They weren't going to jump from less than QHD on the X to 4K on the XS Max.
Are yes. The bad apple CPU's in the phones. Everyone knows they are really not top of the line.

Well. The XS Max is only $100 more to start than the XS. That's better than I was expecting. And I assume each storage tier is just $100 more each as usual.

You are better off adding some money and buying a macbook.
I mean sure it's technically smaller than a plus, but not by much.
I don't use my phone to watch movies, television, or even youtube very often.
It's a phone, messaging device, internet device, and occasional camera. The iPhone SE is perfect for my needs. Small, unassuming, out of the way. Does its job and then tucks away into my pocket. Anything bigger is absurd and unnecessary.
This is my exact use case as well. I text, I browse, and very occasionally use the camera. I can't do those things efficiently on a SE size screen. Typing is too difficult.
