drug law is quite old already, while the ban for possession of child pornography was only made in 1999 and it's loophole was changed in 2014, which unfortunately still is quite lax. Junior idol content which isn't outright porn is out there with photobooks and videos of what are pretty much teenagers. So yeah, the law still is quite weak and with some loopholes out there.
