I ran my 4S for three years, my 6 for four. I expect the XR will last me for five or longer.

(Which kind of makes me want to get the XS, as the costs will be amortized over that time so the price difference isn't that much, and there's always the possibility of a dark mode boosting the OLED battery life. But we'll see.)

My 6 Plus needs an upgrade. 4 years old now and slow. And it was a replacement of another 6 Plus only about 18 months ago. It's not the unit, it's the model.

I want a new iPhone but I'm not sure about the home button removal. I like the tactile feedback and quick close ability without a gesture. I also don't know if I need a Max, since the XS is close to the screen size of my current Plus. But if we're only talking $100 difference I might as well go Max. Then again, with the Plus, it was slower since all apps have to scale 1.3x or whatever.

These new phones were rumored forever to be a price cut because of poor adoption of the X. That's not the case at all. Sure, the XR, but it's not a premium product. Just not happy all around.

I wouldn't worry about the higher resolution on the Max slowing things down. That was only a problem with the 6 Plus (and iPad 3). Even the 6s Plus didn't suffer that slowdown.

But if you're not sure about giving up the home button and the new devices are too pricey for you, maybe get a used 7 or 8 instead?

I'll likely just do the monthly payment thing, so the price won't be a huge deal. It just bugs me that there were so many reports of price drops and then nothing....

Now I'm hearing Apple is blaming Trump's tariffs

Nah, that's just Apple under Tim Cook, a company ruthlessly dedicated to raising the Average Selling Price. The current-gen MacBook Pro is the worst example of this.

So, I'm under iUP right now but I'm paying it off and almost done with it. One more month actually...weird how the only option for me through the app is to order a XS under iUP but on the website, there is an option to not include Apple care and cheaper payments. I do just want to pay monthly without including Apple Care.

I think that drops you out of iUP onto apple payments. Still 0% but you simply pay the phone off over 24 months - you can't upgrade mid-cycle

you can but not through apple - if you choose to sign with your cell company rather than apple. you have to go with whatever your provider does. for instance Verizon:

With Verizon's iPhone Annual Upgrade program, you may upgrade from an eligible iPhone as soon as 30 days after enrolling in the Verizon Device Payment program and after you have paid off at least 50% of the retail price of your iPhone. You must return your eligible iPhone in good working condition as determined by Verizon. Learn more at verizonwireless.com/support/how-to-identify-device-damage. Upgrade fee applies.

So...what are my options going forward if I want a small phone? The iPhone 8 has been my first iPhone after switching from Android and I love it. The size is perfect for me. In the past I had a Nexus 6 and it felt comically large to me and was extremely impractical. The fact that 6 inches is now the low end of screen size for Apple just seems like a lot. I already own laptops and tablets, I just want something phone sized!

I don't need to upgrade just yet, and I don't want to go back to Android but I'm not willing to go back to a giant phone. Really looking for something 5 inches or less. Has Apple just abandoned this size or could it come back?

XS is 5mm taller and 3.5mm wider than the 8, so should still be good for you.

XR is a bit bigger - 12.5mm taller and 8.5mm wider so might feel a bit big. Basically half way in size between an 8 and an 8+

I care about GarageBand performance on my iPad, but even my iPad has the same A9 my phone does and I've never had issues even with large projects. Likewise, since the move to 2GB of RAM, I've had pretty much no issues with Safari tabs or apps getting ejected from memory when I'm still using them. Touch ID and Face ID each have their pros and cons - I consider it a sidegrade.

Like, there are certainly a few upgrades in the XS, but I just can't say they're worth dropping a grand on to me personally. I mostly use my iPhone for Safari, texting, Twitter, email, the camera, and music, and the only place the XS provides a meaningfully better experience than the 6S is the camera. A few years ago, having a three year old phone usually meant even basic stuff had become slow as hell by now. The 6S is as old now as the iPhone 4 was when it got iOS 7, which ran like total shit.

On audio apps I meant stuff like synths -- I use the Moog Model 15 synth and it requires significant CPU power, and when I start chaining Audio Units with Audiobus it really needs that X power. Of course most people aren't running stuff like that, but for me it's enabled workflows I just wouldn't be able to do with a slower iPhone. For the kind of apps most people are using, a a non-X is still fine as long as the OS stays responsive.

It seems they've abandoned reasonable-sized phones for now. I have the X and it's not usable one-handed without contorting your fingers, whereas the 6/7/8 size was at least somewhat usable one-handed.

Well, given that you don't need to upgrade any time soon you can wait and see.

Given how well the SE did I feel like it's inevitable we'll get something in the same mold (probably still larger than the 4" screen though) but they aren't going to release it the same time as the larger, more expensive and more money-making phones.

So irritating. I'd buy go for a $50 upgrade to 128gb on the XS in a second, but $150 for the next largest 256gb is both too much storage, and more money than I'm willing to spend.
This is me.

I'm at about 87GB on my 6s so definitely need more than 64GB. I can get the 128GB Xr for £800 (and get a Series 4 I've been waiting for for months) for the cost it would take to get a 256GB Xs.

I'm seriously considering going down this route.

I'm flipflopping on which iPhone model I want from minute to minute, haha.

XR positives: best battery, colors, screen size, 128gb storage, price. Negative: resolution (big one for me), no real HDR (i assume it'll be kinda supported like the 8's).
XS positives: smaller (which I think I'd like), High def OLED HDR display, dual cameras. Negatives: price is high (especially for any more storage), smallest battery.
XS Max positives: biggest one, same +'s as the XS, bigger battery than XS. Negatives: less battery than the XR, might be a little TOO big, even pricier than the XS.

I think I've decided to just go for one of the XS's, trying it out for a few days, and if I don't like the battery life on the XS or the Max is too big or the storage isn't enough or they don't seem worth the money, I'll just return it and wait for the XR.

But we'll see if I change my mind in the next 9 hours, haha.

Does it really? The app came out a year before the X and supports all the way back to the 5S. From my experience with iPad synths it's hard to believe it wouldn't run just fine on an A9.

It runs on my 1st gen Air, but it's not as peppy. Where the X is really necessary is when Audiobus comes into play, which can run a chain of audio effects plugins that affect a host synth like the Model 15 in real time. I mean it's no Logic Pro yet, but at this rate, someday...

I have an iPhone 6S running 9.3... yeah I've been avoiding updates.

Should I update it, I know it could make performance/battery worse, or am I better off just avoiding updates? Also am I still eligible for a cheap battery replace in the UK?

I really want to get the stainless steel series 4 watch, but the rational part of my mind is telling me to save $200 and get the aluminum version instead. Decisions, decisions.

Yeah I was deciding about stainless steel or not, but I really like the look of it with a nice band. Seems more resistance to knocks too

Stainless steel looks lovely, but hearing people say that it really dampens the haptic feedback will forever prevent me from choosing it.

My Mac Mini is hanging on by a thread now. It takes minutes just to SSH into it now and I don't know why.

those new ones are the most underwhelming iPhone in history, it's incredible that they don't have a single standout feature... i guess smartphones really hit a plateau when even the trendsetter have nothing new to show.

I wonder what the chances are we'll get an iPhone XR that's the same size or maybe even slightly smaller than the X/XS some day. The OLED phones are simply too expensive, and the current XR is just too big for me. Hell, even the regular X is maybe a tiny bit too big for me, though I haven't used one extensively so I couldn't really say.

If the XR was smaller, I'd probably get it right away.

Serious slowdowns that don't go away with a clean install of the OS are almost always hard drive problems.

Slow SSH connections can be caused by something on your network not supporting IPv6.

If your client is also a Mac you can try adding AddressFamily inet to your ~/.ssh/config and it may help if that's the problem. The default is any which includes inet6.

I think the drive, or the machine itself, is just dying. It's been on constantly for almost a decade, has a crappy 5400rpm drive in it, and just keeps limping along. I just want them to refresh them finally.

Curious to see what used X prices will be like in Japan once the new models are out. Currently like 90,000円.

Also I wonder if places will adjust used price according to battery health now since it's trivial to check. Prices now are based almost entirely on outward appearance.

Wait to my iPhone order says I'm required to give at&t my old iPhone even though I bought it two years ago.

One or two payments left.

Can I just pay at&t the rest of the payments instead?

I have a 5S. I don't avoid updates so I can't compare directly between 9.3 and 12, but the phone feels much snappier than it did on 11.4.

My nephew recently had the iPhone 6 battery replaced, and he was grumpy because it cost much more than a 6S battery, so I reckon you can still get a cheap replacement.

Can someone point me to the needed Power Plug for fast charging of a iPhone 8?
Apple 12W USB Adapter - it's the iPad charger and it charges the iPhone pretty fast! And you can use it with the cable you already own.

For even faster charging, but much pricier too:

Apple 30W USB-C Power Adapter and you'll also need a USB-C to Lightning Cable, at the moment only available from Apple.

Do Apple preorders ever ship faster than their estimates?

I ordered an XS Max, but it says it won't get to me until Oct. 5-12, was hoping to get it earlier, but if that is set in stone it should at least get to me before my birthday, so that's something.

They do. I've gotten stuff earlier than the estimate almost every time they've done preorders.

Generally it's just a couple of days, though.

Last year my the iPhone X I ordered like two minutes after the preorders went up was originally estimated to ship like two weeks after the phone was to hit stores. Like two days after placing that order it got bumped up to delivering early on launch day.

Once you go stainless steel it's impossible to go back

Went from series 0 SS to grey aluminium and I'm happy. SE is gorgeous but locked me in due to price. With aluminium I don't mind upgrading more often. Just preordered a series 4 LTE

Kinda getting early buyers remorse though - price is ok but I'm never without my phone so do I need the extra £100 it costs?

Only if you run or do other potentially phone-free activities. Could be a nice excuse to start :D
