Star Fox Zero felt like a tech demo that was being sold for full price. Nothing about it was good. It was a lesser Star Fox 64 in terms of everything and the game looked shockingly ugly for the hardware. I think Assault and Adventures look better on Dolphin when upscaled to even 720p and they don't have the frequent framerate drops that Zero has to boot.

Star Fox + Platinum should have been a match made in heaven but they screwed it up.

Horrible game.

Would take a pretty massive overhaul to get it to work on Switch.

Star Fox Zero at it's best is a good Star Fox game with levels split into arcadey / Platinum style scoring sections. Far far better than Assault but there are too many slow levels and obviously the gamepad stuff was a bridge too far for a lot of people. When it *is* doing full Star Fox though, brilliant. Get that on Switch.

Poor Wii U. No one wanted to buy you but suddenly everyone wants to play your games.

Star Fox Zero is still one of the best Star Fox games, I pity everyone who didn't enjoy this cause it's so good.
Maybe it's time the franchise was put to bed forever if after more than 25 years Zero is considered one of the best titles, horrible motion controls aside it hadn't moved on from the mid-90s. Kid Icarus and F-Zero would love to have had as many free passes as Starfox has had.

I also have a hard time understanding why so many people hate it so much. I remember enjoying it a lot, and the dogfighting was quite cool with the two screen setup to line up precise shots that otherwise you wouldn't be able to make. Playing coop with one person taking each screen was pretty cool as well.

Also, the special edition came bundled with Starfox Guard, which was also a pretty decent game. That said, Zero would be pretty much impossible to port, and the game was a commercial failure, so a new game would be better

God I really disliked Star Fox Zero. Props to those that enjoyed it but it just did absolutely nothing for me, had more fun with Star Fox Guard in the end.

I think it is cool not to totally devalue the Wii U by porting every single game away.

A Fatal Frame collection would be great as well.

Anyways, this one is pretty interesting since it could be improved by focusing on one screen. As it is, both offer you a different view so you can't really use one or the other, but it could work as a "focus" button if they wanted to keep the other view I guess.

That said, the biggest problem with the game is that they HAD to retread the same story and setting for the third time...

Starfox Zero was like an album with a few classic tracks that belong on a Greatest Hits and a lot of dross you want to skip to get to them.

That's a rubbish album.

I don't know if it would enjoy a second Life on switch in terms of sales. I loved it, but I know I'm in the minority.

Star Fox Zero isn't an exclusive. There's a N64 version. That version was better loved to.

Topic should have been about Xenoblade X

When Star Fox Zero got it right, it got it really right:

Sadly, this is as good as it gets. The rest of the game is... not this game.

I find Star Fox Zero a frustrating game. Sector Omega shows that it could have been a fantastic Star Fox game. The potential was right there. And then they had gyrocopter levels, slow escort missions, and another attempt at making the Walker happen. Because what I really want in a Star Fox game is to transform into a chicken and stand still on top of the enemy ships. ...that or using bombs wisely. Probably the latter.

Games that have everything they need to be good, but just fail at it are more annoying than games that are just outright bad.

I haven't really played a lot of Star Fox titles (apart from this, just 1 and 2), but I had a blast playing it. The controls took a while getting used to, but it felt good fairly quickly. That said, while the game is fun and all, it did feel a bit... hollow? In comparison, I oddly think I liked the spinoff Star Fox Guard even more. But to me Zero was nowhere near as awful as many make it out to be.

I would pay full price for Starfox 64 2, made by Treasure or Platinum Games. That's all I have to contribute to this discussion.

As I recall, it sold very, very poorly. The controls were such that NoE had a horrible time just getting it through their internal QA.

I've only ever heard criticism for the Star Fox game from Nintendo youtubers for it's awful controls. I have no idea if the game is any good or not.

I stand by my statement that this is a fantastic game overall.

The problem is that you literally need to spend hours getting used to the controls. Once the controls "click," it is an amazing experience.

It is just a massive design flaw from a development perspective--one of the worst I've ever seen.

To those who say that Zero's controls are awful, what would you change about them personally? Honestly I don't know how much fun I would have had with it were it not for the gyro which allows you to aim independently of movement, something that was difficult for me to re-adjust to when I replayed 64 afterwards. I know that forced motion controls are taboo for most people, but I think a traditional control scheme would have neutered all the wild stunts you can pull off in this game; independent aiming is a huge game changer for me. It'd be like trying to go back to keyboard controls for Quake after playing with the mouse.
The ability to move and aim independently is not as novel as this game's defenders seem to think. It's been done before, better and without the need for obnoxious motion controls or second screen gimmicks to boot.

They'd still be better off without independant aiming regardless. One of the reasons I prefer Star Fox to games like Sin & Punishment is that your ability to attack isn't disconnected from your position. Like yeah you have to put yourself in harm's way in order to hit the weak point, but that's a good thing! Risk vs reward! Why would you want to make positioning less interesting?

I know Nintendo have made some unpopular marketing decisions lately but if they released this before the other non-switch Wii u games I'd be afraid of the backlash lol.

What? But it had even more boost readily available than 64, or any other game in the series offered, for that matter. If you knew how to play the stages you could absolutely demolish the game flying at high speeds, since the cooldown time is basically gone comparatively. It's one of my favorite improvements over the originals. Once you knew what you were doing, stages become less about waiting for the enemy to come into the line of sight and just a flurry of laser blasts in the sky as you wreck everything you can.

Preach! Loved Zero because of stuff like this. It's a shame that most people will never give it a chance.

I still remember playing the first stage and finding out I could zoom through at high speed while listening to the awesome music and just shouting "holy shit this is the greatest thing ever"
