Destiny's DLC costs almost as much as a brand new AAA game, so yeah, it makes sense to make the base game free.

I've seen ads on Twitch and YouTube for Forsaken, they are trying to get the numbers in. Being on PS+ now, i've seen a number of new players (or people trying a new character out, i don't really know). If it works, it works.

Bungie always try and be the stand-out at EGX, every time i've been, i've seen a pretty hefty sized area dedicated to Destiny. Last year was no exception, and as people seem to love them free energy drinks the event give out, they put them at the Destiny booth.

Yes, I remember getting a mandatory game icon to launch on my PS4 home menu and I hadn't even downloaded a demo or signed up for a beta or anything. It was just a link to the game's purchase page. Activision has been betting a lot on it and we all know D1's "500-million budget" had like a 20/80 ratio between game development and marketing costs.

I must admit the marketing and hype has an effect on me. So I am almost ready to jump back in.

I just never manage to to integrate well enough to have a sufficient pool of friends to play it with. Might just be me being hesitant of joining voice chat with strangers after some unpleasant experiences.

Anyway their marketing works since I am actually thinking about buying this expansion.

What I don't get is that some people are like "yeah, they'll have D2 for cheap but then they'll HAVE to upgrade." I've ran into my fair share of level 20 caps, myself included.

I got D2 in the Humble Bundle and got a decent 30 hours from it, and have since put it down. It's not like the game literally forces you to get the expansions, and the amount of content in vanilla D2 is still going to give you a decent main campaign with side activities and multiplayer. I might pick up Forsaken sometime down the road, but this idea that D2 requires you to upgrade just isn't true.

7 pages ?

It's really strange seeing D2 enthusiasts here. I mean, if you just want to have fun and not look at the shady practices, go play the game (or stay on the enthusiats forums).

It's impossible to call out Bungie or Activision without being dismissed by some people incapable of reading a criticism addressed to some company they don't even belong.

If the game is this fun, why are you wasting time defending Bungie ? Why do you feel offended when someone is not loving it ?

Well, you do need to have the base game to play the expansion. So it makes sense to put it in every possible players hands. They should have just made it free to play on all platforms(which is kind of what they are doing). I got the game when it was 7.99 and got the dlc when it was on sale. I haven't finished them to be honest and am not even worried about the expansion. Too many games this fall. :(

Time and time again, Desinty players have proved that Bungie can do whatever it wants and get away with it.

Doesn't matter how many times they screw up, lie.. Or how many times the community gets "outraged".. Bungie will put on the "sorry" face, say they'll do better, and come next game/expansion, all those players who were made a Bungie, promising to never buy a Destiny game again, will be lining up at midnight.

So, yeah.. Bungie and Activision how what they're doing. They agressively market for new players, while already having old players on a stranglehold, always coming back to give them more money.

I want to do a little comparison...

Destiny 2 to users FREE

+ FREE Destiny 2 Base
+ $30 Year 1 Pass
+ $40 Forsaken
+ $30 Year 2 Pass (Optional)

$70 (or $100 with Year 2 Pass)

Destiny 2 without FREE

+ $60 Destiny 2 Base (or the price you can buy it cheaper)
+ $30 Year 1 Pass
+ $40 Forsaken
+ $30 Year 2 Pass (Optional)

At least $100 (or $130 with Year 2 Pass)

Just here you can see why they can give it Free.

BTW there is another option.

Destiny 2 Forsaken Legendary Retail

+ $60 Destiny 2 Base + Year 1 Pass + Forsaken
+ $30 Year 2 Pass (Optional)

That is the cheapest way... even compared with the FREE base option.

Destiny 2 free:
Free. Because you aren't required to buy any additional content.

Why don't yall post this disengenuous shit in the Rainbow Six Siege threads about additonal content costing money?
Or well literally any other GaaS game.

Remember when they forcefully added to everyone's PS4 menu bar last December? Also for the PS+ version there's no "add to library" only "Download".

They're desperate and it shows.
Man!

Coca-Cola is the most aggressively marketed soft drink i've ever seen. They are everywhere, Football world cup, ice hockey, NASCAR, my TV, in my video games and youtube

It's a great idea imo. Keeps their game relevant a year after release and teases new players before the big expansion drop.

I mean, the reason people are so amped about Forsaken is because it - and the 2.0 update received - are all on point to address the majority of the community concerns. Not really sure how making sweeping changes and reversals on their decisions as a means to address the concerns and criticisms gained is "Bungie doing whatever they want and getting away with it". Surely that would be them having doubled down and decided to stay the course, and people then proceeding to jump on Forsaken.

Instead of them actually responding to feedback and making fundamental changes, and people then buying into what's set to be an incredibly enjoyable product in a franchise they enjoy. Which is what's happened.

Well you give the Base game for FREE to make you buy the expansions.

I'm just why they are giving the Base game for FREE (they did the same with Destiny perfected) and showing that maybe there is better options to get everything without get the FREE base game.

Reading your post history, you seem to be a huge Destiny fan. So, you should know everything Bungie did, good and bad.

After putting it all on balance, I decided that the bad was heavier than the good, and decided that I do not want to keep funding that. You, obviously, thought otherwise.

I'm happy with my decision, and respect yours. You should do the same. Being sarcastic about someone else's opinion takes the discussion nowhere.

It's just a case of like "okay, I get it, can this thing stopped shoved in my face everywhere I look?"

Have literally only seen Destiny 'marketing' as recent youtube ads. If having it on sale or as a free add-in somewhere else is considered 'shoved in your face' then I don't know how you step foot into public without being triggered by every billboard in sight.

The massive amount of hyperbole from the Destiny haters is what makes everyone just roll there eyes so damn hard. I don't give two shits if you dislike Destiny, but the amount of effort people put into letting others know how much they dislike it ridiculous.

Of couse. I completely understand all that.

But, for me, the problem is that, I've already lived trhough this story. The EXACT same cycle happened 3 years ago.

1) Bungie messes up the Initial release (Destiny)
1.5) Community is pissed.
2) Bungie's first stance is stand-offish.
3) Bungie releases underwhelming DLCs
4.5) Community is even more pissed
5) Bungie goes to E3 and announces big Expansion, correcting all past mistakes.
5.5) People are happy
6) Expansion lives up to the promise, and makes the game great.

Like many others, I was OK with it when it happened 3 years ago.

HOWEVER, as I've said, we're living the EXACT same story. Bungie once again messed up , even more than the first time, and once again is coming out with a PAID expansion (I know patch 2.0 is not paid, but we all know that Destiny without the Expansions is a shallow experience) which should fix it all.

So, going forward, what's going to happen? Is Bungie gonna repeat the same cycle for a third time with Destiny 3? Will they learn their lesson? Who knows. What I do know, is that I'm no longer interested in funding their blunders and what, for me, is blatant disrespect for my money and time. I completely respect that others have different opinions, and that they'll be having fun today with the expansion.. After all, everyone knows how to best live and enjoy their lives.

I have no idea, honestly. What I do know is that I've got more than my moneys worth despite the blunders and for me, Forsaken looks set to be the best the franchise has been to date. I'm not concerned about much other than a good time when buying games, at least on the level we're talking, so it's a no-brainer for me. Glad you can at least respect that, and as a result I can more than appreciate if it's much the same or too deja vu for you to buy into a second time.

Yeah, I noticed it too. Good. Thats how it should be for these GaaS games. It's actually kinda brilliant if you think about it.

If you get Destiny for free, you still have to pay $60 to get the latest DLC and all other DLC required to play the latest DLC. So you end up paying full price anyway. Activision gets that cash regardless AND they have millions of new users who will try the game for free and undoubtedly get hooked because regardless of its faults, Destiny 2 was a great shooter. Definitely above average, and gunplay that is better than 99% of the shooters out there. It's brilliant out of the box thinking that publishers dont normally do.

I didn't read your post history, I don't feel that is necessary.

and you are right, I am a fan of the game, I have seen this game through good and bad, I will call out the fuckery and praise the positive.

You've weighed the scale and made your decision, that's fine, I respect that.

I see the cycle of Bungie's stumbles and retribution as an interconnected part of trying to please a community that really deep down doesn't know what it wants. Don't get me wrong, Bungie have made some baffling decisions and down-right idiotic ones too. But each time, they knuckled down and produced the goods. They've shown they can make this thing work as many times as they've stumbled and so long as they prove themselves, they will earn their chances with me.

My sarcasm, the culmunative exaspiration of five years of shit-posting, trolling, misinformed posting and arguments in bad faith. Most people who burst into Destiny threads hardly ever say anything new or offer a fresh take - mostly just recycle whatever they've seen in a past thread or whatever some youtuber said.

My dude, come on. With all due respect (and seriously I'm really not trying to talk shit or be condescending here), just why? You clearly don't like the game. That's fine. There are plenty of games I don't like either, but I don't invest nearly that much time and energy expressing my "criticism" towards them. It's just not worth it.

It is only a way to make people buy the Forsaken... even with the FREE base game you will spent close to same to buy Forsaken if you really want to get into Destiny 2.
It is like they are only giving you a taste of Destiny 2 with the free offer... a demo, trial, etc.

Trim my man, all the criticism you point has been valid before, much of it is outdated. You have a bone to pick with the game, and it shows in every post you do.

Id be insulted if you weren't some random stranger on the internet that has no idea what the hell they're talking about.
You really thinking Bungie sit down at the morning meetings and say
"okay lets make the game really shit to start with, then make it good? ok sounds great!"
They make good and bad choices like any other dev. Their biggest flaw is not listening to their community but you are being ridiculous if you really believe their business tactics are so malicious.
