Those fucking invisible things from STALKER.

The Wampa in the Hoth base in Shadows of the Empire. If you blew up the crates blocking the entrance to its room, it would just wander the entire level. You would turn a corner and it would be right in your face and would one-shot you. Scared the piss out of me as a kid.

Uboa from Yume Nikki:

The Labyrinth Sages, AKA the Madmen, from Bloodborne chalice dungeons aren't terribly creepy in appearance, but the way they run at you is...deeply unsettling:

Yeah, just hearing that music gets me anxious.

For those who are still discussing the lack of caption/label on a few pictures; let's drop it and get back on topic.

Regenerators are wild, man. At that point of the game you've been through the ringer- and like, halfway through the game at least- so you handle any new threat a tiny bit hardened. Then those dudes arrive and you actually gotta stop for a moment and go "Oh. Wait. Yeah. This game's a fucking horror game."

Honestly, Mayday creeped me the hell out.

Playing RE:Rev on 3DS at night with headphones... He got me, lol.

I did this part on SWitch a couple of days ago. That canned audio loop is still in my head each morning when i wake up. Something about that bit was genuinely unsettling compared to the ludicrousness of everything else (so far, im only about half way through).

Mock me all you want, but I'm not in the minority of posters who comment on how lame it is to not post the name of the game. I shouldn't have to do an image search when you can just easily save us the time by typing the name of the game it's from. Some of us are using a phone and don't feel like going through the trouble.

I refuse to do the image search out of principle and a hint of Stubbornness. People who don't bother to write any sort of reference or give context to a picture are discourteous to others. On top of that, the user was actively being discourteous by saying that they outright refuse to do it.

Thank you

Dood, I wasn't mocking you. I was mocking the other guy with your avatar.

Having played through Half Life 2 again recently (thank you BC!), these motherf*cking things creep me out to the bone. The sounds make me jump out of my seat every goddamn time, and still do after 14 years since release. Sheer horror.

From Monster Hunter, there are gross and unsettling monsters like Gigginox and Khezu, but the one that still strikes real fear is Diablos:

latest

This fucker's all fangs and claws, dangerous from all directions with a big, flail-like tail that he'll swipe at you if you try to get behind. Angry hipchecks, dig into the ground and pop out at you like the picture above, hauling ass out of the ground to throw you down.

When they get mad, they start breathing black smoke.

When they yell, it sounds like this:

When their females go into heat, they turn black and get extra evil:

Or the "Deviant" version in Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate, which is fittingly called Bloodbath Diablos:

Fun times.

+1, that roar man. Chills.

"Mayday, mayday, mayyyyydayyyy. This is the Queen Zenobia..." (Resident Evil: Revelations) still sends shivers down my spine.

Edit: Only now saw that someone else posted this as well earlier.

Honestly, Mayday creeped me the hell out.

Playing RE:Rev on 3DS at night with headphones... He got me, lol.

The sounds that the nightmare made in Prey 2017 still haunt me. Especially the louder high pitched scream-like sounds.

My go to example is still this Shibito from Forbidden Siren 2. It still gives me the heebie jeebies just thinking about it:

I would kill for a modern Siren with good controls and an open/semi-open village to explore. The series has some of the best monster designs outside of a From Software game.

Remember the maggot men?

If you're in on it, you're in on it. If you're not, you're not. My post is a half-joke answer from a pretty well known game, and I was careful to choose an image that led me to the correct title in a reverse image search should someone be unaware of it. In addition, Lisa from PT who Voyevoda posted is something of a quickly risen cult icon who doesn't need context.

Just in case you decide to post something like this again in future: this is not a feature all browsers have.

Anima from The Evil Within 2. Doubly so if you're playing on the PS4 and you hear her singing coming from the DS4 speaker and then....

This tall lady in Fatal Frame Maiden of Black Water creeped me out. She doesn't attack you most of the time. But then she does and the way she walks unnerves me so much...

Marguerite from Resident Evil 7:

The way she moves and the weird noises she makes is terrifying. Killing her on the hardest difficulty with limited ammo nearly gave me a heart attack.

I find that the scariness of a video game / enemy is all dependent on how powerful it is relative to the player. Many of the monsters in this thread are defeatable because you're equipped with heavy weaponry to destroy them.

However, the basilisks in DS1 terrify me the most because they can suck away time from your ACTUALLY IRL LIFE. If you're killed by one you've got to go across the map to a guy who sells antidotes and this takes a while.

The resilience of a monster definitely has something to do with it in games with invincible stalkers like Amnesia, and in the case of the imposing behemoths who are SH2's Pyramid Head, A:I's Drone, RE4's Regenerator, and DS' Ubermorph. For a lot of us though on the other end of the spectrum I think the scary factor depends much on just how unusual and repulsive a thing is, like other creatures in SH and Souls. That's what's so fucking awesome about the Xenomorph, imo—it embodies the best of both worlds. The Alien has the physicality of Jason Voorhees and it's as unsightly as Krueger without being too over the top in either category of intimidating.
