Dang, Yoshi's Story is my single favorite stage by some margin, and I don't even play competitively. I'm so glad it's back.

Currently I had a similar thinking as you did but I wonder if we are going to very few free contents between release date and real DLC support begins. We could get a couple of free echo fighters or something like that. Who knows.
I've thought about that too. The format (jumping around, leaving holes in both sides, with the last unseen row having only 8 characters, rather than just following the website order) might have been chosen because they knew there'd be open space and they wouldn't be able to fill everything, so they did it in a way to leave open spaces in both sides.
Attempting to coordinate promotional images and packages featuring the entire cast could just lead to leaks too unless the entire cast gets revealed surprising early (like October).
I don't actually recall Verge stating every veteran would return.

He never did. He only mention everyone from smash 4 comes back along with Snake and Ice Climbers. He never mentions Wolf, Pokemon Trainer, Young Link or Pichu.

If they're gonna keep clustering info I would guess first week of Novembet.
He said that there would be no cuts from Smash 4 and that Snake and ICs would be back. All of that was true. Just because he didn't call/know everyone ever was back doesn't mean he was wrong. It just means he didn't have info that literally everyone was back/didn't know about Pichu, Young Link, Wolf, etc.
Vergeben has never claimed to have comprehensive information. He knew about Simon and Isabelle, but not K Rool or any of the revealed echoes. He supposedly knows about Ken, Incineroar, and a Square rep, but that doesn't mean that is all that's left either.

It's pretty safe to expect a trailer, I don't think we are getting a direct though.
Smash Direct will be in the first half of November (before review copies of the game get out; maybe even before the console bundle releases).

This really needs put out there in that case. Everyone refers to him as the leaker who's claimed most of the correct fighters returning.
No disrespect to the guy, he did get a few right. Like Ridley, Isabelle and Simon. But the Smash fandom is brutal if they get one piece of info wrong

I believe all 3 you've mentioned are going to be announced. I suspect he knows the other Square rep (Geno), but doesn't want to reveal too much in case of Nintendo being onto him.

Pokémon, sure. But the closer we get to the end, the more uneasy I feel about Elma's chances. And like I said early on, I feel like it's Day 1 or never for Elma.
I wouldn't be surprised if Elma was one of the characters sacrificed in favor of bring back all the vets in terms of development time

I think box theory and 103 stages is the safe thing to expect then be excited if they're wrong

I mean, no one really benefits if #teamjust2 wins. The hype will be non-existent if the last two characters are Incineroar and Ken; we've been speculating about them for months.
If Elma got in I'd finally have a new addition to the roster to be happy about and look foward to (other than Simon, I mean).
